One last stupid question...

I've been reading and researching this so much, I think I'm either lost or overthinking it.

Please, give me basic answers if you can

The initial rules to the contest said: "shoot 24p and 16x9 (either squeeze or letterbox)"

Okay, did that.

Now, submission requirements 16:9 anamorphic. Fine, so I figured out how to get my letterbox footage stretched up to fit that requirement, and without losing TOO much quality. Good, done.

We SHOT in 24P but did NOT edit in a 23.976 timeline (we used 29.97). Does that mean I have to find a way to convert my 29.97 footage to 23.976?

And how do I encode?

at 23.976?
at 24?
at 23.976 with 2:3 pulldown?
at 24 with 2:3 pulldown?

Or can I just submit my 16:9 anamorphic, shot in 24p but edited in 29.97 film as is?

Any help appreciated. I'm really tired of test-encoding this movie over and over

I believe it needs to be 24P. I am not sure how you'd go about converting it. I edited in a 24P timeline.

i accidentally edited at 29.9 fps. what i did was export it from FCP at 30 (or 29) then in your compressor export at 24 (or 23.9). i'll know if it worked tomorrow (im not using my own computer.) ill keep you posted.

Jim,

I used Mpeg Streamclip and essentially did the same thing (exported to a 23.976 fps quicktime file). It SEEMS to have worked... looks okay.

But then when I encode I have the 4 options I mentioned about... not sure which one is right? 24p, 24p with pulldown, 23.976 or 23.976 with pulldown.

im not sure about the pull down. i ended up using cleaner 6 and just used the default option in regards to pull down

Well, here's what I found out since then... when I tried to burn it to DVD I got a message that it was an invalid framerate and to "go back to your encoder and add pulldown".

Problem is, when I encoded with pulldown I got what you'd expect -- audio and video sinc problems.

Well... that sucks. It's kinda tough to say what your problem really is without knowing your entire workflow. Did you shoot in 24p or 24pa? Have you done any intermediary renders?

You pretty much need to do the 23.976 output with 2:3 pulldown for your final output.

Also, here's an article that could help you figure out what you need to do to get good 24p results from Final Cut.

Hope you get it figured out!

Well, from what it seems, if the requirement is that the film must be 24p I guess I'm out of luck. Unless someone can tell me how to convert to 23.976 with 2:3 pulldown from a 29.97 movie, I have no idea what to do. EVERY tool I've seen is meant as a "pre edit" option for converting 29.97 to work in the 23.976 fps timeline... and that's not where I'm at. I've got a finished product.

This is REALLY discouraging :(

Don't sweat it, you did shoot in 24P. At this point, upload what you have--your 29.97 file shouldn't have any problems for posting. If you're selected for the DVD we'll let you know if we need something else.

THANK YOU Barry!!

Could you answer one last question quick... can I upload the letterbox version (how it was shot), or the uprezzed for 16:9 version ?

If it's 16:9, upload the anamorphic (stretched) version. If it's wider than 16:9, you'd still upload a 16:9 anamorphic, but letterboxed.

Well mine is done on a 29.97 timeline ..Studio 10 will NOT work in 23.97 ..so I guess I'm out for the DVD ..
Vegas 6 here I come.

Ian

Canopus pro coder didnt have a anamorphic setting. I recorded squeezed 24p so it looks fine on a monitor and plasma but wont letter box on a 4x3 tv.

I may find myself in that boat, if my little ditty is selected.
Because of a mistake in editing, I also am on a 29.970 timeline.

I have a question that hasn't (at least not that I'm aware of)
been asked...

Since only the top films will make the DVD cut,
will that lucky bunch be able to submit an extended
cut
version?

Call, I think it was asked (if I remember correctly) in the long thread about content requirements... I *think* (but don't quote me on this) that yes, the lucky get-on-the-DVD people will be able to submit extended versions (for full credits and such).
