Odyssey7Q February 2014 Firmware Update

Mitch, Dan, et al?

I know it's trivial compared to all the coding work you guys have been conquering lately, but I was curious if there were any updates regarding rental options and the iOS control app? I have some stuff coming up that might benefit from it. any news would be much appreciated. thanks.

While it is now my policy that we will not be giving forecasts without clear indications that we can meet them within our control, I will state that I believe the Rental Sstem for record options will be coming sooner rather than later. About as accurate as I'm willing to get. No word on the other.

fair enough. thanks, Mitch.

Hi Mitch,

what's the general plan regarding feature vs bug fix updates? Are you planning on getting a purely bug fix firmware out to fix the various bugs like multi stream viewing before getting tied up in lengthy feature updates that might delay the fixes?

Thanks.

Second that for fixes as opposed to updates please. Working mulitcamera viewing options and a less crunchy 4K2HD. I cant use either as is. And one used to work!
Please work on the things promised. Don't promise more, over promising is real bad.

What do you mean by crunchy 4K2HD?

for me it's too much contrast in REC709 compared to HD REC709, it ends in crunched blacks
or clipped highlights, also purple edges which makes REC709 unusable.

sLog2 in 4K2HD has also higher contrast.
It's manageable but it's not what I would have expected from a Log profile.

Rather curious comments from Clermond and 35mill. Seems that CD made some esoteric decisions to bake in certain "qualities" to the 4K2HD conversion. I don't find them necessarily disagreeable, however, I can understand that some might. I wonder how much of this baked in look CD could incorporate into a "menu" that could be user adjustable like a PP? Fundamentally, I would guess, the adjustability would be a gamma curve adjustment like slope, power function, knee, and so on.

On thinking about this, if the capability exists to build and store a LUT for the RAW process, couldn't this be used to apply to the 4K2HD mode, as well? Technically, not what a LUT is designed for, but certainly an application that would allow in-camera adjustability of the 4k2HD processing.

P.S. yes, Mitch, give us an inch and we'll ask for a mile...

Yes I agree with the REC709 4K2HD image - WAY to contrasty and saturated. The SLog2 is a lot more useable ungraded than I would have expected (with my limited experience of Log I must admit) - but doesn't take much to make it a lovely image. Is that a bad thing?

Slog, Slog2 and Slog3 are all designed to look a bit more 'real' than cineon log or similar.

Having said that i'm not totally convinced that the Slog2 out of the FS700 in AVCHD is totally accurate either! But that's Sony so they can do as they please. I think the 4K2HD matches the Slog2 out of AVCHD pretty much 100%. Of course you need to be mindful of your levels and gain in Resolve so no artificial clipping is happening. For example my main app is Nuke and QT on windows is clipping the ProRes in Nuke (but Nuke allows access to the raw quicktime data so i can rebuild colour conversion manually - then it works perfectly)

I think one issue is the use of LUTs rather than accurate curves in Resolve but there's no way to use a mathematical curve is there? Having the ability to apply actual real curves would be a great help with all this transcoding - the Slog2 conversion shouldn't need a 3dcube and shouldn't be remapping colours (IMHO)

cheers

well, not a bad thing as long as you are on your own editing island because "sLog" is manageable well.
If you have to hand over your files to a standardized workflow it's getting more difficult because
a) REC709 is not usable
b) in sLog2 the editor/colorist has to twiddle and find individual settings (and not just add a LUT)

I totally agree with you, Paul, as regards Slog2. However a baked in "look" such as Rec709, is open to interpretation. I would think there should always be an option to record to a "finished" look, because there will always be situations where there is time constraints. Newsroom situations, for example, where time to render in a grade or aLUT to a finished product is limited.

So what's the status on LUTs? (not in relation to fs700)

Can I input and record a log signal from say c300 and output and view a LUT?

Mitch, sorry if this has been covered before. Does/will the 7q take 1080 50/60p on the hdmi input?

If it's the same as the rx10 bionz setup it's full sensor read at full frame, so comes out very nice. Swappable emount glass makes it a nice Bcam (with a dc coupler (tiny batteries)

i have an event in a week and I want to use uncompressed out from a sonya7 to get around 29min internal recording limitations. When I switch from 1080i (can record on 7q) to 1080p in a7 menu I get nothing. If I plug it into a tv that shows signal it's detected as 1080p and shown and shows 1080i signal when I switch.

i assume there will be a bunch of prosumer cameras at nab outputting clean 1080p60 over hdmi. Can the 7q record this

This sounds great Mitch. What will be next up? I'm hoping for 1) 4K @ 4:2:2 10bit-compressed up to 60fps and 2) 4K2HD up to 60fps.

That would be the dream at least :) Thanks again

I would consider those to be new functions, not patches.

An example of a patch would be fixing something like issues with playback.
