Odyssey7Q To Record FS700 4K RAW

OH WOW! Woohoo, you guys certainly know how to deliver a surprise! Granted, I don't know how much I'll use 4K RAW, but it's going to be great to have it in the wheelhouse in case a job calls for it.

Thank you to Mitch, Dan, and co. for doing the behind the scenes work and to Sony for understanding how this is such a great move for them!

The thing about this flavour is that it should not be line skipping so should be very good..

Oh, for sure! I didn't mean to imply anything about the image quality - I'm sure it will be FANTASTIC. I just don't have much 4K business, much less ones that would require RAW recording. I have 2 256GB drives, so that's like 31 minutes of RAW recording. I'm sure someday a job will pop up that will be worth shooting in 4K RAW, but I still expect, for the foreseeable future, to be recording mainly in the compressed 10-bit HD or 4K.

However, that said, it's GREAT to have a bit more future-proofing and high-end capabilities in the 7Q so as 4K becomes more popular, I'll have this added functionality! So, so excited about this!

Thanks to Blackmagic Design company to start shipping Blackmagic Production Camera 4K for $3000 ... it help Sony to give 4K RAW option to Odyssey 7Q  :D

4K RAW is definitely more of a luxury thing and not something I'd pull out for client shoots or situations where I need to shoot a lot of coverage. Those situations will be perfect for the high quality ProRes supersampled from 4K RAW... hopefully that update isn't too far off in the future.

This has been in the works for a long, long time, I'm sure. But I you're probably right that Black Magic (as well as others, Panasonic with the GH4) are helping push into 4K this year. That probably made Sony realize that they needed an affordable 4K option.

The supersampled ProRes is also coming in the February update, so you won't have to wait much longer at all.

Whoooa dang, I didn't realize that. For some reason I thought it was left out of this one and that all we were getting was the 10-bit ProRes (not supersampled, so it's only 8-bit in a 10-bit wrapper from the FS700's output)

OH MY YES.

This is fantastic, THANK YOU!'

You sneaky little so-and-so, it's even coming out in the FEBRUARY FIRMWARE UPDATE?! I have to say that this makes up for every conversation I've had clients/collaborators that starts with "It will be able to do X.... with a later firmware update."

EDIT: Mitch, any word on how large a 4K RAW frame is? Or better yet, how much you can hold on a 256/512GB drive?
At 24p. two 512G SSDs (1TB) will hold 62 minutes of 4K RAW. Divide in half for 512G, and so on.

What format is the RAW going to be in? Will it be like Sony's solution or DNG? We did a short film with Sony's solution and it was a nightmare on the Adobe CC Workflow. I hope they have fixed it a bit or you are going to offer something like DNG.

I am super excited for this announcement! This just made my FS700 a serious contender for a very long time.

Thank you thank you thank you Sony and CD! :D
Cinema DNG files, same as the current 2K RAW capture.

This is awesome. 4K RAW will be great for those VFX shots.

The FS700 will last for years now IMO: Slow-Mo, great dynamic range, NDs, S-Log2, 4K RAW and true 10-bit 4:2:2 HD coming. Those are crazy / dream specs for $12K. Unless something out of this world comes out at NAB, not sure it will be beat this year or even next.

It's nice to know that I probably can not buy any cameras for while and finally put some money towards my 401K, an exotic tropical surf trip, extra mortgage payments and other important stuff :)

But before that, I gotta order 2 new CD SSDs!

BEST NEWS EVER !

Thank you Convergent Design for holding fast, thumbs up for Sony who stopped being stubborn and congratulations to all of us !

So do you still need that stupid raw module add-on from Sony? Or are you talking straight from a stock FS700 to an Odyssey 7Q?

Great news! I love big surprises like this and it will come in super handy for vfx shots. Pretty excited!
SSD sales are going to go through the roof, haha
