Odyssey7Q April 2014 Firmware Update

Hi Mitch,

I plan on ending up with quite a few Odysseys basically- 3 for cameras and 1 multicast director monitor. What would be really useful and to save some $ would be a quad split monitor without the record functions, for general viewing or specifically for focus pulling or remote gimbal operation where you really don't need the recording capability. I know there are other cheaper solutions, but love that OLED.

Also please, please, please (thank you James Brown) let us, i.e. me, know what the gh4/sony7s upgrade will be- availablity/cost. You guys are losing a jump if you don't get it out soon. A7s is in a friends hand as I write this and gh4 is in mine.

I really need to start on my CDesign super system but will not until I know the facts. And just to be annoying P,P,P finish up on the promised c500 functions. I love the combo, but it is getting very frustrating to have to use other solutions for what the C500 is capable of.

THX for the 1138th time
The horsepower needed within the unit to accept and display 4x HD signals is as much as a recorder variant, so there's really no way we could offer a stripped down unit below the 7Q. MultiStream monitoring for only $2295 -- it's already a heck of a deal!

Believe me, as soon as we get it sorted out I will be drafting up information on cameras like A7S & GH4. We are VERY aware.

C500 expanded support is coming! I just got some promising comments from one of our engineers.

the odyssey shines with RAW and CD offers most of the frame rates in RAW since its release. all the extra compressed codecs is nice and all but technically CD is delivering an amazing product for its price right now. 4k at 120fps is hopefully around the corner. but i totally understand why you guys want the precision scaled compressed codecs.

Thanks,
Chris

I agree. 120fps would be great! I'll bet if the compressed codec came first the argument would be "we need RAW!!!" Mitch has a been more than accommodating, through his postings Its obvious he wants it to happen just as much as the rest of us. We just all need to be a little more patient, it'll happen soon enough. Thanks

I disagree. We were told that RAW wasn't an option from the beginning. I'm sure there would have been "would be nice to get RAW ;)" messages, but as far as many were concerned it was off the table because Sony was holding onto that for their first-party recorder.

Don't get me wrong, it was an awesome surprise. I love the image out of this thing. But we've got an awkward little situation where we are being told to be grateful for this awesome capability we didn't know but left without a capability that was actually promised from the beginning. Like I said in a past message, we were given cake when we were promised bread & butter. But for a lot of us, nothing but cake is a little too much to handle.

"C500 expanded support is coming! I just got some promising comments from one of our engineers"

You are a hell of a tease.

Mitch,

I own the 7Q for the FS700 and am generally happy with your progress, and definitely with your communication.

I'm writing to lobby for "no additional cost for the A7s." After all , the Sony option is that: "the Sony option". I think a lot of FS700 users will also purchase the A7s. And (the key point): we will only be able to run one device at a time. I wouldn't want to have to pay for an additional piece of software. Some of us may buy two or more 7Qs. I would, however, be okay with "full price for FS700 users, which includes A7s use, and lower price for "A7s only."

The current hardware does not support 4K over HDMI, or 108o/60p over HDMI. To support these means a hardware change. While we are working to determine the best solution and the fairest way to implement it for our clients, if it physically costs us money to do so then we cannot give it away for free.

Also please note that there is no "A7S" solution. That camera exports 4K video. So does the GH4 as do other cameras. So as soon as we have a compressed 4K recording solution implemented, the recording of such signals will require no record option to be purchased or rented. A record option refers to accessing a proprietary signal forom a specific camera or manufacturer. That is not the case here.

So this is a change in the camera itself, or some kind of box between the camera and the 7Q? Or is this uncertain at this time?

Thanks.
Jim

after the experience of promised and paid in advance FS700 features I dont see the A7s/G4 + 7Q combo coming in a realistic time frame. But even if it should happen in time and you would use the A7s as a B-cam, would you buy a second 7Q for the B-cam? I see the Shogun far more soon in the shelf and as a cheaper option also for the new 4K devices.

For some reason my gut tells me an update could happen any day now. Is my gut wrong? I often think it's a bit too large, i need to work on that. But, i hope it's not wrong!

Well it probably has to do with being teased that updates were looking to be more "monthly"... about three months ago.

Best intentions. We thought we'd have certain issues licked a long time ago but some issues have been difficult to nail down. I'm told we're almost to the finish line, but I've been told similar things before.

Hopefully the finish line is soon. I've got a shoot in late July that would be awfully nice to have either 1080p60 ProRes or compressed 4K (up to 60p would be a cherry on top for compressed 4K)... Are any new features coming in this firmware update?

compressed 4K

As said before if you review the correlation of firmware and feature announcement and realization I would not expect 4K ProRes before October. If you need compressed 4K I'd recommend to search in time for another solution.
