it looks like you have some export issues, the footage is very choppy and quite low resolution for xh a1

Yeah I know it is my rendering settings. I rendered in vegas 7 as a mp4. The grabs are the real size and quality.

Canon Total Image Control PDF:

XH-A1 Presets Motivated paper ( CamelLabs)

Excerpt:

[DHV] Horizontal/Vertical Detail Balance [–9...+9]. Together with HDF, controls the
balance between horizontal and vertical details on the picture. Human vision and nervous
system is organized in the way which, ceteris paribus, attracts more attention to horizontal
details (along vertical axis) than to vertical details (along horizontal axis).

My best preset ever: Vision 7

My best preset ever: Vision 7

Vision 7

Pro: it's already broadcast safe.
Pro: safe whites are nicer too, and more filmic
Pro: slighty crushed blacks, give more pleasant contrast
Pro: great skin color, even after cc
Pro: by using very simple cc, you get great filmic colorimetry
Pro: i like it! :)

Con: the model is ugly as hell!!!
(BTW: Letus was OFF and focus was arbitrary)

1234714814.jpg

This overexposed take is still pleasant and has a typical filmic response

Magic hour

Outdoor preset is warm (the face is ugly btw)

1234715027.jpg

A slight cc makes everything even cuter retaining a good skin color

1234715086.jpg

Achieved with just a little cc

No more sun
1234715193.jpg

No cc

1234715253.jpg

With little cc it has a very modern look

Very slight CC used

Thanks for all the great Presets

Thanks for all the great Presets

Personally- I tested most of the presets - Panavision is the best according to the comparisons I did. I tried directly using standard "Tungsten" and "Daylight" witebalance.
I have a question on white balance - with most presets the standard "Tungsten" and "Daylight" works fine. But the manual whitebalance on "A and B" does not seem to function. The white balance cursor blinks and stops but I don't see any change in how white is interpreted. If I have the factory preset or preset is off - whitebalance functions on the A and B switch.
I looked up XHa1 whitebalance and it states - if CMX or any of the color gains are set in the preset that takes precedence.
My question - what is the procedure for whitebalance (for A and B) while using presets?

from now i will never use auto white balance but only preset. I want the real color of the scene. I will always have the time to correct it in post

Just turn off automatic white balance and that will allow you to use the WB button.
Yes you can use the button together with the presets.

How do you correct wb issues in post. Got an issue on one of my wedding projects.
One time it was cloudy another it was sunny. Will using a special plugin filter work
just as well?

auto white balance is always off

auto white balance is always off

My auto white balance is always off.
My concern is whether using presets with CMX (1 or 2) and Colorgain > 0 supresses the Manual White Balance.
The XH-A1 manual saying something on this - it is not very clear.

Need some suggestion - What is the whitebalance technique you suggest using your preset. I am finding I have to stick with Pre setting for "Daylight" and "tungsten" .
Manually using a white-paper on subject and using the WHite balance preset (A or B) does not set the whitebalance right.
According to the XH-A1 manual - Preset has precedence over whitebalance when CMX is either 1 or 2 and COlor gain and Color Matrix is above zero.
If you experts can throw some light on it would be helpful

Wait... Is everyone on here turning their white balance off? Doesn't that create a hella lot of time spent in post production? Also, slightly off subject, but does the steadycam turned on lower the picture quality?

Think film. Film has not the wb button. in some cases you put a convertion filter on the lens, but mostly you just grab the color as it is: greenish with fluorescent, yellowish with tungsten, blueish at dusk. Let the ambient color balance tint your footage. Tinted footage is cuter to me. And as you have great cc plugins you can still adjust the overall balance. Or you may just want cooler whites, or greener blacks. It's just a matter of taste

Thanks - just want to confirm the setting
Auto-White-Balance - OFF
White-Balance set to "PRE" - Daylight or Tungsten

or is it
Auto-White-Balance - ON
White-Balance - NA

or does this work (for presets with Color Gain and Color Matrix and CMX - cine1 or cine2)
Auto-White-Balance - OFF
White-Balance - set manually (does not seem to function for me with presets as mentioned above)

Panavision 2 would be a great preset for weddings. Give that a shot, much better in low light. If you need even more light, then you'll want to go to Normal Gamma.

Did a night stage shoot with Panavison2 in a multiple color lighting environment. Used auto white balance as I wasn't happy with dialed white balance or manual as the lighting was very radical and dynamic.
Gain was mostly at -3DB. The footage is simply stunning and I would highly recommend this preset. Thanks Papa. It totally rocks.

My feedback concerning Panavision
I did a day shoot with dramatic landscapes and beaches. I did find d that it was to contrasty and tended to saturate heavily. It faired well with the ocean though. I'm back to Truecolor with sharpness set to -5 and alway white balance with this preset coz it tends to throw a blue cast if not.

I have a preset i found on vimeo by a guy named "The Prime Eights"

He made a mix between Vision 3 and Panalook 2 and i actually kind of like it!

NR2: off
