One Year With The AF100

I too have a love/hate relationship with my AF100 but it's made over $40k for me this year, not bad for a $5k investment. So yes, I love it because its done very well for me business wise but I also have a Scarlet on order because I can't get a consistent image out of it that I like...

Well to be entirely true to fact regarding your (or my) investment...the $5k only purchased a camera body.

On its own...it could not make a dime.

Sorry to bring reality to a love fest.

:love4:

It would be great to see some of your films shot with the AF100 especially the award winning one

I could have spent far more but didn't.

Aside from a couple extra batteries I didn't really purchase anything else as I already has some m43 lenses from my gh1 and rigs and L lenses from my 5D Mark II shooting days :)

Birger still says January.

But there's a new player, MFT has one now, so Redrock and MFT are both providing Canon electronic aperture control, and MFT has image stabilization control too.

Hmmm AF100. FWIW I have a Scarlet on order and also looking at the C300. My reasons may vary to others for doing so though.

Ive shot 3 shorts on the AF100 in 2011, all came up fantastically - last one only completed edit last week. Two of those I was paid to shoot. I shot a documentary - currently still in edit (to complete Feb 2012), again everything came up amazingly.

I shot months and months of commercial work including, and yes these figures are correct - 118 3-5 minute green screen scenarios.

So why would I get scarlet and or a c300? Because I think the hold some promise at a higher end to the AF100 and because the AF100 work I did this year paid for them. Will I sell my AF100? Hell no.

Great post. I wish I had 13K to play with another camera and like you I wouldn’t sell my AF-100 to help pay for it.

I'm only now starting to look to make money with my gear and everything, what do you all do for insurance? I have sagemax insurance for my af100 but have in total around 15k worth of equipment, is there a good standard insurance you guys use and have had a good experience with? I'd happy pay a chunk monthly to ensure if one of my lenses broke or something i could get them replaced or fixed! Thanks

I've been shooting on the AGDVX 100 for 9 years, now. Not exactly hot competition any more. I find that, through use of lighting and angles, I'm able to compensate for the lack of definition and still get good paying gigs. I drew down 10 g's off a guy who didn't even know what "definition was" when I shot a commercial for his dog's shampoo. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

No just kidding about that. I have been shooting with the DVX100 for 9 years, though. It is high time to upgrade. We are purchasing the AF100 and a couple Olympus lenses this month and are super stoked about it. Looking to draw a lot of support from this awesome community.

Will have to post some stuff once it is shot.

Also, Hywel, could you post some of your footage from the AF100, please? I'd really like to see what you are seeing.

Thank you!

a love and hate relationship
That about sums it up. I love the AF-100 for it's features but I've always struggled to get a great image out of it. There's always been something in every scene that seemed off. I'm not the most experienced cinematographer but after shooting with it for a year it still puts out good but not great images. I think the second time around, Panny would hit the nail on the head with a higher priced AF200.

Panasonic will offer a P2 based AF100 with AVC-Intra this year, the question is will it have an S35 sensor, will it have 10-bit architecture and a more powerful DSP? If not, I don't see the point of spending the extra money. Highlight handling with more latitude. less noise, is essential, or a superior codec is wasted. If Panasonic can do this for under $10K, they will have a winner. If it's just an AF100 with P2 cards, better codec, why bother?

Can you give us some examples of what you mean, please?

Thank you.

I would be surprised if Panasonic walked away from MFT, but I could see an advance on the codec. They sit in a nice niche at $5K that is hard to beat.

Maybe a new S35 sensor camera with PL mount and P2. Even better make it a shoulder mount camera. I could see that.
