or Sony RX10: What we've been looking for from Panasonic?

Azonicbruce: Ah, if it were only that simple. The RX10 and the Rx100 use a proprietary little plug, called the Multi-terminal, that shares the shape, but not the contact points, of a micro-USB plug. As of now, there is only one remote Sony makes for that plug, the RM-VPR1, and it's only good to zoom the lens, trip the shutter, and start and stop the movie. No intervalometer functions (for time-lapse) whatsoever.

And since these R series cameras don't share an infra red release port like the NEX 5,6,7, you can't use any third party intervalometer like the P-Clix either. I've posted all over the Sony support forums asking for something like this. BTW, the Playmemories Time-lapse App for the NEX 6 is largely junk, very difficult to program, features all these "modes" i.e., sunset, sunrise, nightime, that essentially do the same thing, which is lock in the first exposure you take and never change it again. Not designed by people who actually shoot time lapses!

I'd love to know if anyone has come up with a good timelapse solution for the RX10.

Btw, I'm loving the RX10 thus far and must say this thread has been tremendously helpful in overcoming the camera's learning curve. Big thanks from this noob.

I use a simple procedure for daylight time-lapse:

Shoot 24p for approximately 4 continuous minutes.

Retime in FCP X "Fast x20".

This provides an approximate 10 sec clip.

Good luck.

Great job as always Dan.

Just curious about your choice of outdoor WB for the exterior lights. These lights are always a chalkenge to capture in terms of their hue and saturation. Did you find that the outdoor WB together with the Vivid mode got you closer to the true colors?

Thanks for watching and commenting Ken. Always good to hear from you.

The RX10 "Auto WB" does a great job, however, I wanted something a bit warmer. WB = Sun interiors and exterior night is something I've used for years to add a touch of warmth.

Had unpredictable light flicker at any shutter speed in 24p. At 60p, no issue at 60 or 125 shutter.

Anyone experience the dreaded overheat and shut down on this camera like some others out there (whats' the max shooting length anyways, the usual 30 mins I assume?!).

Thanks for that info. I was assuming since on the gh2 it worked through the headphone jack it would work the same on the rx10. I'm really bummed about this as I do quite a bit of time lapse and stop-motion work.

if you're on the fence about an RX10, it's $937 at adorama for god knows how long. it says open box, but i just got it and it's retail, invoice even shows retail new SKU.

Well, I just recieved my "open box" RX10 from Adorama today. If the box had ever been opened, I could not tell. It seems indistinguishable from new.

Looking forward to playing around with this new toy.

any of you guys compared Rx10 with the Sony A7 kit ? I know A7 has more moire and less sharp, but how bad is it in real life?

Thanks Dan. Regarding the flicker, I've never been a big fan of slower frame rates anyway, as it's always dicey how they capture motion within a scene. I'm much more comfortable with 60p.

The one thing I'm seeing here in this thread and sample videos is the Len's Man it is sharp! I'm really impressed with it. If it does not overheat before 29 minutes I will get one, but until I read some info and testing to that, I'll wait. This seems like a phenomenal camera!

Also, If anyone is looking for a Timelapse feature for the RX10 this company is coming out with one very shortly, I have one and use my Samsung Note II to control my GH3, it works awesome! You can download the app at play store from your android smartphone, it's free, then you can look at the features and see all what it can do.

that would be fantastic, where have you see indications that they will be supporting the RX10?

Joining the RX10 party:

Something I noticed once I got the footage on my computer is that nearly all of the shots have a lot of jitter to them. I shot mostly handheld while resting against rails and walls to stabilize while Standard Steadyshot was on (Active Steadyshot was off). I'm used to my HMC40 which gives very stable footage under such conditions. I guess the RX10 is telling me that it's time to kick my caffene addiction. :2vrolijk_08: So far, I get the feeling that it does better with Steadyshot disabled entirely, but I'll need to play around with it more. Edit: After playing with it more, the jitteryness is not appearing in anything else. Must be user error here.

This camera definitely has more detail and DR than the HMC40, though. It trounces the '40 in low light as well...but then, so does every other camera.

Like I said earlier, that lens is really sharp, the detail is pretty amazing for the price point, I think it's better than my GH3 and my 12-35mm f2.8 Panny. Due to the weak bit rate though you wont have a lot of latitude like the 50-70 mbps of the GH3. But that's OK, if I know that, then I just have to make sure it gets the right exposure and settings. Once I know that it does not overheat, I'll get one.

Im using my RX10 for weddings as my main cam for doc. I can confirm that it does not overheat
