Odyssey7Q

Hi Dan K.

Since there is so much information on this thread, can I just sum up what I thought is coming with the 7Q upon release? I just need a refresher.

1) 10 bit 4:2:2 HD possibly up to 60fps
2) 2K RAW at HFR up to 240fps? Is 60fps and 120fps possible with 2K RAW?
3) Uncompressed 4K at 24 or 30 fps?
4) The usual 4:2:2 8-bit, only up to 30p since the SDI only does 60 Interlaced.

Thanks again Dan.

Dear Gene,

The Odyssey7Q will support:

1. HD-SDI and HDMI Inputs.

HD-SDI can be up to 1080p120 to a compressed codec.

In the initial firmware, it may be limited to 1080p60.

HDMI will be limited to up to 1080p30.

2. Sony FS700 Raw support, an extra cost option, will support 2K Raw, in 12-Bit Linear, written to Cinema DNG, up to 240 fps (using two SSD's).

The 2K Raw, 12-Bit linear will also be supported at 60 fps and 120 fps, and these modes only require one SSD.

3. Full Uncompressed recording, up to 1080p60, in 10/12-Bits will be supported.
Of course, this depends on the camera. The Canon C500 can output HD in 12-Bits.

("Up to 1080p60" means 1080p23.976 (23.98), 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94 and 60, depending on the camera.)

4. Sony's FS700 should be able to output, over HD-SDI 3G, HD in 4:2:2, up to 1080p60, and our Odyssey7Q will be able to record this.

Please note that this is not easily determined by the FS700 specifications, but I checked with Sony and they reported that this is possible.

We also plan on obtaining HD, in 10-Bit from the FS700, as well as recording 4K to a compressed codec.
The exact release dates of these two features have not yet been determined.

Respectfully,

Hey Dan,
I have zero experience with 2K Raw, 12-Bit linear. I DO have experience with HD, 10 bit and a 10 bit compressed codec. From a workflow and hardware support standpoint, I would think the 10-bit HD is more pragmatic than 2k RAW. I have no concept of which one of these will produce a cleaner image after grading, however, I will buy the FS700 upgrade in order to get the 10/12-bit HD compressed. I hope this isn't delayed for too long as this is where I will put my emphasis.

We shot some footage this weekend, but we want to shoot some more before we post it.
I am very sorry for the delay.

I wonder… Dan
two months have passed. You have something to show?

in any case, thanks

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the response. So the RAW support will be an additional cost on top of the existing basic FS700 7Q codec cost ($900 or something like that I believe). So will we have to pay twice for FS700 codecs?

Think he's saying there is support for it, with the extra cost option that we already know about. Just phrased kind of weird.

Seems like a chart may be needed to keep all the formats straight... Seems like it could be a pain to not have all options supported at all formats or at least have one recording codec that is available in all modes...

4k is only DPX or prores? Nothing else? Maybe something more compressed? I've never seen much need for more than ~40MBps shooting 4k on RED... 100MBps 4k prores is still a lot. And still only up to 30fps? or can it do 60fps? 120fps burst?

2k/1080 from 4k? It's not clear if that is available and at what framerates and what codecs..

2k RAW is only available in 12bit cinemaDNG? I don't suppose there is much reason for anyone to use 2k from 2k RAW unless they are using 100-240fps, right? And those are not available in compressed codecs? Only in DNG RAW at ridiculously high bitrates?

I often do jobs that switch between 24fps, 60fps and 240fps, it would be a real pain to have to deliver in multiple very different formats and have different SSD requirements each time I want to switch to a higher framerate. And anything >100MBps seems like a pretty huge burden for any production and probably would get very little use from normal users.

Very interested in the 7Q for my FS700, but can't really pre-order till I get a clear idea of what formats and options are available.

Dear Olga,

I am sorry, but no, not at this time.

Our engineers are working with Sony Japan to ensure 100% accurate color on our monitor and on external monitors, in these raw modes.

We are making great progress in many areas, but have not concentrated on creating footage that we can show.

Dear Gene,

No, full support for the Sony FS700 is included in only one extra cost option, and the US price is $795 for this option.

I hope this helps.

Dear Jshbckr and Gene,

Thank you for pointing that out.

I corrected my original post, as I did say "options", when I should have said "an extra cost option".

Dear Cuervo,

Thank you for your vote.

We want both of these options to be ready as soon as possible.

It is tough to decide which one to tackle first.

Hi Dan,

I can see you will have a booth at the IBC in Amsterdam next month, do you think you will have an Odyssey 7Q ready with an FS700 at this time ?

Maybe you will be there in person ? It would be nice to meet you !

Regards,
Stephane.

Hi Dan,
I can't find mention of it on your site or elsewhere but can you confirm or deny that the 7/7Q has anamorphic desqueeze? More and more people are using anamorphic lenses nowadays from amateur to professional and as I use them a lot if it didn't have that feature I couldn't use it as my primary monitor when using anamorphics and would have to plug my DP6 in aswell which would be frustrating. Looking at your monitoring peers in the FS700 area like SmallHD, Alphatron and Zacuto, they all have an anamorphic desqueeze. Hopefully it's just not mentioned in the specs or is a simple firmware update coming before release?
Thanks in advance,
Toby

I feel you on this one, but sadly, I think that's the folly of the FS700 AKA: The Red Headed Step Child of the F5. Sony has obviously put everything into the F5 and the FS700 has been left out in the cold and I guess we just have to get what we can get even if it's not ideal because our camera is a lot cheaper than the F5. I'm just happy that Dan at CD is making the 7Q, or else we would be stuck with the Sony recorder that was designed for the F5 / F55 and horribly re-appropriated for the FS700 (which nobody is going to buy).

Dan is now saying that they will be able to get 120fps into a 10bit 4:2:2 "popular" codec. That is pretty dang good. If they could squeeze out 240fps in the said 10bit 4:2:2 codec, we can just call it the day :)

Hi Dan,

Am I correct in seeing that the 7Q will include a wireless blutooth hook up to monitor remotely on an iPad/iphone? If so, that is awesome!!!! That's a great resource to have if there isn't time or space for a proper video village.

I can't imagine Bluetooth having the bandwidth to send any sort of video stream. I'm almost certain it's for iOS/Android control. Meaning we could start/stop recording, perhaps change settings, etc.

Even the GoPro app has horrible lag (over 5 seconds) using WiFi, which is far faster than Bluetooth.

Wait, are you saying it isnt possible to switch between different framerates on the same disk???
Switching from pal to ntsc might not work but you got to be able to switch from recording from 24 to 60 (25 to 50) on the same disk..... right??
