Ok am i just stupid or what? how come i have put some presets on the card and when i put it in the camera and try to load them the names don't come up. for instances black bit i don't see it doesn't read black bit still, on the camera I see presets numbered can someone help me with this . Feel free to call me Im on the west coast and work grave yard so call anytime, I can sure use some help. 503-730-0051 thanks all. Chas

I have a few questions about Presets in general. Is the purpose of a preset to reduce the amount of time spent color correcting in post? Or is using a preset a better way to preserve quality than having to tweek it in post? What do they do for movies or commercials? Do they use presets?

If the camera was 16bit 4:4:4 no compressed you just would care about avoiding overexposition, but as this camera is highly compressed HDV, the more you tweak the image in post the worse it get. So it's good to get the best image possible before compression in order to have an usable image without cc.

Thanks Someday for the response. Could someone suggest a preset for me? My next project is going to be a car commercial. The location is a back road with the car driving on a road with many trees in the background to pick up rays of sunlight. I'm looking for deep blacks since the car is half black. Would bitblack be a good preset?

My latest and favorite preset is VISION 06, which has moderate saturation, high contrast, low gamma.

I'd look into just how much blacks you can get in post before crushing them too much, or pushing too much contrast in camera.

My experience tells me it's much easier to increase contrast in post than cut it down.

Ok i see people talking about presets like panacolor abd black bit and links to sample video but where are the list of setting for them

They're all in this thread - takes a bit of searching but they're all there.

and don't search for "black bit"..you won't find it. you'll find a bunch of sarcasm though...haha...lots of great presets here chas

IMO when you have to deal with HDV, drastic changes in gamma / contrast are nicer before tape than in CC. That's why i try to get the right colorimetry in the camera and only adjust white balance in cc

black bit lol

black bit lol

Yeah yeah Im blond I turn words around all the time. I don't really see a lot of presets here I see people talking about then but not the settings for them. I see a few. I found a spreadsheet on another site dvinfo.net it has like 19 presets. one I found on there is called pfvision I think its great for low light and the color is great I do use the nr filters. I shoot for tv news so at night my camera is set to 12 bd gain. Now I just have to wait for a fire, car wreck or shooting, to see if I like my new presest.

Cheers

i have noticed a lot of the presets have both NR filters off i love them in low light they take away a lot of the gain noise NR 1 low and med is great hing can smear NR 2 you can use high med or low

i have a question about these presets. like you all, i want to get the best out of my camera. i used the panavision preset on a shoot yesterday but changed the blacks to "stretched" and the ped to +9. I did this because i wanted to capture as much detail as i possible could by shooting "low contrast" then in post, i crushed the blacks and ended up with very clean blacks and less blown out highlights. Do you, more experienced, preset users suggest this method or are better results acquired pressing the blacks in camera?

i would press in post. nice to have the less contrasty original footage. hard to effectively un-crush with pressed in-cam footage.

Hi, Good question. I hope someone -next to me- steps in. I am sure you started reading this file: http://downloads.canon.com/cpr/software/video/XLH1_TotalImageControl.pdf

The detail balance and frequency setup is a setting you could experiment with if you try to make optimized settings for lets say 'Nature' shoots. Shooting natural environment, streaming water, fogg, waving fields. Nature shoots can be 'soft' and less detailed without interference. Sometimes detail can frustrate the viewing or printing process, so you see jitter freq. like moiré. Trying to avoid that you can alter the H/V freq. setting.

Coring is also a setting that involves detail, if you set coring to the max you lose the fine detail but you lose the small grain particles too. Shooting progressive or interlaced also makes a difference. The F-mode already is changing the H/V detail balance itself. You need to take care in combination with he sharpness settings here. You don't want to end up with having outline enhancing that is creating a artificial sharpness look.

that link dosnt work says i dont have permission to download it or something close to that

you can stretch and raise pedestal no problem.
I just like having a closer image to my final when i capture, thats all. Both great ways to do it though.
