Off to Cambodia..worth upgrading from a 60D?

I haven't had a lot of time to play with the new firmware but it seems they have really improved the rolling shutter in 4k. I don't have much time to do tests right now but just the little bit i've done so far I have a feeling it will work much better with non image stabilized lenses, IE adapted lenses. Also the hd looks a lot better.

Thanks 'Deadhumpy' and Michael,

appreciate all that....

At the end of the day all the contenders offer positives and negatives...a few brief examples...

Sony A7s - awesome low light..bokeh...lousy auto focus..no 4K without Shogun
GH4 - great all rounder
Canon 70D - uses exisitng lenses...but stuck with a loupe...and no 4K or same level of slow mo
Samsung NX1 - awesome image..but still a few challenges
Canon C100 - professional features built in like XLR inputs....just not as discrete or range of slow mo...+ a tad expensive...

(But it is worth remembering and being grateful for how far we've come....my first video camera experience as a kid was the big VHS cams in the 80's with the strap on VHS recorder over one shoulder!)

I think I'll go with the Samsung NX1 +16-50 2-2.8 lens.

Samsung seem like they are actually really supporting this cam...http://www.dpreview.com/articles/37...te-with-improvements-for-both-photo-and-video

Then my 60D for B cam...it still today does a great job..particularly when I get a nice tight shot with that 50 1.8 lens...great 'filmic' bokeh when combined with grading in post....

And then the cherry is the Samsung NX1 to hopefully get some beautiful scenery + general purpose footage mixed with slow mo and timelapses...

In a few years I can then consider retiring the 60D and the Samsung can get relegated to B camera status..and the Gh6 or the NX3 or the A7S iv can take the lead! :) (Or maybe Canon will even return to the fray!)

Thanks all...has actually been enjoyable reading all the various debates...hope some of it is useful to others also considering choices between all these cams...

Will aim to post back here when I return...
Way to go!

Hi,
4 weeks out from the trip now...so just about to order...but do still sometimes wonder whether I should save a tonne of cash and just buy a 70D! All the advantages of the NX1 are what still appeals...

3 Questions:

1.) Crop factor effect on a Samsung NX1: Will shooting at 50mm f/2 on the Samsung 16-50S Lens have the same visual effect as shooting on my Canon 60D at f/2 with my 50mm prime? ie. depth of field effect....zoom effect etc.?

2.) Does anyone have any experience using EOS lenses with an NX1 and an adaptor? Is the Fotodiox Pro the best option? (Gives me some use of my 70-200mm F/4 lens, I realise I'll need to manually focus and use a variable nd filter to control exposure, and probably a tripod...but it does still let me use the lens)

3.) Which 'bang for buck" variable ND filter? At the moment I'm leaning towards the Genus Eclipse ND...or maybe the Tiffen? Thanks!

Edit: Since writing this the NX1 is on order! So thanks again for all the help! Look forward to trying it out...will aim to do some comparison footage with the 60D to see what differences there are between the older generation and the current...

The 60d crops a bit more, the NX1 is about 1.5 and Canon is about 1.6, the FOV will be close, but the Sammy will be a tiny bit wider.

I always buy the generic adapters and get a few to test them out, tolerances aren't always the best so be sure to check them for sharpness across the frame. Fotodiox doesn't seem to be better than any of the others, they all look like they're coming from the same factory in China. YMMV.

All variable ND's have issues with color casts and they reduce sharpness, it seems to be a real roll of the dice as to how much, for every good review you can find one trashing the same piece of gear. Google around, the Genus gets a lot of positive comments. I used the Singh-Ray (supposedly one of the best) and a generic one off ebay and the $12 ebay version was actually better - less color cast and it was sharper, so I sold the Singh-Ray.

Thanks for that PhotoChris...appreciate the reply...good to know FOV is close to what I currently have...

I've just ordered the Genustech 72mm filter....is actually on special at the moment so seemed a pretty good buy. Thank you

With regards to the adaptor I found this Fotasy one at Amazon that is quite a bit cheaper than the Fotodiox...http://www.amazon.com/Fotasy-NXEF-Samsung-Mirrorless-Adapter/dp/B00BTRO0RC

Quite a few people are complaining about how difficult it is to remove from the lenses though...which is a bit concerning.

Do you have a link to where you've sourced your generic adaptors?

The other thing I have to look into is batteries...original or third party? The camera store is talking about getting one of these bulk battery charging packs...

Thanks for any other thoughts from anyone!

If you don't have an external charger, you have to charge in camera with USB - and its really slow. I would say a couple external chargers are a must. I only have OEM batteries for the NX1, but I have generics on all my other cameras. I always get Wasabi from Amazon. I get all my adapters off Amazon too, so I can order a few and return any that aren't perfectly aligned - and there're always a variance in how tight the lens attaches. I've had some that were really tight and some with lots of play.

Cheers.

Chris

Thanks Chris, appreciate that...I've just ordered a Fotasy adaptor...will see how it goes....was a fair bit cheaper than the Fotodiox.

The other thing I'm considering is one of those USB charging packs....something like this:

http://www.msy.com.au/mobile-phone/12231-patriot-pcpb90002-fuel9000mah-2xusb-power-bank-battery.html

I'm guessing I will be in places where there is no power...Does anyone know if these things are worthwhile...what features does one look for in one of these? Thanks!

Fotodiox makes an Eos to Nx with an aperture ring and blades built in for $79. I have a standard Fotodiox Olympus to Eos standard mount and it's quality machining that fits and also has an adjustment.

Thanks Michael....probably should have bought that one...didn't realise it had aperture control....but will try the cheaper one and see how we go. (I'm probably happy to shoot at 1.8 with my 50mm..so should be ok)

Have you got your NX1? How are you finding it?

Not yet, I'm shooting at Sepang F1 in KL this weekend for my client ASIACUP youtube channel and nobody can handle the H265 files. I shoot all day and upload rough driver interview clips so I'm still using the 60D and 600D for this job. Here is a link to the channel. The picture still looks good for youtube. I offered to get the NX1 and shoot this job in 4K, but they said, I don't know what that means. That's clients.

What I really want it an Ursa Mini 4K but not available, I'm heading to NYC for July so probably go shopping at BH for the NX1.

The ASIACUP vids are pretty cool.
Thanks,
I'm shooting a 6 race series tomorrow and Sunday. Hope get up to speed with 4k for the Aug events. Problem is we need to upload a ton of interviews the same day so H265 will take too long. I'm editing in my hotel room till midnight as it is and back to the track at 7:15am
