or Sony RX10: What we've been looking for from Panasonic?

it seems a battery grip which holds 3 of the batteries would be ripe for the making. i did once spot a generic battery grip....

Hey Darren, if you find the link to the battery grip, could you post it. I'm curious to see what it looks like and pricing (don't care if its an aftermarket grip).

A camera like this would be a great B cam!

if you're on the fence about an RX10, it's $937 at adorama for god knows how long. it says open box, but i just got it and it's retail, invoice even shows retail new SKU.

Ok, I'm sold. Thanks' for pointing this out.

Incidentally, I wonder if you actually got a brand new unit, or if it was just repackaged and re-shrinkwraped very carefully. Is it a US region SKU? I guess it doesn't matter that much, as long as everything is included and in working order.

Another Test Clip

Did a quick test with the RX10 - Christmas tree is the subject (it's patient and complains very little). Auto ISO with very little extra lighting resulted in mostly 1600 and 3200 and f/2.8. You can clearly see the noise in some shots, but I am very pleasantly surprised. This is really going to be a fun little camera. The available download is a high bit rate if you want to pixel peep.

Im seriously considering buying this intriguing offering from Sony. Never thought I would say that! For those that have this camera and have had some time with it I have a couple questions for you, mainly pertaining to the lens...

1) How is the lens handling distortion on the wide end (24mm-35mm range)? Pretty decent?
2) How is the sharpness on the lens through-out the range? Especially the long end at 150-200mm?
3) How is the AF of the lens and camera in shooting stills? Pretty consistent in locking on targets (how about low light AF)?
4) And this one might sound silly but when shooting video in manual are there any restrictions on controls? (like Nikon DSLR's not allowing control of aperture while shooting in live view!).

If you can't tell I plan on fully using the stills side of this camera as much as the video so Im interested in the lens capabilities from a stills stand point as much as I am interested in the video side of this camera. Great thread btw and thanks to all the contributors, read all 35 pages to date!

Thanks for the Christmas display Rich! Here's hoping the RX10 is just what you're looking for.

Jay,

Good news: the RX10 is a powerful package, and the lens is the strongest feature.

1. None that I've seen. Lens hood will vignette photos at full wide, but not video.
2. Better than expected. Try 400mm Clear Image Zoom. Surprisingly good.
3. Very good, and very good.
4. Manual click-less (switchable) aperture ring.

Good luck with your decision.

^^^ Thanks for the reply, Dan. :) Thats exactly what I wanted to hear about the lens. I read the thread quickly so I might have missed this if it was mentioned but how is the dynamic range on the camera? Anyone guesstimate how many stops were getting on this camera?

Also, I know the camera is quite new but has anyone heard any chatter on Sony possibly updating the video codec for this camera? It would have been nice to have a better codec. At-least there is the clean hdmi out as an alternative. All in all Im having a hard time seeing why not to buy this camera! Aliasing and moire seem to be much better in control compared to the crap Canon's are putting out aside from a few models (one of Canon HDSLR's biggest flaw's IMO). Can you imagine how much CaNikon would want for a 24-200mm F/2.8 lens, lol. This camera package seems really solid for the money. In my dreams I envision RX-10 + APS-C sensor = W0W!!!

Oh and almost forgot to ask, anyone experience the dreaded overheat and shut down on this camera like some others out there (whats' the max shooting length anyways, the usual 30 mins I assume?!).

Great job as always Dan.

Just curious about your choice of outdoor WB for the exterior lights. These lights are always a chalkenge to capture in terms of their hue and saturation. Did you find that the outdoor WB together with the Vivid mode got you closer to the true colors?

I'd love to know if anyone has come up with a good timelapse solution for the RX10.

Btw, I'm loving the RX10 thus far and must say this thread has been tremendously helpful in overcoming the camera's learning curve. Big thanks from this noob.

I think the RX10 suffers from the same time lapse limitations as the RX100. All of the RX100 solutions rely on the buffer write speed and just clamp down the shutter. There are some video on YouTube with instructions. I keep hoping for an enhanced PlayMemories Mobile with time lapse.
