or Sony RX10: What we've been looking for from Panasonic?

I use FCPX.

I haven't used it, I don't know if it needs the 16-235 treatment.
From the footage you posted, my guess is that it does, and that 6 is RX10 instead of C100 (highlights are awful, as they would be with my NEX in Premiere without the 16-235 thing)

BTW, with my NEX, the codec does fall apart pretty badly if you move the camera like a maniac, but it doesn't with regular stuff. This is the furthest I've pushed a grade with the NEX, and I think it held up very well.

mmm... that could be it, yes
The practicals show more DR in the highlights in 6 (wider area with detail), but with a harsher rolloff (it goes from electronic white to not-really-light orange very fast), it may be the sun and the picture profile

Given the C100 has more headroom in the highlights than the 5D3+RAW, which has one stop better DR than the 5D3+H.264, it's a feat that your test would be such a close call. Impressive.

I agree with Sam. The thing seems to be handling highlights VERY well.

Please do post some thoughts re RX10 and Ninja, and poss some A-B (if you have time/inclination) in the coming days.

Have to say, I'm just about sold.

What about stills, btw? What's the raw format?

wont anyone join me in urging blackmagic to make a smaller hyperdeck shuttle that takes SD/CF cards? or perhaps atomos to do something of that likes. cameras like the rx10 can do just fine without an external monitor, and i cant imagine i'm alone in the desire to have an external recording solution that truly doesn't alter the form factor of the camera.

I was thinking about that last night, Darren. A prores recorder to fast Cf with no bells and whistles. Powered by a 5d battery with only hdmi in.

i know, right?

what's left inside a hyperdeck shuttle after you rip out the battery and ssd caddy? or if you chuck the ssd caddy and monitor on the ninja? and yea, have just hdmi in. though i guess since the shuttle already has it, might as well leave sdi in as well. but yea, it seems plenty reasonable for a very small, simple recorder to exist. and if prores is that much of a headache to license/raises costs, just do dnxhd

I too have been thinking about a Ninja 3 or the like with slot for very fast CF cards and a very small (like ipod mini sized) monitor that just lets you do set up and shows a big, red dot when recording. I never use the Ninja 2 for monitoring.

Have to imagine they're working on something like this.

Looks great Dan. What a place to test cameras. Does management say, "Here comes Dan with anooooother camera". Love to hear some of your thoughts on the camera and how you feel about it.

Some additional thoughts from your video. I see you are taking advantage of the in camera bubble level. It's nice having that feature. There are some really impressive shots in your video. What profiles and settings did you use?

You're basically asking for an HDMI EVF (or 3" screen plus loupe) that can record ProRes to CF cards. I think it makes a lot of sense.
With all BM already has, the only technical challenge I see here for them is adding the CF controller. Make it CFast and they probably wouldn't break a sweat.

How right you are. I've learned to look like a tourist so not to get tossed out. No tripod inside helps too.

I'm still rather unfamiliar with the RX10, so don't have an accurate list of pros and cons yet. I can say, having used DSLRs for so long, I almost forgot how and where to use zebras, built-in ND & zoom.

The RX10 image, to me, is near identical to the GH3 relative to color, but the GH3 is sharper. My usual GH3 settings are default Vivid, -1/3 Exposure for exteriors and default Standard for interiors. Currently, I've set the RX10 to Vivid, +2 Sharpness, -1/3 Exposure for exteriors, and Standard +2 Sharpness for interiors. RX10 WB may best the GH3. The Biltmore interior has tricky lighting, but AWB handled it nicely.

Level gauge is great but sometimes tough to see. Also use a flat hot-shoe bubble.

Have a most excellent Thanksgiving.

Ok two tests here. All footage is ungraded. This is the RX10 on the Defy G5. There are two shots flying the C100 as well. The RX10 was set to continuous AF the whole time. Never touched or treated focus at once while on the G5.

Nevermind the glitch in one of the shots. It's not in the original video. I think vimeo did that

Nice, I downloaded the original and I can't say for sure which are the C100 shots.

My problem as I learn about the cam, as that nearly everything we shoot is 30p these days, and so for the internal codec, I'd literally be throwing away every other frame from the 60p mode. There don't seem to be a 30p mode. That said, the difference on the G6 between the 60p and 30p is minimal, so maybe it's not a deal breaker.

Dusty, have you put it on the Ninja yet?

Yes, I have tested it with the ninja. Nothing to share yet online but I can say it looks REAL good. Also, I tested running HDMI out to ninja on the MP4 setting to get a 30p framerate. Seems to work just fine.
In the Vid the C100 is shot 2 and 4.

I'm starting to use the Deep profile as I see better into the low mid tones. More playing and discovery. But I am amazed by this camera.
