Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

Mitch, can we please get an ETA on the firmware? Could it be time to initiate that plan B you spoke about?

Thanks for the prompt response

FIRMWARE NEWS UPDATE:

We can now confirm that we will definitely be able to include the FS700 4K-to-HD popular codec in the "any day now" release. While I still cannot give a firm date as it is out of our hands, we are told that it is likely by the end of this week. As soon as we can, it will be in your hands.

With all that said, our initial release for 4K-to-HD recording is designed only for Slog-2. If you send a REC709 signal from the camera the colors will be messed up. That does not mean that we do not intend to make it fully functional for REC709 and other functionality in the future, only that this is what we have designed the first release to do.

Another update: Our engineers have done a bit more work and will in fact be able to include recording of REC709 in this mode IN THIS RELEASE. Because of the way the FS700 encodes its RAW, this function does not involve LUTs on the Odyssey7Q. When sending the 4K RAW to the Odyssey for conversion and recording in HD popular codec, set the Picture Profile on the camera to either SLOG2 or to IT709 (IT709 is another way of saying REC709). I believe this will also work for the extended range IT709(800) profile. Do not use other Picture Profiles at this time as they may cause odd color & contrast in the image. The INPUT STATUS WINDOW will indicate the input as 4K, the frame rate, as well as note either SLOG2 or REC709.

Thanks. Indeed as I have said before we have been tweaking the performance of this record mode. We wish for it to work very well out of the gate for people. We didn't know if the 709 variant would perform up to snuff in time so we were planning the SLOG2 for now, but are happy to be able to include the 709 functionality as well.

As for recording LUTs and programmable LUTs, we do appreciate the suggestions and will certainly take them into consideration. But that is not something for this firmware update.

Mitch thank you for the update.

another question for clarity:

Seeing as the first "popcodec" release will be a 30p max flavour, if I record 50p input, but the project settings are set to 25p, will I get a slow motion 25p popcodec clip result? I Hope I'm making the question clear. Basically, I'm hoping I can shoot slow mo from my F35, given the limitation of 25p codec. Will it record the 50p and set it to 25p internally on the 7q?

Many thanks.

Bring it on!
I'm fully ready for one more Friday disappointment.

Sorry guys, I don't believe it. I'm sure you'l understand why.

Thanks Mitch! I'm sure SLOG2 or REC709 are more than sufficient for now. Honestly, at Pure we'll probably stick with SLOG2 99% of the time anyway. It's just nice to know the REC709 option is out there.

Excited to fire up the update.

Ted

I do hope you're proven wrong but if I was a gambling man, I'd say you're spot on.

I just find it weird that they are still calling it popular codec. Surely by now, if they really were that close, they'd be calling it ProRes. Time will tell but I'd say we're still weeks away as appose to days...

Excellent news. You've made my day. Very much looking forward to it :)

They can't call it ProRes until the paperwork is final, which is exactly the thing they/we are waiting on. Clearly, based on Mitch's post, Apple/CD's lawyers are telling them it should be by the end of this week or early next. I understand the need to guard your expectations, but I have faith.

Plus, it's obvious that the CD engineers aren't sitting around waiting for this FW to clear before continuing work. As seen by the new inclusion of REC709, they're still chomping away at new features (4K compressed and beyond!) on the engineering side. I for one would rather them be focused on those features at the moment than being pulled away to make a bug release "Plan B" when Plan A is not too far away from being cleared.

Mitch,
any news about the "March Update", following the "any day now release" formerly known as "February 2014 Firmware release"?

The March Update could also be named "happy bringing 4K compressed recording for FS700-owners"-Update, using the popular codec, if the current delay adds up. Will there be a +4 week time frame after "any day now" arrives?

Little confused about the 4K poular codec option...Is it not going to be included because it requires an additional (or separate) legal authorization from the company or is not included because of technical work from CD?

I'm also curious to know when we'll get this. Don't get me wrong, a lot of us asked for 4K RAW but in reality it's unrealistic for most shoots.
