On Odyssey Firmware Update

There is a good deal of stuff that is locked into what comes out of the camera and what comes out of the code Sony has us use. We have to "get it to home plate" ourselves, but it's not in any sort of form end users could do anything with. The information is in a unique form that could not be addressed in Resolve or any standard color correction program. It needs to be "pre-treated" to get where it can be used.
 
Mitch - can you possibly elaborate a bit more on "LUTs will be selectively routable to the OLED, the Image Analysis Tools and the video outputs with greater control".
As someone who has been scouring the marketplace looking for the ability to have playback LUTs for the FS7 - and passing this output (or even possibly a different lut) to a larger client monitor - this is certainly great news.
Any info would be appreciated and any updates on when the new firmware might hit the market would be great.

Not going to give an update on the timeline. As soon as we can make it available we will.

When the new firmware comes out we will also publish lots of info on the LUT system, but here's some of the basics.

There's a LUT library contained in the Odyssey. A folder with a bunch of presets provided by us, and then additional folders into which you can load your own. To load a LUT, generate one in Resolve or other program that creates proper 3D-LUT .cube files (Pomfort is another great choice). Once generates, use a free App that will be available on our website to transform them into the binary structure that the Odyssey will read (and will keep your LUT safe from others stealing it). Load this file onto an SSD and then load this into the Odyssey. From there you can save the LUT into one of the folders, add additional info in the notes field, etc.

LUTs can be applied to different locations. Once you choose which LUT you want from the library, tapping the LUT button will toggle it on & off the Odyssey OLED panel. There is a menu in the LUT controls (and replicated in several other locations in the Odyssey) to determine where else you might like the LUT to go. It looks basically like this:

SDI A OUT: LUT OFF LUT ON Mirror OLED (LUT & OVERLAYS)
SDI B OUT: LUT OFF LUT ON Mirror OLED (LUT & OVERLAYS)
HDMI: LUT OFF LUT ON Mirror OLED (LUT & OVERLAYS)
IMAGE TOOLS LUT OFF LUT ON Mirror OLED (LUT)

Here's how to translate this: Select the Monitoring Tool (aka Image Tool) on the bottom. This is referring to the Waveform, Histogram, Zebra & False Color. Do you want these tools to measure the LUTted image or the original signal? Here is where you decide. LUT OFF means that the tools will always read the original signal, LUT ON means that the tools will always read the LUTted image, and Mirror OLED means that the tools will switch what they read based on what the OLED panel is showing. Whenever the tools are reading a LUTted image, a green bar will span between their tabs on the Lower Tool Bar to indicate this.

Each of the video outputs (SDI A, SDI B, HDMI) can be addressed individually, both from one another as well as independent from the OLED display. LUT OFF means that the output always shows the original signal. LUT ON means that the output always shows the LUTted image. Mirror OLED (LUT & OVERLAYS) means that the output will show whatever the OLED panel is showing, including if a monitoring tool is displayed (meaning that a tool such as the waveform will be displayed on the output).

Here is a scenario where these settings might be used in an advanced manner:

OLED set to LUT ON. View the intended look to set your lighting and exposure.
IMAGE TOOL set to LUT OFF. Meter the original signal so that you know how much room you have to adjust in color correction.
SDI A OUT set to Mirror OLED. Send to a larger monitor on set so that you can have the LUTed image and the unloved meter to view while adjusting lighting.
SDI B OUT set to LUT OFF. Send to DIT to "pixel peep".
HDMI set to LUT ON. Send to client monitor (maybe via video transmitter) so that the client always sees LUTted image with no monitoring tools in the way.

There's plenty of other ways to skin this cat and we leave it open for clients to use the tools in the manner that works best for them and their individual shoots. In the future there will also be the option to choose to send the LUT to the video recording, thereby "baking in" the look.

There's even more to it than that, but this gives you an idea of how the system functions and what you could choose to do with it. It is an extremely powerful tool and unlike anything else currently available.
 
Mitch, I'll spend you guys a beer if we get LUT support in May and after that the ProRes HFR update without any further delays - has the "Firmware Timetable" been changed already?
 
Mitch - thanks so much for the detailed info. This sounds very promising, particularly like all the options it'll present and likely means I will be purchasing the 7Q - quite frankly as much for this ability without even mentioning it's recording ability.

We have many clients who never record a single shot on their Odysseys. It is a very full-featured device.
 
Reviving this old thread as earlier in the thread Mitch indicated that CD was working on getting us SLOG3 from the FS700 RAW signal, just like what Atomos does now with the Shogun Inferno. Dan Keaton, do you know if the SLOG3 is still being worked on?
