Official Oscars discussion thread

Yeah I started coming around last week on this film. Still not entirely stoked on on the ending; lack of .. but goddamn, it's almost as if the first 2 1/2 acts just nail it.

Like Frogs falling from the sky almost, one almost is left shocked and then in awe.
I was glad that they recognized a film that wasn't wrapped up in a neat little bow at the end. Like most conventional Hollywood movies submit to.

As I've said before... I loved it. Including the ending. It was shocking, but not in a bad way. At least for me. :D

We better not give too much away in this thread though.

Cheers,

Mike

I'll give away the ending:

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS!!!!

Anton and Bell get in a huge car chase/gunfight, which eventually leads to Anton and Bell on the roof of a skyscraper, guns drawn on each other. Ed then take a coin and says "Let's settle this...your way." Anton agrees. Ed flips the coin and asks Anton to call it "For everything" Anton picks tails, saying "Tails never fails" and it lands on heads. Ed shoots Anton, who falls from the roof of the building to his bloody death. Ed looks over the side of the building, at the dead Anton and says "See you in hell...friend-o..."

I don't know why everyone is complaining about the ending so much.

It's a good thing that Hollywood is experimenting and making attempts at unconventional cinema this last year.

Bourne Ultimatum editor deserves that oscar for sure. I cant imagine how many hours of footage was dumped on him and the Oscar decides to give the finger to big budget "hollywood summer" flick, the transformers. Guess Oscar is really going indie this year. heh

Yes, I too was pleasantly surprised with some of the winners.
Hopefully this trend continues!

Yes I bet the editor had an sickness assistant in case he got sick of viewing all that shaky footage.

I must say that the only film I watch that won is Ratotuille and it really deserves the oscar.

I fully agree. I just saw BOURNE ULTIMATUM this weekend, and was extremely impressed with how the editor was able to handle that horrible mess of shakey-cam footage he was given! He skillfully put the pieces together in a way to minimize the motion sickness potential as much as possible... (In several places, I noticed that a shot would end with a quick change in camera movement direction, and the following shot would then continue that same direction of movement, instead of starting out with no movement or movement in a different direction. *Very* helpful for the viewer!)

The action sequences were also edited extremely well. I always had a good sense of where we were in the scene. So many times action scenes just have a whole of chaos going on, and I can't tell for sure what is really happening from one shot to the next. Here the editor made sure that the viewer could actually follow the action. Excellent!
