Odyssey7Q To Record FS700 4K RAW

(Colorado Springs, CO) Convergent Design’s Odyssey7Q is the most capable portable monitor/recorder on the market. It can capture and display the signals from more camera systems than any other product. That capability will soon be increased even more as we announce that recording of the 4K RAW signal from the Sony PMW-FS700 will be available in the Odyssey7Q.

4K RAW recording will be a part of the FS700 Record Option on the Odyssey7Q. It will be made available as part of the upcoming February Firmware Update for the Odyssey7Q. Any current owner of the FS700 Record Option will receive the 4K RAW capability as part of the firmware update and at no additional cost.

To use the FS700 Record Option on the Odyssey7Q, an FS700R camera or an FS700 with RAW upgrade from Sony is required. In 4K RAW mode, the FS700 can output 4096x2160 up to 60p. This signal can now be captured on the Odyssey7Q. With the FS700 Record Option the Odyssey7Q can also record 2K RAW (2048x1080) at frame rates up to 240p.

Congratulations,
Sony and Convergent Design.

Any idea, how much uncompressed 4K footage can be recorded on a set of two 512 SSds, Mitch?

wow. Great news. Well done C-D! I second the question about recording time, how big will one DNG will be?

I knew it. That could be the telltale Sony may be coming out with an upgraded fs700. But who cares..RAW will surely extend sales of the fs700. Congrats to CD and nice move on Sonys part, much appreciated.

Whoa, way to turn a positive into a negative!

;-)

Convergent Design and Sony have been working together on this for a very long time. The reason this announcement came now is because the process took a long time, not because there is something else on the horizon.

Ha. I didn't mean it that way. And I apologize if it came across as negative. For any consolation, no matter what Sony or anyone else puts out this year I'm still getting the Odyssey7Q. It's a "must have" tool for anyone serious about production. It's proven to be a tremendous asset, I applaud Convergent Design for great products and wonderful customer service. It doesn't get any better. Thanks

Just adding a massive +1 to that. I wasn't expecting it and am ecstatic about that. Very happy to see it and so soon as well. I was getting a little worried about the 4K side too, so this is a really important thing for me.

Well done for all those behind the scenes discussions with Sony and good job Sony for letting this happen - it will help sell more 700s for sure, even if the next model does get announced.

cheers
Paul

Wow! This is amazing. Thanks to everyone involved. Now i guess i need some more ssd's, and that's a good problem to have :-)

Now im really counting the days until that firmware release.

Thanks again CD

This is absolutely fantastic news! The FS700 and Odyssey 7Q combination will be a serious and cost effective rival to most of the other competitors on the market, even those that cost two or three times the price. A must have tool for any low budget indie filmmaker. I'm so glad my 7Q arrived today as demand will no doubt mushroom over the coming months.

A huge thanks to Dan, Mitch, and all at Convergent Design and Sony for making this happen. Can't wait to start filming and grading that beautiful 4K image.

whoa!
or should I say "GIDDIYUP"

Sony Corp. just redeemed itself a smidgeon.....
....actually, a pretty smart business move by Sony. The more 4k content there is available, the faster 4k displays will increase in consumer demand.

OK, thinking, now.....according to mitch, 62 minutes in a Terabyte is about 275 MBps. A modern SSD in conventional configuration is good for about 200MBps. So, for real time playback of 4k data, we're looking at a system thruput of about 275MBps. hmmmm.....that's a RAID solution, fersure.

OH MY YES.

This is fantastic, THANK YOU!'

You sneaky little so-and-so, it's even coming out in the FEBRUARY FIRMWARE UPDATE?! I have to say that this makes up for every conversation I've had clients/collaborators that starts with "It will be able to do X.... with a later firmware update."

EDIT: Mitch, any word on how large a 4K RAW frame is? Or better yet, how much you can hold on a 256/512GB drive?

What format is the RAW going to be in? Will it be like Sony's solution or DNG? We did a short film with Sony's solution and it was a nightmare on the Adobe CC Workflow. I hope they have fixed it a bit or you are going to offer something like DNG.

I am super excited for this announcement! This just made my FS700 a serious contender for a very long time.

Thank you thank you thank you Sony and CD! :D
