Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

This one is for timmytimetravel:

The Atomos HDMI to SDI converter is awesome. It sits on the back of the Blade perfectly and powers the Blade through the battery sitting on the converter! If I hear another customer rave about that little recorder I'm going to shoot myself. Just kidding. That little thing is absolutely perfect apparently...

But good news! The converter works with the Odyssey 7Q! In fact earlier I put the converter directly on the battery mount for the 7Q and then put a battery on it. Both the 7Q and the converter were powered off of on battery all neatly mounted together. The voltage reading on the 7Q will drop of course. It went from 7.7 down to 7.1 with the converter in the middle. Only thing is it is a direct conversion of HDMI to SDI. It wont convert one framerate or resolution into another. What you put in it puts out. But it does so seamlessly.

Slipstrea808, thank you thank you!

Atomos was my original goto, because of the battery design, just can't test one locally first.

just to confirm, you have it with the fs700 outputting 1080p 50/60 over hdmi, converted to sdi, and it shows up and is recordable as 50/60p? Prores and dpx?

This should also mean it would show up in multistream quad view (not just full screen quad view) for camera comparisons.

The manual talks about converting 60i to 30p etc (you have to hold down a button to activate pull down) so might also help get it and psf in some modes so that it can be handled in 7q with current firmware

I am glad to help if I can. But I do not think I can get it to do what you want it to. I can set it up. Just let me know EXACTLY what you want me to accomplish with it and I will see if it is possible. Not wanting to be hard-headed but I want to make sure so you don't waste your money is all.

Slipstre808, thanks!

All references to 50 can be 60, so long as same all way through.

Fs700 record setting. 50p hd (before we had raw 4k2hd) :) video out fs700, 1080p for hdmi (same setting as sdi pretty sure).
hdmi cable to atomos. Sdi cable to 7q.
Turn all on. Does the signal show up and is recordable in : prores, dpx, multistream monitor mode (suspect not here as above 30p)

if you had time you could check atmos manual, hold pull down button, set fs700 output to 1080i and see if you get 25p in mufti stream quad view. This is less important. If the first works, I'll buy it and test that.

if you run into troubles with first one turn fs700 output to 1080i, if signal shows up then we still have converter issues (or 7q issues receiving hdmi>Sdi converted signals (at least with 3 converters )

So many thanks!!!

No, or at least highly doubtful.

The chip that does this work is no longer manufactured. This is part of the reason the nanoFlash has been discontinued. Convergent Design will eventually include other options for lower bitrate recording on the Odyssey7Q, but these formats are unlikely.

Okay. Thanks. Good to know.

To be clear, the Odyssey7Q currently supports Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) recording in HD up to 30p. We expect to get that to 60P soon. In DPX we can record 1080p/60.

Multi-Stream will only work up to 30p. It will not support a 50p or 60p signal. Ever.

If you want to work with a 1080p50 or 1080p60 video signal, you can do so currently recording to DPX. Later on you will be able to do so reocrding in ProRes. You will never be able to record it or even view it in Multi-Stream. It is simply too much data (4x 1080p/60 is a lot of info).

I'm now an owner of a 7Q ... does anybody have recommendations for FS700 input settings and picture styles for 2K RAW or 4K2HD recordings? I would be glad to receive some hints. Thanks.

Straight from our tech support man:

The clip merger is to be used on a directory after it is transferred, and no since every clip is available individually, the "JBOD" or just a bunch of disks" is a method of combining storage when you have mismatched drives, and you wish to create a "sudo" Raid, that does not have increased performance, but simply shows up as "one drive" typically to do this on a system they need to format the disks to match. the formatting, and would destroy the data on the drives. So this would be bad.

For example if I had 3x drives two were 3TB, and one was 2TB, and I wanted to raid these this would result in a 6TB raid (Loosing 1 TB since each drive has to match) doing a JBOD method does not give you redundancy, or performance, it simply results in a 7TB "single mounted drive"

Unless they wish to purchase our SSD's and raid them or "JBOD" them together as their storage medium, which they are more then welcome to do.

Shame on me Mitch ... I forgot this link to explain my question: http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/blackmagicmultidock. do you think this BM device will work with CD's SSDs?

As long as you are asking the question, add this to it :) http://www.drobo.com/storage-products/mini/

I think the multidock is probaby standalone only vs jbod. Which IS what you want. Kind of like disks in an external non raid port multiplier cage. They show up as seperate disks. Not concatenated into a bigger disk. It leaves the structure alone unless you software raid them (which would then disturb the structure). I honestly can't see why in that config you could not just work off them. Personally though you might put some 2tb 2.5" hdd's in bay 3/4 and software raid 1 (mirror) them (like G-technology suggest you do with their drives). Clip merge off your starting ssd's to bigger storage you could still remove (in pairs).

Thats why i'm interested in drobo mini. Except I think its more going to be JBOD and less likely to be standalone. (and unlikely to be able to create one raid set out of only two bays). Its probably too dumbed down for that. Cheap onset offload if you have a laptop whilst keeping offload storage smaller.

That's interesting. I like the ssd video cases. I'm guessing the CD SSD won't fit though with the top handle? That's one thing about the CD SSD, they're not well protected connector wise. How susceptible are they to static damage? The sata connector was never designed for this kind of use.

I presume it's not designed for quick insert and removal of the SSDs though which would make it a bit of a pain to swap drives over. Also I very much doubt the CD SSDs would fit without taking the top handle off?

I don't believe this is a 3G rated cable or connector. There are many out there, but for on camera use I really like ours as they are Ultra-thin so flexible and don't get in the way. I never have a problem using these. They are $20 each and available thru any of our dealers.

Mitch, Visual Impact UK where I ordered my O7Q said about long BNC's: "Just spoken to Mr. CD in the UK and he said they don’t stock the various cable lengths like they do in the US, only the 12" version that I have quoted."

just so that you are aware there is a little bit difficulty in sourcing CD accessories here in EU.

First tests with 7Q RAW DNG in NLEs. Resolve: fine. AE: fine. Bridge: fine. PP: false colored footage and no access to source settings :-/ Any ideas?

Do NOT work off our SSDs without then reformatting them on the Odyssey before recording new material. Computers and various software add directory files and other little hidden drivers onto drives that they work with. Fine if they are general use drives on a computer, but such files will screw up the functionality of the SSD when used on the Odyssey.

Good Rule of Thumb #1: Whenever you stick a drive back into the Odyssey, reformat it immediately. This of course leads to
Good Rule of Thumb #2: Be sure to offload everything from the SSD as soon as you pull it from the Odyssey. And of course
Good Rule of Thumb #3: If you're going to offload the files anyway, why are you wasting the use of an Odyssey SSD on your computer when you could be working from much cheaper drives?

Odyssey SSDs are meant to get you over to the computer, and then you get them back to te recorder. The are transport media, not active work media, and certainly not archive media. That is unless you want to spend a ton of money on drives with us. The be my guest!

The Odyssey SSDs won't fit in those cases duw to the top handle. We have our own molded plastic cases coming soon -- it seems to tae forever to get these injection molded items. They will be inexpensive and small, kinda like the cases SD and CF cards come in, only bigger & a bit beefier.

The Drobo doesn't seem a good solution for use with our SSDs.

Adobe products such as Premiere Pro not currently supported. Soon. Adobe just announced the support as part of their NAB 2014 CC update.
