Odyssey7Q To Record FS700 4K RAW

So in summary, once the Feb firmware is released, the Odyssey will be able to cope with everything that the FS700 throws at it? That's now way beyond my initial expectations!!

Forgive me for throwing back to some of the less sexy features, but any news on shuttle controls for playback?
Correct summary.

Full deck controls for Odyssey playback coming soon, but not in this release.

Really looking forward to this release! Well done Mitch and cd team :)

Playback from 7q to external without camera/video source connected? Future release?

Not quite. The HD 422 from the 4K signal will be 30p only with 60p support coming in a later update if I've understood thing right ;)

I don't get the "popular codec" jargon. Why is it a problem to just say what it is? I for one still don't know what popular codec is. Is it Prores? If so, why can't you just say Prores?

Certain companies like Apple have rules that you cannot claim to advertise using their trademarks until you've been approved and licensed by them to do so. Convergent Design is not allowed to claim ProRes functionality until Apple has given their approval of the implementation of the codec in the Odyssey 7Q.

So, we "know" that this codec is ProRes, but officially, it cannot be said so just yet. At this point, it's more of a running gag than anything. We all know what we're talking about, but we're playing a little game of talking around the issue using the "popular codec" pseudonym.

Hey Mitch,

I'm sure this has been asked before, but is it possible do various levels of RAW compression kind of like how the RED does it?

Hi Gene !

While I can't answer in the name of Mitch, I'm pretty sure you can't change RAW levels of compression. I suppose you thought about Redcode when asking this question. I do recall that the RAW stream that's outputted by the camera is already slightly compressed to cope with the 3G-SDI bandwith, but it's purely a data compression, not a... how can I say ? A visual/psycho-visual (like psychoacoustic in that sense) wavelet compression like RC.

However, I saw some threads these last couple of days talking about the possibility of compressing Cinema DNG files (like zip or rar does) that's supposed to save a huge amount of diskspace. Need to dig further into this. Some talks about having this feature directly on the OD7Q but it was just talking out loud, not sure if it has enough processing power to do it onboard.

Cheers,
Stephane.

EDIT : I just gave it a try and you can already ZIP or RAR your RAW files folder and win about 40% of diskspace.

Simply they are negotiating the licence and are under NDA until the deal is done one guesses. Prores does indeed need such a licence to implement.

Google Adobe's DNG compression. variable rates....now, CinemaDNG isn't, formally, a RAW format, but, nevertheless, it is possible.

Thanks Cuervo, I'll look it up.

I'm wondering if the variable Adobe DNG compression can be implemented in the 7Q recorder like RED code, so we can skip several steps that comes with using a post solution like Adobe DNG Compressor. That would be amazing.

Probably too complex though as S.Blanchardon mentioned.

What he said.

We do not change the nature of the signal we receive from the camera. ARRIRAW is faithfully ARRIRAW, Canon RAW is faithfully Canon RAW, and Sony FS700 -- well we do change that one. Sony asked us not to use their file format so we instead change it to Cinema DNG. But otherwise we leave such things alone. That is unless we're converting it to video.

Thanks Mitch,

Maybe someone can clarify for me as I'm probably miss-understanding RED RAW. I was under the impression that with RED, you can do various RAW compression ratios IN CAMERA (1 to 1, 5 to 1, 12 to 1, etc...), so when you download the RED RAW it's already compressed either lightly, medium or heavily; so you don't have to do the extra step of running it through a program like Adobe DNG Converter. Obviously, aside from saving drive space, this would save the Data Wrangler on set a lot of time as well as having longer record times.

Is my understanding of RED RAW all wrong? Or does RED RAW work the same as 7Q RAW in that you can only compress in post using an application similar to Adobe DNG Converter?

Right, except for the 1:1 part. Redcode RAW only supports 3:1-18:1. But Redcode RAW is a proprietary format designed from the ground up by RED (except maybe the wavelet compression scheme) and with it's own SDK and tools built and distributed by RED. CD probably doesn't have that much control over CinemaDNG, though it seems somewhat possible they might be able to add compression options if they put their resources toward it unless there is some completely unavoidable obstacle I'm not aware of. 7Q is a powerful piece of hardware, and clearly it has been programmed to encode uncompressed CinemaDNG so it seems that it could similarly be programmed to encode in CinemaDNG's lossless or lossy format if that strategy made sense to them. Obviously there will likely be great demand for it from FS700 users since 4k RAW produces relatively unimaginably large files without it, but it would have to fit CD's relationship with Sony and perhaps other complex political issues I imagine. I can imagine it may not be at the top of their list if it may anger Sony or since 4K prores is already a pretty good alternative. All in all, I would love to have lots of recording options since there are a lot of post workflows and production needs out there, and most probably, a more heavily compressed 4K might be one of them. One thing RED and Sony's F55 do well is let you record 4K without breaking 30MBps if you want to, and lightweight, accessible 4K is pretty handy to have for some lower budget or long take situations. 4K CinemaDNG lossy and Prores LT maybe? :)

Might be a tough sell on Cinema DNG Lossy if it's not well supported in post, though.

Does this imply that you intend to always leave the raw alone and therefore never compress it or allow compressed raw formats that require compressing the raw data in the 7Q? Or are you just clarifying that is what is done now but it could change?

That is what is done now. It is possible that it could change in the future, but we currently have no plans in that direction.

7 days left in Feb... is this FW coming out this month really?

Also, is there anywhere with the units in stock right now?

Still no unit for Rheinturmblau in Germany.
:(

One more week to go for the FW distribution.
I guess we have to wait for Big A.'s approval of the compressed codec, as Mitch is still forced to avoid naming the Babe. That timing might not be in the hands of CD. If the certification process could not be accomplished in time, ProRes might need to be dismissed this release to get other features out in the field. So keep fingers crossed.

I can certainly understand the frustration of those who have not been able to get their hands on an O7Q. But, seriously, CD said they would have a firmware up date at the end of February. That means the 28th, to me. Please, let's not start another fingernail biting, chomping at the bit, anxiety filled series of threads on this subject. Especially, if you don't even have an O7Q. This is just rediculous.
