Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

If you record 120fps and 240fps on the same cards, will they go out of sync?
When you are writing at 200/240 fps the two disks are set up in a RAID array, the disks need to be identical (i.e. in sync) in order for RAID to work. Footage is recorded across both drives at the same time.

If you are working in 120 fps (or lower), then RAID is not needed, footage is recorded to a single drive.

So if you record anything at 120fps or lower the two drives are no longer in sync and can't be configured as RAID, you will no longer be able to use it for 200/240fps filming.

Mitch has confirmed that this will be addressed in the firmware release, i.e with the new firmware you will be able to switch between frame rates (although 200/240fps will still require two disks)

Okay, so it sounds like I need 3 drives total, two for HFR and one for 120fps and under.

Thanks!

At least. You might want 4 SSDs regardless as you can burn through 2 of them them in 10 mins of shooting @ 240fps. It'll then take at least 20 mins to download them both (if copying to a fast SSD or Raid array via a thunderbolt SATA adaptor. BTW - you will need a SATA adaptor to download) longer if using checksums (about an hour for two) and/or using USB 3.0 or a slower spinning disk, non-raided hard drive (in my experience 1hr to a 7200 rpm drive).

With 4 drives you can shoot out two at 240, swap to the other set as they download.

Oh and don't forget to eject the SSDs properly before downloading them, or you'll enter a world of pain.

I expect that they're stressing a lot, and I'm sure, given the comprehensive and honest communication we have had throughout, that they would like nothing more than to be able to answer your question... but once they have that to give it will be swiftly followed with the actual release.

As pointed out already in this thread, this seems to be the way that camera companies are conducting themselves these days. Over promise and under deliver. Not cool.

A lot of unhappy campers are focusing their negativity at CD right now. That doesn't happen without reason. February update is now approaching late March. When I say, you will receive your edit "Any day now", that should mean within the next few days. If I then take another week to deliver, I expect unhappy clients. That's normal.

Prendi, I agree. Being unhappy with the situation is perfectly understandable and expected - CD did promise and could not deliver on their timing. They've accepted their fault and yet are still being attentive to the community. They probably have lost some customers in the process - it's the risk they took when developing within a new product category.

But to me, there's a difference between expressing unhappiness about all this and just not being understanding. To expect everything to go perfectly when it comes to new products and new product categories seems a tad naive. Delays are becoming normal in this business when you're on the bleeding edge - and I do believe the O7Q is very, very bleeding edge. So, a couple weeks late for a good product that is already far ahead of the competition is something I can still be ok with.

The idea that CD can put any kind of pressure on Apple is kind of absurd to me. Apple is one of the largest, if not the largest, companies on the planet - they move at their pace. I have a feeling CD is just a tiny blip on their radar. All CD can do is try to damage control and take measures in the future to prevent situations like this from ever happening again, which indications so far show that's exactly what they're doing.

Again, I would never say that I'm happy about this situation, but I also don't think CD would expect any of us to be happy about this - heck, I bet they're not happy about it either.

I Totally agree.

It's about time this 'early adopter' willingness gets the respect from manufacturers it deserves.
You, Convergent Design, are simply treating us like s*%t.
And yes I might be the first one to make this statement, but I think it simply is about time we call things what they are.
There was a time a PROMISE meant something.

And ... if you don't want me to be this harsh ... then call the whole Odyssey 7Q 'timeline' a FARCE.

HD Studio 'was' a dealer for Convergent Design and after standing up for a customer who after 2 years never received the 'soon' , 'a little later' , 'end of 2013' DNxHD update for his GEMINI and as his complaint/case was about to go to EU court, we finally got a full refund for the GEMINI for the customer and .... funny ... were also told no longer to receive Convergent Design products afterwards. Fine. Don't care. What products ? Existing ones ? Something that works ? Something we can ship to a customer at the time we were promised, in working order ? With all the features promised ? etc ...

Me, HD Studio BVBA in Belgium, I am proud to have stood up for our customer in difficult circumstances and have given HIM the respect we think he deserved.

Convergent Design is in our eyes a US company that walks a very thin line with EU law on what they can promise as future features for a product and how they change them.

It is quite obvious the DNxHD codec for the Odyssey 7Q is becoming an issue again as it has been delayed from 'soon' to 'end of 2014'.
The ProRes story? Let's see when Apple wants to give them their certification ... strange that companies like Atomos and Sound Devices just bring out products that work ... they seem to be at least a bit better in sync with development. They don't PROMISE, just DELIVER.

No issues with the 7Q ? Let's start a thread on how many people really have badly working SSD's ' Mismatch ? Not possible to format ?

I sincerely hope my entry starts a VOICE of protest.
Convergent Design's way of 'spoiling' a professional broadcast market on a ridiculous amateurish way needs to end.

Why don't we just all cancel our orders ? ... and if wished ... re-order when things actually exist and work.
Why don't we stop pre-ordering on 'false promises' ?

This statement is written out of respect for the hundreds of students we train in our workshops, young people who aspire to make a living in this creative broadcast business and also for the thousands of customers my associated company has and out of DISRESPECT for the way of doing business from a company such as Convergent Design.

HD Studio Belgium sold 4 GEMINI Units over a 2 year span. So you can't call us 'important or big'. But we thought 1 (ONE) customer was enough to go to court with Convergent Design, because YOU deserve it.

Written on St. Patrick's day in Ireland. A day when 'truth and honesty' is the spirit of the day.

I am now very curious to see what will happen after I hit the send button on this post.
I will in no way react to any reactions or statements that follow.
I sincerely hope the power of this forum will be able to contribute in turning around the way our/your livelihood is being held hostage by false promises.

Sincerely Yours.

If anyone, Convergent Design has been a tad naive. Assuming that SONY will let them use their codec as soon as the 7Q ships - Assuming that they will be able to deliver the PopulaR cOdec for their February update.

What are you talking about? Are you trying to imply that CD doesn't actually have permission to capture the FS700 RAW signal? If so, you're wrong. They wouldn't issue a press release with the announcement if they didn't have permission. Same reason they haven't said the word "ProRes" yet, they need the paperwork before making an official announcement.

Has been a tad naive. Not is. However, they had announced 4k RAW before they knew that Sony would agree. Everyone knows what the "Popular Codec" is.

Are you referring to their announcement from just a couple weeks ago about 4K RAW? I didn't realize that was made without having an agreement. Do you have sources for these claims? I know Mitch (and others) had said they had the ability to capture 4K RAW but it wouldn't be a feature unless Sony gave them permission. Did they make this announcement without having Sony's permission yet?

Possibly, as I wasn't aware Sony had released a PMW-FS700, just an NEX-FS700 ;-)

No, I was referring to the original announcement at NAB 2013 ! ! ! (That made me buy the FS700 and subsequently the 7Q back in December...taking the 700 to Sony for the $ 400 upgrade, paying $ 795 for the Sony option , buying SSD's ....).

Woo Hoo, a little birds tells me today is the day. Counting down the hours......
I guess it's a simple eMail from Apple in someone's InBox and there we go.
They will not hold back the Firmware Release longer than necessary. I hope, they have a ready-to-deploy build at their hand.

And I guess Mitch or Dan will not hesitate to give us all an update, when they start the roll out.

Maybe we are remembering differently but all I ever remember hearing was that they can receive the 4K RAW signal but they wouldn't be capturing it. I think they were very careful about never saying that they would capture 4K RAW. I think many people on this forum would agree that up until a month ago the only way to capture 4K RAW from the FS700 was with the Sony recorder/interface.
