This was my practice film for my thesis. Trying to get some more critiques before I re-edit this.

Shot on 60d

Lens used:
Canon 50mm
Tamron 17-50mm

Pretty intense stuff. You got a good look from your 60D. How do you like that Tamron?

Very sharp at it's wide point. Seems a little contrasty beside my canon glass. Focus ring is reversed, but very smooth for those that don't have the follow focus rig such as myself.

Overall I'd say it's a very nice wide lens for cropped frame. It actually comes out to be more like a 25-80 though. And it doesn't work on full framed.

I don't think i would have bought either of these if i could start over... maybe the 50 just because it's so fast...

But yeah im sure there's lots of things wrong with this film and im not sensitive, so go at it. I won't even defend myself :)

I guess from a technical aspect, I liked most of the shots and the grading. The different aspect ratios was kinda throwing me off and distracting from the content.
I like most of the sound except it may have been a touch too much music wise for me.
The storyline.......well, didn't cut it for me. I understand he's the crazy man, but, crackhead on mushrooms that took 4 hits of acid is what I'll call it.

You got mad cam skills but story tellin ain't your thing.

Sorry if that hurt, but I'm still pissed at David Lynch for the time I rented Eraserhead. (still want my money back for that wasted rental)

Lol, well storytelling can be learned just like anything else. And nothing can hurt my feelings... I plan on shortening this down to a 4 to 5 minute piece. Hopefully I can conjure more from cutting out.

I would cut a large portion of that from the front end. 5 minutes in and it was getting a little repetative. I agree that this would be a better story shortened down.
Again, great camera work. (The actor was good IMO too)

Alright, here are my thoughts (take them with a grain of salt, I by no means think I am anywhere close to an expert):

-I agree with the aspect ratio changes. It was a bit distracting and didn't really have a purpose to the story, IMO.
-The basic camera work and framing and whatnot is great, excellent work.
-the editing work is equally as impressive, though I agree that some parts are a bit long. Not long cuts, just long sections. The REALLY trippy part around 6:00 to 7:40 didn't do much for me, adding to the story. I think that him "searching for the person" (what I think that part is?) doesn't need to be that crazy, as we have already established that he is a bit out of it.
-I REALLY like the switching between him talking to himself, it is very well done.
-I also like the switch to handheld at about 8:02. it fits the story very nicely.
-I am not really sure what happened at 8:34, but the music change is very jarring (I am not sure if it was intentional
-The lack of sound in the part right after is good, I think it adds to the tension, but then it is broken very shortly. I can see it being more powerful if you just continued with the couple of foley effects (the belt snapping a couple of times, etc)
-Yeah, I think I would like to see that creepy music continued through the end with just foley sounds.
-is there a reason that the titles aren't full-screen at the end?

Alright, those are the things I jotted down while I was watching. Here are the overarching thoughts:

I loved the editing, shooting, and acting. All very impressive. The spoke dialogue has some hiss in it, but there really isn't any way to get around that, unfortunately....

The only three things that sorta bothered me were:
1) some of the scenes were a little long (or repetitive of other scenes). I am guessing this will go away completely in the short version.
2) the music changes tone and pace alot and very quickly. This can be used to alter the feelings of the viewer, but I found it to be distracting in a couple of places. Maybe less pieces and run each one longer?
3) the biggest thing to me was the jumps in color correction. Some of them I can see was used as shifts in mood, but there were still some that were off between cuts in scenes. In reality, this isn't a HUGE deal, but with your cinematography being so outstanding I hate to see those jumps in color correction. Also some of the color correction brought out alot of noise in some scenes. This really didn't bother me a ton, just a thought.

Anyway, I hope this helped some, even just to make you think "man, this guy doesn't know what he is talking about!"

I did enjoy it, very nice job.

Nice. Thanks for the feedback. Everyone i've asked seems to be pointing out these same things. Glad you brought up the jarring music switch which, though intentional, just ends up being another distraction. I think.

I saw them screen this at the Manifesto Film Festival. It was by far my most FAVORITE film shown. I think you did an OUTSTANDING job. I'm a 2nd quarter student at the Art Institute of Charlotte I'm in the DFVP(digital film) program and i've been looking for people looking fo people who "dare to be different" with films like these and to me you seriously nailed it. Kudos.
