OFFICIAL A1 Custom Presets thread

I'm looking for a Seattle type look

I'm looking for a Seattle type look

Disjecta: Since you live near Seattle I'm looking for a look like a typical misty Seattle day. IE "the hand the rocks the cradle" look. Do you have any suggestions using the VIVIDRGB modification. I need it for both exterior and interior shots. Very low light situations...most likely a 500w key light with CTB and possibly just white balancing it using a Magenta gel to get that blue haze look. Any suggestions that I can just make a preset in the A1 in order to bypass the constant white balance method. Thanks Ps I'm using the Letus 35 with Nikon primes.

Smithy, I'm not sure what you are asking me. Creating presets is an art in itself, not something you can just throw together quickly. I'm a little confused about you white balance reference. There is no preset that is going to preclude white balancing unless you are willing to just go with the built in white balance presets for sunlight and tungsten. If that's the case, you can use any preset, just be prepared to do some work in post. The thing about VIVIDRGB is that it's totally neutral (free of color casts) so you could play with the color gain, etc., to try to get a balance you like.

It's just hard to answer your questions because what looks good for one person is going to be ugly to another. It's all subjective.

Thanks Steven...I'll try with the gain a little bit. I'm not familiar with the other settings but what I do is that when I white balance using a color gel in front of the lens it tricks the camera a seeint that color as white. Then in turn makes the image into whatever mood i'm trying to to give the viewer. What other settings besides gain should be tried. Thanks again

First, grab the Excel spreadsheet with all of the Custom Preset file info. It's called XH-CPF-20061204. Then get the eighteen .CPF files and copy them to an SD card in a folder called PRESET. Insert the card into your camera and you're good to go. The procedure for calling up the presets is detailed in your operator's manual on page 81.

PRESET01.CPF "FACTORY" is simply the Canon factory default settings.
PRESET02.CPF "AC PREF1" is Alister Chapman's prefered general setup.
PRESET03.CPF "AVG FILM" is designed to emulate an average film stock, best used with 24F / 25F.
PRESET04.CPF "5248FILM" is supposed to emulate Kodak 5248 film stock, best used with 24F / 25F.
PRESET05.CPF "LOWLT12" is for shooting in low light with 12db gain.
PRESET06.CPF "OPTICONT" is for optimum latitude, similar to AC PREF1.
PRESET07.CPF "5296FILM" should be like Kodak 5296 film stock, best used with 24F / 25F.
PRESET08.CPF "TERRA1" is a soft unsharpened image, shadows retain detail without looking washed out.
PRESET09.CPF "TERRA2" is like TERRA1 but sharper, with coring turned down to keep noise levels at bay.
PRESET10.CPF "DISJECTA" most resembles the colors Steven Dempsey used with his Panasonic DVX100.
PRESET11.CPF "B&WJECTA" is B&W with detail in darks without blowing out lights, no diagonal stair-stepping.
PRESET12.CPF "NOMAGENT" negates the Magenta bias that some Canon owners detect in factory settings.
PRESET13.CPF "OUTSIDEN" gives the Canon a neutral image outdoors while managing bright whites.
PRESET14.CPF "OLEGWARM" is warm and saturated and film-like when combined with Skin Detail: Middle.
PRESET15.CPF "DVXMATCH" closely matches the Panasonic DVX100 at WB of 3200K; also try Knee: Auto.
PRESET16.CPF "EOSPHOTO" is optimized for Canon EOS photo lenses; much brighter with more contrast.
PRESET17.CPF "NATURALO" closely resembles natural outdoor colors, requiring minimum correction.
PRESET18.CPF "PANALOOK" is Steven Dempsey's preffered setting which accurately emulates the DVX100.

Problem with presets is that you keep changing them... Its playful and you learn a lot...And so did disjecta with his vividrgb. There are completely different versions with the same name, but in real are completely different. In the vividrgb version above, the color gain is very high ( +40) , but in other version it is much lower (+25). Same for green gain etc. The latest version vividrgb is described somewhere above by disjecta.

Before I had many presets, now I killed a lot of them to keep it in overview. I do have some that are not described. Some people change the presets in a strange way, like going in + and - with the same amount on the same color. Or like going in a colormatrix with +42 and say they found a neutral color on the scope. Or the use a -3 db basic amp and an NR1 setting at the same time.

Well, its just nice to play with isn't it? And it all changes when the light -so the white- is changing. Keep up the good work.

Here's the final VIVIDRGB. Please disregard any others. Thanks.

If you are using a 35mm adapter, dial down the color gain to 0, the sharpness to 0 and the HDF to mid. For some reason, these adapters tend to produce very vibrant color so adjustments are necessary.

Maybe this is a dumb question but how do I copy the presets to the SD card? I don't have a slot for it in my Mac Pro. Can i leave it in the camera and acces it through firewire?

you can copy the files over using a digital camera while its connected via usb. that would be the next option.

Hi I'am new here and from Holland, so my writing will not be very good.

I've found 3 new presets from a site in Germany, I'm still using them. Nice colours, deep black...

Att: you should put your camera on "K" (white balans on top of the camera), Put AGC =off and AWB= on.

1= daylight
2= dark with some lights
3= very dark

Auch dieser -3dB Preset wurde noch ein wenig von mir optimiert.

Das sollte erstmal für heute reichen, ich setze mich nun in die Sonne und lass mich mit Kaffee und frischen Kuchen verwöhnen.

Thanks for the adjustment using for the adaptor. I just shot some footage the other day using the older settings and made my actors look like they had sunburn on a cloudy day. The reds really popped out so I had to reshoot and readjusted to normal settings without the preset to get everyone back to normal again.

I didn't have any trouble getting the 18 initial presets onto my SD card a few months ago, but I put PRESET25 (VIVIDRGB) on there today (in the PRESET folder) and it's not showing up in my camera. They still just go to 18. Did I do something wrong?

With colors as usual : do what you want, do what you like. So the next passage you can see as-->

My personal opinion <-- on these presets are: going in automatic Knee, with noise reduction on Low, together with -3 db gain, with a shift to +42 in the Red Green matrix (on a 50 scale!) looks maybe good on the scope...but filmmaking is not the same as being a technician. These German presets are made to equal the Sony handycam colors (baah..) with the Canon on the scope, looking for "neutral scope safe colors". You see trailing, ghosting, exceptional hard green, and lousy red.

Sure, with black press you mostly have black darks, but on a big test with over 125 images shot with many different presets I always disliked these three presets, even without knowing these were his. For color correcting its a disaster.
I say eeaakk.

I do agree about the green colours, for the rest I think it gives a great picture, but what setting are you using?

Others, depends on what I want to achieve, build my own, did many, many tests. But even the sky looks like candy sweets with the above. The greens are unreal.

Shooting stills is different then shooting moving objects. We all have our own chemistry in our heads, so maybe the blue I see is completely different from yours.
;~) And... what 's gone is gone, what's pressed is pressed.

My XH-A1 just arrived yesturday evening

I am very busy setting up manually the VIVIDRGB customized profile. :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

I do not understand where can I get the following settings under the lcd menu:

Color Gain: 25 and the Color Matrix: Normal

Can you help me? :crybaby:

Thanks!

Ive got some confusion loading the presets. I have them on the card, I can load them. But -it seems-- that Im only able to load 1-9 - as a destination?

Then when selecting the presets via the Custom Preset > Select, button ....I seem to be able to go to 18....

Hi,

Put your preset to folder PRESET ( upper case ) in your sd card. If your last preset is preset18.cff than rename next to preset19.cff

It will see

I am having the same problem. I have 18 presets on my card. But can only install 9 of them.
