Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

This firmware update can't come soon enough. Dealing with a headache right now because the RAID SSDs kept saying "mismatched" and then the 7Q kept randomly recording and made a bunch of 1 frame clips. Now I'm offloading the few shots we actually were able to capture so I can wipe the drives.

And this is why I've mainly reserved the 7Q to "fun" projects and not paid client gigs. Current firmware is nowhere near ready for prime time.

I have even put off running some real world test with a potential rental unit until all of these issues are worked out. There is no way I am bringing this on set as it stands now. No reason to even run workflow tests with the limits of the recorder. I can just see a Director saying " Okay, lets shoot some 60fps stuff now". I just can't have that happen. I look forward to using this unit with the Canon C500 and Sony FS700 but will wait until CD gets this mess sorted out.

Yes. They've already said we'll be able to mix regular and slow mo on the same SSD.

Sounds good. For me though, and not sure if I'm doing it wrong, I have a single 512gb card I use for anything other than 240fps, and a pair of 256's for 240fps. When I capture with the 2 SSD's and then use the single card, when Igo back to the 2 SSD's they always say "mismatched" and I can't reuse unless I offload them and format. Is this an error from me, or is this specifically getting fixed if anyone knows? Thanks for the help

It's only happened to me a couple times. Just curious, do you put the drives back in the same order? I have two of my drives labeled "240FPS A" and "240FPS B" so they always go in the correct slot. I also try not to have them ever detect non-240 timecode. So, if I'm switching modes, I pull the 24fps drive, switch the camera to 240fps, put the two 240fps drives in, then roll. Pull the 240fps drives, switch back to 24fps mode on the camera, then replace the 24fps drive.

I had the same issue today. I got the mismatch ssds even in 120fps. Using 240fps

Hi Josh,

i also lain label them drive A & B and ensure they are placed in the correct slot, but it still mismatches for me

At this point my big fear is that we get a firmware update, they spent all the time on Pro Res, and the rest of it is riddled with bugs, and we have to wait until October for a new firmware release that addresses any of the bugs. Here's to keeping my fingers crossed, although at this point that hasn't been working out to well. Maybe it's time to expect less and be surprised if more comes.

I don't think that's the case. From what Mitch has said, they received technical certification a couple of weeks back so would have been working on other things since then. Also, he keeps coming back saying they've added new things to the firmware (4K to HD was new for a start, as was Rec709 recording) - so it's clear they've been working on other things all along.

Mitch, can you tell us what day the update will be available to download this week? "Any day now" is passing with everyday that isn't now.

The trouble is, they just don't know apparently - still waiting on Apple to get the legal paperwork sorted. So slow it's excruciating!

I hope they're putting as much pressure as possible on Apple to get this done. I think I'd be pushing this as far as I can if I had as many unhappy customers shouting at me ;)

Passing the buck doesn't absolve you from all responsibility. Apple never promised me anything, CD did. I decided to invest in a complete new system based on that promise. I do hope they come through very soon. Here's waiting for the "hours, not days" update.

There's not really much point asking CD to commit to a date though, it's completely out of their hands... as pointed out, it's as frustrating for CD as it is for everyone else...

True that, I'm being completely unreasonable CD. Take your time and don't stress yourselves.

It does seem a very inefficient system but then we don't know whats going on behind the scenes.

I expect that they're stressing a lot, and I'm sure, given the comprehensive and honest communication we have had throughout, that they would like nothing more than to be able to answer your question... but once they have that to give it will be swiftly followed with the actual release.

I think the CD team is laying on a beach somewhere laughing at us.

Probably on a bench built out of Odyssey 7 and 7Q which CD is backing off to offend their clients.

(if you find traces of irony in this posting you may keep them)

Shooting with the 7Q on Friday and wanted to ask about using different cards for different frame rates. If I'm shooting 2K RAW at 240fps, do I then need to swap out to two different cards when I'm shooting 24p? How exactly does that work?

Mitch already posted a few times that this will be fixed in the upcoming firmware update, so if its available (hopefully!!) beginning this week you can record all framerates 2K DNG without switching the ssd-drives. So keep refreshing this thread every 15mins like the rest of us ;-)

Sure, but if the new firmware isn't release before Friday (which seems like a possibility) then I'd need to have two sets of cards, yes? One to record the HFR and the other to record the 24p. Can you record 120fps and 240fps on the same cards or do those two frame rates require their own sets of cards?

240fps requires RAID, and so you will need two cards

<=100 fps can be written to a single card (I've not tried 120 fps, I believe it's also single card, I'm sure somebody else will confirm)

It is possible to write lower frame rate footage (i.e <=100 fps) to a pair that has already been used for 200/240fps, but once you have done that the cards will no longer be in sync, you will not be able to use it for 200/240 fps.

So the minimum cards you will need is three, a pair dedicated for 240fps, and then another single disk for lower frame rates (<=100fps), you would need to swap the cards out each time you swap between 200/240fps and lower frame rates.
