OFFICIAL A1 Custom Presets thread

Glad to hear it's working out :). I'm commented on your video on vimeo. I'll be doing some shooting this next coming week so can't wait to get new footage uploaded. Hope you don't mind but I linked your video on another site to show how the preset looks until I get my own up within the week. If you'd like me to unlink it, just let me know.

Thanks!

put together another comparision between

True color

Panavision

Fanavision

Here they are In the same order:

truecolorcopyoc5.jpg

panavisioncopypu8.jpg

fanafilmcopykq7.jpg

Observations:

Panavision removes the green bias that Truecolor has and has the truest whites out of all three images, which were all identically white balanced.

I tried going to cine N and Cine 1 with panavision to see if i could gain some extra light, but the problem there was that i lost much of the color and it became very washed out.

Fanavision gained tons of light compared to the other two settings, but the downside is that the Normal Gamma curve makes the image similar to a video gamma, with little place for adding contrast to the image before it becomes too contrasty. Adding a curve to the already dark darks and bright brights pushed the contrast too much in my opinion, so i guess there you would really need to adjust your lighting with that preset.

I still prefer Panavision to the other two at the moment, until somethign else comes along that allows me to have panavision color with the light gain. Once i figure that out ill maintain the Panavision name with the newest preset adjustments.

Great Test! Thanks PaPa.
I would try Fanavision by closing down 1 or 2 f/stops. You should obtain less overs and lower gamma... maybe. But i don't know if it's nice.

Hey Giovanni,

Just did another test to figure this bad boy out. It seems when you go cine normal, and bump up the color gain on the color channels, you also lower the detail by a HUGE amount. You can see this easily with my tests above, and even more so with the following tests.

Panavision2 (more sensitive )

Gains more light, near identical color and is slightly softer than previous panavision.
Here are the settings:

Panavision2

GAM 1
KNE L
BLK P
PED -4
SET -7
SHP 3
HDF M
DHV 0
COR 0
NR1 0
NR2 0
CMX 1
CGN 10
CPH 0
RGN 31
GGN 32
BGN 33

seems so.

I still prefer panavision due to the cine gamma 1 which seems to have a lower contrast on skin tones, the normal gamma and 1 have a higher contrast so blemishes are more visible under curve adjustment.

The more you blast the color gain the more it seems to blur the image. It's definitely a fine line.

Seems like there is a tradeoff for each thing you adjust

Want more sensitivity? Then you will lose sharpness and have more noise

Less sensitive will yield a sharper image, darker, but cleaner.

It seems as though we've come to the roadblocks of what he camera is able to achieve quality wise.

The tradeoff is there, i guess it's just up to you to decide what is required for a particular shoot.

I could'nt agree more.

Just wanna say a huge thankyou to PaPa and someday for working out these optimum settings!! I really should buy you and the other bright heads here a drink! Such valuable free advice, thankyou all.

Yeah guys, thanks for all the hardwork. Without you guys, I wouldn't have "the" preset I've been looking for. Seriously. Thanks so much!

Now the one thing that is still bugging me is still a small subtle difference. The preset is having a hardtime with the rich violet/purples which also is part of the reason I suspect it has a hard time with the rich pinks.

Here's the color that it looks darker blue than violet :

Cottonelle.jpg

I used that exact product to test the presets color ability on and it still had close to the same issue as vision01. :( All other shades of blue are perfect as far as the difference in shades and color. It's more the richer purple and dark/rich pink area of the color chart thats giving me a hard time. Easter egg purple comes out fine as well as lighter pinks.

Can you please tweak just that part PaPa? I'm not sure if you have to add red or take away blue. I don't have the program loaded up which let's you test the settings live.

Thanks for any help in advance!

Found out why I could never get the purple dialed in :

Man I love this forum :).

i tested Panavision 1 and 2 today and made a 2 minute clip. let me know what you think!

PaPa, these presets are great, and as mostly an observer here, i think you've done an awesome job with these! same goes for all the individuals here that have helped me and didn't even know it...i love this forum.

That was some really beautiful footage skinny. Thanks for sharing, and thanks for the plug ;)

First off, I'm gonna say, I've seen a lot of XHA1 presets and there's only a handful of them that are really any good.
Those Panavision presets are up there for sure but like many others I found one thing that's hindering it from being "perfect" and its a pretty big thing!

You see, there's this ONE specific shade of purple that I've encountered a few times and it ALWAYS comes out blue blue BLUE! Whereas in real life it's a very vivid purple...
Now I know that it's partially the fault of the camera as most digital cameras have issues with the color purple, but it's just a damn shame! The only presets that seem to actually represent the shade of purple I'm talking about, happen to be the default presets in camera although they don't portray the vividness accurately!

Anyone else notice this??

Read my post a few posts (#195) above yours. I said the exact same thing. Read this to get the explanation :

not to put the kaibosh(sic?) on your conumdrum (sic?)...purple is my least favorite color, so it's never been an issue for me. i just avoid it anyway...the dollhouse in my latest clip referencesd above has odd shades of pink green yellow and purple, none of them all that vibrant, but the Panavision presets kept them true under some pretty shabby lighting...anyway....

i know what you mean though about the purple....good luck man :-)
