Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

I'm sure there will be competitors announcing recorders at NAB, but at least CD has the comfort (and me, personally, since I've already invested in the 7Q) of knowing that they are the only one with the blessing from Sony to capture the 4K RAW signal from the FS700. Hard to compete with that. Unless other companies were able to make some negotiations with Sony, as well. But who knows, maybe there was an exclusivity agreement between Sony and CD.

Honestly, I can't imagine many features that would make me want something other than the 7Q. Once more features are implemented (4K RAW, 4K Compressed, 4K to HD 422/444, etc) there is very little left for me to want.

Hey Mitch,

Could you possibly shed some light on the situation? I'm pretty sure it's out of your hands, but many of us are just baffled by Apple's paper work process. Is it that insane? I know Apple has a history of being a very arrogant and hard to deal with company.

I do have a paid job out of state starting on Thursday. Would be nice to get it before then. Is that possible?

But yes, any info on what is going on would be greatly appreciated. If anything just to calm our curiosity. I would rather hear: "It's going to be a few weeks because of ……" than to be on pin-and-needles waiting. So then, at least I can plan accordingly.

Thanks again and I'm sure the stress you are going through is way worse than ours.

+1

Just wondering something... a few chosen ones already have the new firmware because they are beta testers. Convergent Design doesn't break any legal issue with the "pomme/ringo/apfel" brand since it's an unofficial release.

So anyone who wants the firmware could contact C-D and ask to beta-test it !

Just thinking out loud but it could relieve some people that needs it in a hurry.

If you logically think about it... this is the reason the Odyssey 7Q rolled out so "early". It was a boon for them by and far! Problem is the FS700 might be "outdated" very soon. We will see about the NAB rollout. The PMW300 is already a wanted item.

That's a half-inch chip isn't it? In which case it's aimed at a completely different market: run and gun docco shooting - reality/fact ent style shooting PDs, APs and the like. The FS700 is clearly aimed at the indy feature, low end music video/commercial/corporate market. Totally different beasts for totally different markets. I'm not sure if Sony would be keen to supersede the FS700 quite so soon and it looks like Canon and Panasonic have totally different ideas about what they're aiming for and BMD clearly having troubles with the BMCC, so I doubt they will.

I can't really see any real competitor for the FS700 coming out soon from the usual players. Maybe the Axiom at some point, or possibly a super-low budget Red.

With the 7Q, I'm not sure about that, especially when the firmware matures (which hopefully will be soon): 2K and 4K RAW, 4:2:2 10-bit HD, high frame rate options, high dynamic range S-Log 2, great low light, etc.... Those are some amazing specs for a camera that's 12K.

Remember when the 4K BMPC was announced at the last NAB? People freaked out predicting the end of other camera manufacturers. I personally saw some footage the other day from a friend who just bought one. Granted, it was LA at night (not BMPC's strong point) but the footage was atrocious - Black hole spots in many headlights and crazy vertical banding on some shots and not other. The footage was borderline useless. Personally, I wouldn't touch the BMPC 4K with a 20 foot pole with all the current sensor issues.

With the FS700, we are already getting nice footage from the 2K RAW and it will probably only get better. I think the FS700 + 7Q will be still good a few years from now.

yup, I agree, Gene. I've no hankering to go back to 1/2 inch sensors. Sony is promising XAVC for this cam in future updates. Holey moley, where have I heard this before?

Oh, and Sony, if you're listening, PUHLEEEZE keep the E-mount(or go to a canon EOS mount :love4:)!!

While I think the FZ mount is a higher quality, I would rather have E-Mount just for the Metabones and Speed Booster. Plus, adapters for FZ mount are way more expensive than E-Mount. I guess in this case, I'd rather have quantity over quality.

Mitch,

Do you know when your team will be able to supply B&H with battery plates and sad to usb3 cables?
I'm not sure of the specific production & delivery schedule, but we are fulfilling all of the outstanding battery plate orders in the next two weeks.

To those who chimed in on my frame dropping issue a few pages ago I did get in a cable that someone else recommended. True 75ohm. It seems OK at 2K 24p but 240 high speed or anything in 4K and you get the lines again.

What the issue is is that red and blue lines ranging 5-25 pixels wide (guess) will jump up from the bottom up to 2/3 of the way to the top at least twice a second. They are there when you are monitoring, recording, and in playback. In post the frames are just dropped altogether. So with the cable taken care of it comes to either firmware or I have to send it in again. But I don't want to lose it for that long again. I'm really hoping this update does it!

As a rental house people have been clamoring for the RAW options but not much I can do without the day rental options. And ProRes. And I think it is too unstable right now to send out.

The Odyssey 7Q is losing to the Samurai Blade! :crybaby:
Please PM me so that we can work together to address this issue.

How long does it take to do some paperwork? Surely there's got to be more to this than that? I sure hope future updates don't take this long and have such HUGE delays. Not good at all.
There really isn't any great secret. It is a matter of when it is done it is done. We are waiting, and in the meantime continuing to do other work for the future.

If you guys think YOU'RE frustrated...

Oh please, no, not the EF mount! Why would you put a rubbish stills mount, designed to get past a swinging mirror on a mirroless camera?! It doesn't even have the benefit of being solid as a rock like the PL! Sony made the best decision by going for a shallow mirroless system mount as it allows room for plenty of additional features and adaptors for most lenses (like the speed booster and phase detect AF). Sure the NEX mount is crappy and weak but the FZ is pretty solid. If anything they should go for a new shallow variant on the PL - best of both worlds...

I would be the guys at Convergent have a bare-knuckls fight with Apple deadline of NAB. Because after that they will lose wind in their sails. Other recorders might be announced.
Don't know where this comes from. Has nothing to do with the reality of the situation. We have been specifically told it is imminent, as in any day now.

I don't see where I stated that it would be today, as in Friday the 15th. I did say at our event on Tuesday as reported here that I was hopeful for the end of this week or the beginning of the next.

You can be unhappy about it, but we can't make it go faster. Future updates will NOT be handled in this fashion as we will exercise complete control.

well, of course you're totally right, Colin. It was a hasty plea born of irrational fear of losing my precious collection of Canon EF lenses.

Probably not EF mount, but yeah, no matter how much people rip on Canon lenses, I'm very happy with the zooms. For primes, I prefer Zeiss, but for zooms it's Canon and I would hate to lose an affordable option that yields good quality. The Tokina 11-16, Canon 24-105 f4 on Speed Booster and the Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS II are lenses I cannot live without, at least on my budget.
