Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

a little comparison ... its directly with 709 picture profile
Well that's the cat's meow.

Note not just the resolving power but also the lack of color fringing and depth. I think any aliasing or color fringing has to do with getting the images up on this forum post rather than what was in the actual picture.

It only happens between certain modes, and once some of them are loaded they will stay in flash memory for a quick change until they need to be pushed out of the way to make room for something else.

Our master chip can only hold a program loaded into active memory (as opposed to those stored on standby) of a certain size. We basically have room for two record/monitoring formats at a time. To load a new one up takes about three minutes (actually less, the longest it could take is three minutes).

To do it any other way would have meant a substantially more expensive, larger, heavier and more power-hungry device. We would have had to put in a bigger master chip and/or secondary chips.
Oh, so if I only use ProRes and FS700 RAW, then switching is faster? Good to know! I'll play around more to test it out. Thanks!

EDIT: Yep, I should have played around with it more. Switches just as fast as before once the modes are loaded into memory. Great!

Image looks great.

BUT, I noticed that Playback on the 7Q, I am getting all these crazy colors and glitches on the images.

It's only on Playback on the 7Q. When copied over to my Mac, the images look fine. I tried two different SSDs, and same results on Playback.
This is one of our known issues as mentioned in the release notes. We expect to have it addressed soon.

Holy hell this 4K2HD is sharp! Take a bow CD, you've given us a new camera!
We have a great team behind the scenes, but one of our guys named Ryan did some especially clever work on the 4K2HD mode. We all want as sharp a picture as possible but don't want aliasing. We all want rich color information but don't want color fringing. He very cleverly sent LUMA (for resolution) information through one path and RGB (for color) through another to optimize each. On top of that the traditional way to take a Bayer mask 4K signal to an HD video image is a fairly simple sampling mode where four photo sites (two greens, one red, one blue) become one pixel. That's effectively what we were doing previously as a simple monitoring mode. But this signal conversion is far more complicated and in the end far more elegant. Can't give away company secrets, but he should win an award for lateral thinking.

Autoflip doesn't seem to be working for me unless I'm missing something? It displays upside down. Anyone else have that?
Try rebooting to reset the internal inclinometer. If that fails please let us (me) know. If you need to defeat the auto flip mode, the setting is in the OLED menu on the Lower Tool Bar.

Hi Mitch,
I assume its recording ProRes HQ, are there any plans for different flavours of the codec? And if so, will this be available in the 4K2HD and the standard 4:2:2 to HD ProRes recording modes?
Also, I'm still getting the diagonal fine jaggy lines on high contrast edges after the update. Is this something that can be improved on, or is it the nature of the OLED? I thought it was being fixed?

Thanks.

The current implementation is Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) in 1920x1080 at frame rates up to 30p. That's a 10-bit 4:2:2 signal at 220mbps.

Here I need to go back to our old phrasing again.

We fully intend to implement additional popular codec formats such as 444, 4K and even higher compression Proxy levels. Where applicable we will implement them in our various recording modes. A 4K Bayer masked RAW signal yields enough color sampling information for a full 444 signal in HD.

As far as the "diagonal fine jaggy lines" go, is this in the recorded images or only on the OLED? It may be symptomatic of the 1280x720 image on the monitor.

Also, Mitch, not that it really matters for my usage, but is this ProRes 10-bit from 4K? I know you mentioned doing 12-bit in the future, just wanted to clarify what this was.
In 4K2HD mode, the recorded signal is Apple ProRes 422 (HQ), 1920x1080 in 10-bit at 220mbps.

"Note: 4K Super slow is not supported on the Odyssey7Q; the camera only outputs a maximum of 4K 60p, thus this mode will use internal buffering, and then will need to playback the footage to an Odyssey7Q."

Mitch, this was previously said as being supported, is it just expected on a later firmware or not possible at all?
How does the Sony RAW recorder does it?
To be supported in the future. The way this functions is to use the internal buffer that is normally used to capture slow-mo in the video mode. In this case it will capture 4K at 120fps, I believe for four seconds. Then it will play it out at 60fps. I have not yet tested whether this can be manually recorded on the Odyssey at this point, bu the double triggering gets complicated so for right now we don't have it supported.

Hey Mitch. There is a discussion over at Reduser. So the 7Q doesn't work with RED ONE? That's a bummer. It was on my list to use as a potential monitor. Can you please confirm.
We have not yet enabled the file name matching to the RED cameras and do not yet support 720P, which is the output of the original RED One.

I'll head over to REDUSER in a little while. I'm too busy being happy here at the moment after the past few weeks.

Glad to hear that works for you now.

Realistically, the vast majority of the time that's what you'll likely be switching between, no? We tried to make it work as logically and optimally as possible. If you need to go to something like Multi-Stream then you probably have a few minutes to spare while it reloads.

I'm also really happy to have the flickering/line gone! And color looks a lot better than before (couldn't really trust it before).

Flying out Saturday morning to shoot on an island for 7 days. This should help me capture some beautiful images in all of their glory. I'll be sure to get some 4K RAW landscapes. And I honestly can't express how grateful I am already for having ProRes. It would have been impossible to shoot everything 4K/2K RAW, file sizes would have been unwieldy, I would have had to fall back on AVCHD for most of the shooting.

Now I'm even more antsy to get out of this Minnesota snow.

I was mainly interested in the 4k RAW, but this 4K2HD ProRes really blew me away! Give this "Ryan" a raise!!! ;-)

Thanks Mitch. I was actually curious about more compressed formats, 422 and LT. Great to hear you plan to go the other way though:)

The jaggy lines are only on the OLED. They appear the most extreme on white in front of dark tones. Photographing a white power cable for instance against a black background shows the artifacting up the most. An object that is curved.

Good to hear that it might get supported in the future. Is it possible to debayer to 1080p too with 4sec for 120fps? Hope we will able to record at least 120fps in 1080p 10bit. My WISH

i've testing FS700's 4Kraw 120fps with R5 while, and this is the far most advanced, and unique function this camera has. period.

4Kraw up to 60fps, great! 4K2HD, super! but 4Kraw 120fps is the function only few camera on the earth can handle and FS700 is the one. this is very special thing for us.

so please CD, try this function available ASAP.

here's the link i uploaded few sample 4K size TIFF from 120fps burst. look that sharpness from slow motion footage :

i really don't care which recorder (R5 or 7Q) is better for FS700. it's very, very important that the camera, FS700, has this monster function inside and every user should have this very soon.

What's the wait time to get an activation code for Fs700 once you order from the store? I thought I had read it was an automatic email when your purchase went through but it's been nearly two hours since I've ordered and all I've gotten was confirmation of purchase.

I believe if you login to that area where you registered your device the other code shows up automatically on your account.
