Opinions T2i vs GH1?

Emanuel may I ask what are your likes and dislikes of the images produced by the two cameras?
As said on the other thread, I like both.

The strengths of each are the sharper GH1 outcome @ wide end, stronger codec and bigger sensor size (S35 shallow DOF + faster use of the glass and better low light performance) for the Canon.

In a strictly personal POV -- not only mine but to anyone 'cause it is perhaps a fact :-) straight out of the box, the Panny is as cinematic as the Panasonic 24p feel gets from DVX day one, the Canon more on the HD Cinealta color edge or Canon's high saturation aka plastic look ;-) as you wish.

'cause of the codec, GH1 is less suitable for motion vs. Canon. I wouldn't trust in one or the other for lots of motion in front of them, though.

Without mention, one is half price of the other. IMHO, the shooting range of Canon is wider but surely not for non-event shooters.

Hope this sum-up of a quick sum-up comparison helps,
E. :-)

I'd rather use the Canon with anamorphic glass. The softness introduced by these lenses can grant a better mix instead.

I find the Canons too soft and moiré filled for deep depth of field shots in interiors. GH1 is sharper and doesn't exhibit quite so much moiré. I am currently shooting a mixture of 5D and Gh1 for a feature film, and we did a whole set of interior scenes on 5D (because we had access to two of them and it made the shooting go faster) but are now having to deal with rotoscoping people and painting out the moiré in many of the shots in after effects, and I am really not happy with how soft everything is. Today we had a classroom shoot that was on the GH1, and, just to take a look, I took the 5D out of the bag and filmed a few things....moiré city on the walls and chairs. The Gh1? Clean, sharp, and pattern free.

I find the gh1 has better highlight rolloff but thats just me

btw - none of these cmos digital cameras is moire free, not even the red one. (link)

I used to own a GH1 and sold it. There definitely are great examples of GH1 delivering an awesome image, but there's no denying that the camera has banding issues. I tried to ignore it and just accept that in some situations it was going to happen, but eventually I just decided I was making the sacrifice too often.

Overall the image quality was more pixelated and smudgy and less clean than the 7D...

The swivel LSD is good stuff. As is the ability to shoot non-stop till your card fills. But honestly, since I've made the switch to the 7D, the 12 min cap hasn't bothered me at all.

I've never had overheating issues and I've filmed all day on several occasions.

If you purchase EF lenses for your Canon and decide to one day upgrade to the Scarlet you will be able to still use those lenses.

As a still camera, Canon is superior. The GH1 takes good pics, but I didn't feel like they compared to the quality of my 7D or even my 20D. Same goes for usability... I personally think the manual controls of Canon are better and more user-friendly than those of the GH1.

Granted, the GH1 is a lot less than a 7D, but it's more expensive than a T2i, so as long as the available ISO settings are good for ya, I would definitely say go for T2i all the way.

the biggest trap is to fall in love with your camera, start defending it, and cling to it like its the best investment

DON't, plain and simple

it depreciates fast and its just a tool

buy, use, flip

Ha...I laugh sometimes at some of the posts that are more obvious than others. People get this crazy "mine is better than yours" attitude as if they are trying to defend their investment.

I have a GH1 and i think work for me really well, but if you are planning use the camera as a B-Cam, go for the t2, better as still camera, great video, Canon AF lens, cheaper.

Just my two cents

Sorry for my bad english

Agreed about highlight roll off. I feel like it has better highlight rolloff than the HVX lol.

Thank you very much for your response Emanuel.

Can I ask what you mean by using anamorphic glass? When I was in my teens I used to make custom mounts for old Moller Anamophic lenses for my DV cams so I could shoot true widescreen and achieve a more cinematic look, are people using these kinds of lenses on DSLRs? if so that would rock as I still have some of my old glass - which I loved the look of :-D

E X A C T L Y.

Use it for what it's good for, and sell it when something better comes along. Don't get caught up in a religious-style fervor over any particular product. Use it for what it does best, and recognize that every product on the market has its own particular shortcomings.

Never have, I've had Canon's, Sony's and Pannasonics, heck my first camera was a JVC A1U DV CAM with no firewire on it. I think people who get into that mantra short themselves severely

I agree. I think the reason why us GH1 people are defensive about our camera is that the Canon people think that any camera that says Canon on it and shoots video somehow instantly inherits all of this goodness from the brilliant people who happen to have shot with these cameras. Your T2i will not turn your films into those of Philip Bloom or Ron Howard or George Lucas just because it says Canon on it any more than a GH1 is going to turn your films into crappy vacation videos just because it says Lumix on it.

I realize that this might sound like more brand bickering, and thats because it is. Because everyone here has had to put up with this crap thread after thread after thread. I know I get accused of being a Panasonic apologist, and all I can say is that I try to keep to the facts when I discuss these cameras, and to clearly differentiate my opinion as opinion. A fact is a fact and your opinion is your opinion, and they're both valid. What isn't valid is saying that a T2i is the best choice because some famous filmmaker used a 5D to shoot some B-Roll (or even a whole episode of a TV show.) What isn't valid is saying that a GH1 is the best choice because all Canon users are just buying into hype (which is not what I am trying to say here and is why I put this example in.)

I resent it when people come along and say things like "the GH1 is obsolete, it's just a tool so let it go and get with the better tools that have come out" not because they are recommending that I switch brands, but because I think that the GH1 is still the best tool and that they are the ones who are recommending based on some weird twisted brand fetishism, not I.

I still feel that the 5D is the best choice of the Canon cameras, and at the time I bought my GH1, the choice was between it and the 5D. I did the research, looked at both, and went with the GH1. So why does it seem like me and people like me are arguing for a brand? Well, it's because we DID do the research, we DID find the best tool, we think it is STILL the best tool, and we don't see that as having changed. When a better tool than the GH1 comes out I will get it, or if my GH1 still works for me I will keep it but acknowledge the better tool for what it is. The thing is though, I don't feel like that's happened yet. I still feel the GH1 is the best tool. And whenever a thread like this comes up, that's the opinion, backed up by points, some factual and some observational, that I will put forth, and I would expect anyone who bought any other camera here that feels the same way to do the same.

Sorry if that was a little convoluted...basically what I am saying is that the stupid Canon users are brand obsessed and that the Panasonic users are gods gift to the universe so screw brand loyalty......wait a second.... :D

My opinion is the T2i is a nicer camera than the GH1.

The colour range and texture is lovely, whereas the GH1 is very clean, contrasty, and sharp. I like organic, grainy, and soft, which is why I held onto my Nikon D90 for so long before selling it.

The highlight roll off and shadows is so much more pleasing on the T2i, whereas the GH1 always appears clipped. Like, very white and sharp, it looks more suited to documentary or news work than narrative.

I don't mind the moire that comes on the T2i, as I shoot soft and purposely add grain and noise and colour correction to minimise it. Another problem with the GH1 is the banding you get in shadows/under exposed areas, it gives the image a very unsightly laser printed paper look.

Also, it's cheaper to have a T2i, and taking into account the stills lenses for it are cheaper and wider with less crop factor. [getting a fast, wide lens for the GH1 can be expensive...]

However- my favourite of the DSLRS, in terms of video, is the Nikon D3S, which I'd book out and rent whenever the time is needed.
