Odyssey7Q+, and support for Odyssey7Q

I think this is a brilliant upgrade plan. CD has done far more than other companies regularly do. They didn't need to offer ANY loyalty incentives really. They put some real effort into lowering the cost to their existing customers and maintaining the value of your current 7Qs. (if you care about such things)

If you think you'll have trouble selling your 7Q w/FS700RAW unlock for $1300-1500, you're crazy. That's literally HALF price over buying new! There are many people who want the 7Q and just can't do the $3K.

Personally, all my cameras are SDI. I can't see myself buying an (HDMI only) 4K camera in the next 2-3 years, so I'm not bothered. If you're a GH4 or A7S shooter, you'd be crazy not to jump all over this! Depending on your market, you could even be making money.

How does that work?

O7Q+ is 2295, you buy one of those. You sell your O7Q for $1500. Your upgrade just cost $800 for HDMI 1.4?

Am i missing something?

I hasten to add i'm not moaning about it but it's a lot of money for not a lot, unless there's more to the + model.

nope. "The GH4 is also capable of producing 4K 4:2:2 10bit output via HDMI 1.4."

But HDMI 1.4 doesn't support that standard? I know it does 10bit at lower resolutions but at 4K.

cheers
Paul

that statement was from an online review of the camera. Can't find any statement from Panasonic about wether it's 1.4 or 2.0. It's literally all I could find on the subject after 10 min of searching. (not interested in spending any more time on it ;) )

The 7Q+ is $2300. However, you don't need to pay for the FS700 option (if you already have for your current 7Q) so you're saving that $800. You get $500 CD webstore credit. You can argue the value of that, but it's still $500. Dropping your investment to $1800 for a 7Q+ w/FS700RAW option. Depending where you live, I think you could sell your 7Q w/SonyRAW for upwards of $2K. That's still just a bit over a $1000 off buying a new unit and you get an extra year warranty. That's a good deal for anyone.

Even if you can't sell it for that much, CD/s plan is providing you with an option to upgrade your existing unit to 4K HDMI for $300-500.

my guess is that we see quite soon new features and framerates on the 7Q+ which will not be available for the 7Q due to hardware limitations.

Mitch Gross has stated in another thread that the 7Q+ has the same chip as the 7Q, and therefore no hardware limitations on the latter.

Please se correct me if I misunderstood =Z

I think the same. Could be more transparent for us if we know the hardware inside between the 2 versions. Not only hdmi.
Remember when the price droped for a limit time, thats Mitch said, its a fantastic non sense marketing.

he is a marketing guy and he has stated a lot as its his business. That does not mean that you will see all what he stated on your device soon.

Clermond, it's true. Mitch is a PR person.

Im im not suggesting that anyone should or shouldn't be expecting any features.

Speculations on future firmware roadmaps are much more subject to error than statements on current hardware. With that said, it's entirely possible that Mitch's statement was a type of "marketing speech" meant to mislead 7Q users into passively accepting the release of the 7Q+. I cannot comment on his intention, but his statement does give the impression that both units will be capable of similar processing features outside of the HdMI limitation.

If indeed both units have the same processing unit, CD may still decide to cripple the 7Q as a business decision to encourage users to buy the 7Q+.

Again, I'm not suggesting one or the other, just thought I'd add this tithe conversation :)

U'r nuts to think CD would cripple the 7Q. As soon as the shelf stock is exhausted, no more 7Q's. There's no other reason to debilitate the 7Q. Only Sony would do something like that.

Well, to be honest, i actually find it disturbingly possible that they indeed have upgraded something other than HDMI inside the O7Q+.

I could certainly find this feasible. I suspect the HDMI module is an LRU that plugs into the O7Q mother board. And that's what was updated, together with firmware to process the new HDMI LRU....possibly even a change in the motherboard circuits. The other changes would involve more RAM or a faster processor, all of which it wold make no sense for C-D not to advertize the improvements.

I asked this on the official thread, but this one is more active.

With the new firmware, is there any reason an existing Odyssey shouldn't be able to record 4k from the A7s through an HDMI to SDI converter?

I'm sorry Cuervo. What I was trying to convey was two things: that 7Q and 7Q+, according to Mitch, have the same type of processor so that suggests that they might be capable of the same things. And second, as a response to clermond who suggested that the 7Q may not get certain newer features because of processing power, that because both units are reported to have the same type of processor, any "crippling" of the 7Q may be more of a business decision.

As per my last quote, I won't speculate what is what...and why. I just wanted to complement this thread with the addition of Mitch's statement about the similarities between both models. In no way am I suggesting that indeed CD will cripple the 7Q. As an owner of the 7Q, I certainly hope they don't.

Remember 3-4 months ago when we had the discussion about the 7Q+ unit?

It was completely denied.

So i dont really trust Mitch anymore, thats my problem. Selling all of it and getting FS7 with 10bit internal seems much more needed now than a week ago.

As someone who would like to buy a 7Q for my newly acquired FS700, I'm not sure what to do now: get the new one and maximize future compatibility or buy the outdated one for potentially cheap price but limit future choices? I'm leaning towards buying the older one if we take Mitch's statements at face value but I'm not sure how we confirm it.

well, you have a valid point.

In general from my Convergent experience: buy only what you get now for your current needs. Resist to the temptation to factor C-D's announcements and plans of future features into your decision what to buy. You will never know if they will realize all of them. And if so you never know when so they might be caught up buy features other camera manufacturers.

And be sure C-D will have a bunch of excuses for changing their plans, alterations and (months of) delay.

If you want something rock-solid future proof for compressed recording of 4K/UHD 50p/60p, either Odyssey7Q nor Odyssey7Q+ are capable to solve that for sure. If Convergent Design is able to speed up their Firmware and stabilize power consumption, it's very likely that both products will be able to record that the same way and quality.

But you need to feed that signal in. This is a different matter.

Hardware limitation is something, you can rely on. It's for sure, their HDMI 1.x input connectors wont't be able to accept that signal. You need quad HD-SDI to feed the device, if there are no special paths like Sony's compressed FS RAW feed.

We have been discussing market demand of an updated version some months ago and you should be aware, that some of the expected hardware features are not part of Odyssey7Q+. I would not be surprised if the lifetime cycle of this product is even shorter than Odyssey7Q's.

There is no pressure coming from our little community, here, or from Mitch's wishful thinking. It's coming from the market, from additional 4K camera types.
