Ordered the sd pix240 from b&h

Question-
If I switched mid shoot from avchd, to the uncompressed footage on the 220, will there be a marked difference in quality?

Also, does it come with the ss drive? and how much does it cost if it doesn't...

I guess what I'm asking, is what will the total cost be, including storage on one of these things?

Are you just looking for an external recorder? I guess I'm asking why you want one?

The price doesn't include storage. You can use whatever you want for storage. The PIX recorders (at least the 240) can use external eSATA drives, or onboard SSDs, or CompactFlash cards.

I don't see how the pix240 changes that.

Nah, i meant, that now the sound guy is riding the levels.
With that recorder it would be stupid to have a sound guy with a field mixer/recorder, when I already have a first class audio recorder/mixer on the camera.
But then I have to watch the levels instead.

But now, while typing this, I can see how silly that is what I´m saying- ah forget it and ignore me - it was a long day.

Both PIX240/220 recorders have a built-in CF slot on top. Optionally, both can be equipped with an SSD caddy, which also adds USB 3.0, FireWire 800, an eSATAp (powered) for footage uploads. Interestingly, eSATAp can also be used to power and record to an external storage device, but only by the PIX240 it seems from the current data sheet. Probably an artificial limitation to differentiate the models. Found a short Sound Devices PIX interview at NAB 2011.

It would be great if the next PIX model made use of a high quality LCD with features suitable as a field monitor in addition to video/audio recording functions. Such an integrated device could sell like hotcakes. The PIX already has an LCD, now just to improve a little. Korean BON already goes this direction with its BON D7 and D17 Field Monitor.

Looks like the ship date has been pushed back until SEPTEMBER (according to Sound Devices).

I cancelled my order from B&H and got a Blackmagic hyperDeck Shuttle in the interim.

I was wondering how this was going to play out. The delay is a little annoying, but I know that SD was listening to our suggestions, so maybe they're revising it a bit in an attempt to totally hit it out of the park?

What were some of those suggestions?

The usual litany of suggestions for a monitor -- 1:1 pixel display for focus assist, wave/vector for monitoring. Trying to get it all accomplished in one device to make it irresistible...

Plus, I really want them to implement some sort of AVI recording or MXF recording instead of just Quicktime MOV recording... and with Apple punting FCP X down the block, maybe they're re-evaluating their MOV-only approach. Of all the things I'd read and heard about the PIX, that was the one minor annoyance that bothered me -- that its only recording format was Quicktime. If they made it MXF or AVI as well... that would be a whole lot of icing on that cake...

EDIT - of course, I have no idea if they're actually going to implement any of those suggestions! Just that when I and others made them, they seemed very interested in knowing what we wanted, so ... we'll see what actually arrives; I just have a little more optimism now that maybe it'll have maybe one or more of the suggested options!
