Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

On another note I've noticed that the 4K2HD seems to de-squeeze the image horizontally compared to AVCHD. The AVCHD has a slight horizontal stretch that I've never noticed before. Still blown away by how much better this 4K2HD image is

Have noticed this too: but it seems to me the 4K2HD is squeezed horizontally in comparison to the AVCHD. In other words: the 4K2HD looks 'thinner' by like 2-5%. Why should that be?

Not much time to make stuff, but here's a small comparison between the ACVHD and the 4K2HD (no cat or dog this time, but furry too!). No color correction or anything. Vimeo compression doesn't show the full wonder of the 4K2HD, but the difference is certainly there:

After many doubts about if I should buy the 7Q I'm very happy now that I did: the 4K2HD looks simply stunning. Much more detail: you can almost feel the textures now. The color available in the Prores files is amazing. And the prores seems great to work with. When you look back to your AVCHD footage it's shocking to see the difference. Big cudos to all the brilliant minds at Convergent Design!
Tried some 4K as well, but haven't got a good workflow yet. Adobe Premiere makes everything magenta; hope they will fix that soon. Importing in After Effects or Photoshop works great; stunning to see the resolution and the RAW possibilities.

Question: it seems that the Resolve LUT's that were made available by CD don't work so well with the Prores footage. I don't know much about LUT's yet, but is that because this footage isn't RAW? I don't quite understand how the S-log2 transfers to the Prores 4K2HD...

Sam,

Nice grade! :)

Sorry Clermond, privacy setting tweak. Link fixed. He is on a leash because moments before he was tear-arsing around the yard and banged into the tripod with my nice 4k shooting and awesome 4k2hd 7q and fs700 on it :( close one.... He's got to work on his modelling :)

Here he is wild and free in 4k2hd rec709 ungraded. Hit the source link for the original .mov. The original prores is not too big 129mb. So might upload that in the morning. (getting late in oz)

And here is the prores file ~130mb

Wow Plakkie. That is a solid difference. The texture difference is outstanding.

I think I saw in one of the new firmware readme's something about a new lut. But could not find it on the site.

If you are conforming the 2k to the specs of the 1080 you will be squeezing it, because 2k has more pixel width (2048px vs the 1920px)

When going from 4k RAW (dng) to 4k prores (mov), it seems I don't gain any time on my hard drives? I would think the prores would give me some more recording time :-) Or what is the added benefit

I went from 3.9gb to 1.2gb. Huge difference. That was for 11 seconds of footage. I used resolve to export to 422hq. What did you use?

Ah. Unless you mean on the 7q of course. Interesting. Have not compared yet

It does, it gives you loads more record time. On my unit this is recognised, if it isn't on yours. Check again, it may just be a bit buggy.

Thank you for the responses earlier and suggestions. I rolled back the firmware successfully and was working but updating again cause it to fail in recording. I'm moving this to PM's.

But there is no 4K ProRes available yet. Do you mean 4K to HD ProRes?

Mitch, is there a possibility of hd prores in 120fps? Not sure how this all works. Filmed skiing today in 2k raw so exited to see that shortly

I am very excited to see some skiing. Its finishing summer over here (oz), so none for me for a while. I'm interested to see it in 4k 50/60fps used to stabilise moving shots in post deivered in HD. Of course 100>240fps would be better, but if its not prores... Yikes. space! Amazing that its possible though, and unique.

Here is the prores file ~120mb for earlier dog rascalating the bird feeder.

you still have to sync audio manually in RAW. :-/

seems there is still room for improvements in future FW updates.

Well, guess its time to learn Resolve.

Are people editing the CinemaDNGs in Adobe, then coloring the project in Resolve later, or importing in Resolve first, applying a quick curve and then export to another, more Adobe friendly codec for editing, before final grade later on?

I've come across this, that if you have it set in the 4K2HD mode, but don't have the unit connected to a live FS700 signal, that the time remaining readout may give you 4K RAW time duration. But, the moment I start the signal running from the camera, it switches to the much longer ProRes recording time.
