Ordered the sd pix240 from b&h

Cool. I wasn't expecting them to ship so soon. Well, then again we'll see when it actually ships. Exciting times!

From what I've seen, if I had to nut up for an external recorder right now, the Sound Devices would get my nod. I was really impressed with what I saw at NAB.

I agree. The PIX240 seems like the way to go. Sure makes the Nano look over priced that's for sure.

I had a concern with my SD552 that turned out to be an issue that was resolved with a firmware update. In an email I asked Nic (their service rep) about the shipping date for the PIX240 and this is what he said:

"Our goal for shipping the PIX is June or July."

Sure hope that means two weeks vs. four.

:)

In theory, SSD makes sense, but Atomos has tested them and found (except for Intel SSD) that most of them drop the write speed over extended use. Hence they recommend HD for now. Does Sound Devices have a list of approved drives yet?

Does it support 24psf? (and out of curiosity, does the samuari do 24psf? I have kinda lost track of that...)

Although a known fact, however, this deteriorating speed issue has been addressed with the TRIM feature in most (if not all) SSDs circa late 2009 onwards. As long as you connect an SSD featuring TRIM to a TRIM-capable operating system (e.g., Windows 7, Mac OSX 10.6.6, FreeBSD 8.2, Linux 2.6.33), the TRIM commands perform their garbage collection magic automatically. Even for legacy OS without the native TRIM support, decent SSDs feature a maintenance utility that performs manual TRIM operation. For example, Intel has such utility called the Intel SSD Toolbox since late 2009.

Therefore, we can safely use modern SSDs (with TRIM) without the fear of deteriorating performance. Vendors offering their "expert" opinions about technologies they do not fully understand shall seek updates every once in a while.

i wish that version had more than just hdmi... I like the price tag, but i don't trust it.

Ha- what don't you trust. Sound Devices makes the dopest sound gear there is. That they're getting into the video recorder game is good news indeed.
