Olympus 9-18 in 2 outfits?

When I search for the Olympus 9-18 lens I come across 2 different lenses. One that have a wider front and the other that hasn't. This last one has a silver ring on the camera side end.

Can you tell me why? I only assume that one of them is an older type, and I can find the first type some Euro cheaper on the web. Is it wiser to buy one or the other?

Thanks

The larger 9-18mm lens is made for Olympus Four Thirds mount cameras, and requires an Olympus or Panasonic adapter to use on Micro Four Thirds cameras like the GH1 or GH2.

The newer "M.Zuiko" 9-18mm is a native Micro Four Thirds lens which works directly on the GH1 and GH2. I have one and it's amazingly light and compact. The auto-focus functions also work smoothly in both AFS and AFC modes.

yes shot at 9mm...so equivalent with the 2x crop 18mm...

i tried the panasonic 7-14mm but at twice the price and much larger size (but better quality by about 25%) i really prefer the stealthy 9-18mm

[So these lenses fit strait on the GH2,also are there any lenses [any make] with a similar range to a canon fit 28-300mm that i have that are four thirds fit.
Four Thirds is different from Micro Four Thirds. So which one are you asking about?

And, you said "Canon fit" -- in order to know the range, you have to specify -- are you talking about the field of view of a lens on a 5D? or a 1D? or a 7D? They're all different. If you're talking about matching the range of a 5D, yes there are lenses that cover that in both 4/3 and m4/3, look for the 14-140 and 14-150 lenses.

For a list of currently available lenses that will directly fit the GH2, look to this page. It doesn't have absolutely everything (it's missing the Toy lens) but it has most of the others.

I also have the m. zuiko 9-18 for m4/3 and it is the perfect wide angle lens for the GH cameras, nice and compact (yet still has great smooth/fast AF) and very sharp.

My lack of lens mounts etc is apparent i have used camcorders for years and my first DSLR was a canon T2i 550D pal, i presume my GH2 is micro four thirds and the m .zuiko 9-18 obviously,so if i decide on a longer zoom i have to make sure it is micro four thirds,my other option is wait and get the expensive birger adaptor if it gives on camera control of my zoom lenses that i have from when i sold my 550D.It seems there are only 2 long tele zooms and the olympus is a fair bit dearer than the panasonic, this is what i miss all the available lens choice with canons,Thanks
