Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

If you guys are thinking it's been hard to get critical focus with 2k, wait 'til you try 4K!! It's a double edged sword. The Sony lenses I've used are crap. Got a couple of Canon zooms that are pretty sharp at 4K and a Zeiss and a couple of old 2x2 Mamiya Sekors that I love for the color balance. But the Sony kit lens is pretty soft at 4K. And MTF's are rarely published by Sony. I have MTF's for all my canons...otherwise it's hunt and peck for that critical f/stop.

Of course, Colin is right on. A sloppy mount like the EF has has all kinds of off axis aberration. One reason I like the Metabones adapters is because of how tightly the Canons mount on it. Sloppy mounts were never important with deep DOF (aka small) sensors, but with full 35mm aspect ratio's and 4K resolution, lens weaknesses, focus error, will be the bane of us all.

Hey Mitch,

We are all probably trying to read too much into what you write, but do you mean by this?

Thanks,

I think he means that future updates won't hinge on a 3rd party, i.e. how Apple is basically in complete control of this release. Future updates won't have that factor.

This daily anxiety is killing me! lol.
At least CD has learned from this mistake. With any luck, anything 3rd party that comes via firmware updates will always be a separate self-contained update that has no bearing on the bug fixes that CD can roll out on their own schedule. Also with any luck, this update we've been waiting for since the start of the year will fix all the bad stuff and quirks for good and everything after that will just be added functionality and pure gravy.

God I hope this stuff is properly production tested before we get it. So much stuff in the current firmware was so obviously wrong on the first day of the first shoot.
I'm one of the lucky ones who doesn't have deal breaker bugs and can still get a beautiful 2k picture, but I feel for those who can't even use it properly yet four and a half months after release. Ouch, that's a looooong time.

Yeah, I regularly have some flickering and a black line on my screen in 2K mode. Hopefully that is addressed. I'm really hoping for a much more stable firmware this time around.

What really sucks is that waiting for one thing is holding up everything. Why can't you split out the Canon c500 stuff? I am just back from a shoot in South America where I could not do what I wanted to because the Canon updates are tied into everything else. I bought the C500 on the promised updates. Why am I stuck waiting when what I need has been finished for sometime? This makes no sense.

Thanks,
It means exactly what it says. There will be a lot more control of what is promised, what is communicated, what is delivered and the schedule thereof. Don't worry, not putting it on lockdown, just cleaning up the messiness. Hope it will be seen as an improvement.

To do so is akin to untangling a single noodle from a plate of spaghetti. It isn't so easy.

You're clearly not a software developer ;-) Even though most modern programming is object-oriented, you can't just pull a piece out and expect it to work without a lot of regression testing... such is the way of computers :-/

well, of course you're totally right, Colin. It was a hasty plea born of irrational fear of losing my precious collection of Canon EF lenses.

Which is the beauty of the NEX and FZ mounts: they're shallow enough to support adapters for EF lenses, Nikon F, PL, Arri BL, and pretty much everything else!

Sami,

There is a LUT on the device at the moment and it is the one supplied by Sony to view SLOG2 in REC709.

Can you use the LUT while you record SLOG2 profile at 4K to Full HD popular codec? Or is it only available for raw?

I think the Rec709 LUT is just for monitoring. Although, if I understand Mitch's posts properly, you can record in Rec709 if the camera Gamma is set to ITU709 - then the O7Q reads the Gamma of the 4K Raw as Rec709, debayers it as Rec709 before downsampling to HD.

I can sympathize with CD, but I have been patiently waiting on the Odyssey 7 since last August. In January, I gave up and bought something else.
Over promise and under deliver is never a good thing.

This firmware update can't come soon enough. Dealing with a headache right now because the RAID SSDs kept saying "mismatched" and then the 7Q kept randomly recording and made a bunch of 1 frame clips. Now I'm offloading the few shots we actually were able to capture so I can wipe the drives.

And this is why I've mainly reserved the 7Q to "fun" projects and not paid client gigs. Current firmware is nowhere near ready for prime time.

I get the mismatched SSD's way too often. Is this getting fixed in the firmware upgrade?
