Odyssey7Q+, and support for Odyssey7Q

Sad I was right and that it's such a small upgrade, no SDI or panel upgrade? Too bad I wasn't right about the upgrade path, which would've been a lot less work. I guess CD is trying to compensate some users for their hardship with free software licenses, which is something I suppose. And new hardware to buy when we are still waiting on a lot of software features for our now EOL hardware sounds like a bit of an insult. It will be a pain to have two nearly identical models floating around and its certainly a bit of a pain to have to find a way to sell my EOL 7Q to pay for my purchase of a new 7Q+, to have to find a buyer willing to pay the extra for the FS RAW license... CD credits sound a bit useless to most people since you cant buy SSDs with them and I never buy extended warranties anyway and most software upgrade rentals will be paid by clients/productions and it might be odd to get reimbursed for a store credit.

From 10/7/14 regarding the 7Q price drop:
Interesting, now what are the chances that CD is doing this because thy are going to be releasing a 7Qv2 as soon as they sell all the old units? Perhaps they're clearing out old stock to make room for the new upgraded hardware that has 4K HDMI and 12G SDI and a 1080p (or UHD??) panel? Perhaps v1 owners will have the option of sending theirs in for an upgrade at a cost? I've seen other manufacturers do this... Sorry shouldn't be speculating but it's hard not to :P
And what if we just decided to have a sale to promote our product? Other companies have done that, have they not?

Seems like maybe a little misdirecting going on there...

Mitch is this the 'solution' for 4K via HDMI for current 7Q owners you talked about a couple of months ago?
Yes.

The more we tried various designs and plans, the more we came to realize that this was really the only viable option. Any add-on unit would have proven to be much more expensive than any of you would like, and it would involve a kludgy mounting, additional power, added weight, and some potential technical pitfalls.

At the same time, we determined that retrofitting an Odyssey7Q to become a 7Q+ would not be a realistic option either. It would essentially be replacing the entire unit and then testing it. This would also entail shipping costs, import/export issues for our overseas clients (potential major fees), and long delays where clients would be without their monitor/recorders.

In the end it is less expensive and less hassle for you to simply buy a new Odyssey7Q+ and sell your Odyssey7Q. To help sweeten the value of the 7Q on the used market, we're adding the 1 year warranty extension plus keeping the record options on the units. If you sell it for only $1295 (the price of a new Odyssey7, which cannot do so much of what the Odyssey7Q can do), then you have only paid $1000 for the Odyssey7Q+ and you also have $500 sitting in your CD website account for future use.

We are honestly trying to give the best deal we realistically can offer. We struggled long & hard with this one.

and a $500 credit to their account on the Convergent Design website. Details on the program will be posted soon.QUOTE said:
So wait...can I use that $500 credit to buy a 7q+ as a 7q owner? and if so is that offer an 'international' one?
This is a $500 credit on the Convergent Design website store. Currently available on that store are Record Option purchases and rentals. Warranty extensions will soon be offered and there will be other values in the future, such as the Multi-Stream Recording option. It is not for the purchase of the Odyssey7Q+, which must be done directly with your local dealer.

I'd be rather stoked about Firmware Updates instead of Product Updates.

I personally don't bother about 4K via HDMI, but promising a "solution" to others who have a need for it is just utterly dissapointing. Solution? Where is this a solution for 7Q owners?

No disappointment for me, but for many others i suppose.

Yes.

For me, it is very hard to sell the 7Q in my country, rarely people here will buy those camera supported with 7Q and not all the camera user will buy additional recorder for their camera as well. So for me it is likely impossible to sell mine but only have a choice to buy another one just for my a7s use? I was been told and keep see the confirmation saying 7Q will support Sony A7s, after say need additional unit, now you need buy a completely new 7Q+ to make it work. Why don't just give a trade in/upgrade? i think it is not hard to switch to HDMI port and some hardware to get it done? I don't see big upgrade on the new 7Q+ as well, like more powerful processor to convert raw to prores slow motion go to higher frame rates in 2k and 4k. So spending so much again just for one main upgrade make no sense especially for the old customer that waiting for 4k support via hdmi. Still, we still not sure how much and how well sony a7s being support by 7Q+, the slog2 recorded in 7Q+ are in correct/true slog2 profile? any additional features for Sony a7s beside record 4k only, like timelapse? Giving the offer till march im afraid people still can't see the clear benefit on getting another new recorder to use. Sorry to say that, a company that make a mistake in announcement before still want earn more money by selling new device for customer that already bought will just making yourself lose more customer in future. If you just give old customer a good trade in/upgrade plan, you will lose just a bit money this time, but you earn their heart and they will keep support and buy your product in future. I hope convergent design can reconsider again before 7Q+ shipped out. Anyway, is all your choice.

Mitch,

I did ask previously on the official thread but this one seems to have become more active.

Beyond that HDMI capability are there any other changes to the O7Q+ that are significant? Or will become more significant in the future? Is it conceivable that future firmware may target O7Q+ only?

HDMI 1.4 only supports 8 bit at these resolutions, it's HDMI 2.0 that supports 10 and 12 bit. IMHO 1.4 seems an industry stop gap, i can't see it lasting for any real professional use (even on the AV side). So i'd be a bit concerned that the O7Q+ might also be a bit of a stopgap until 2.0 is around. Of course no cameras are outputting 2.0 AFAIK and the O7Q+ is more than just an HDMI recorder.

On that basis it's quite difficult to see why i would upgrade based on that function alone (even though i have an A7s) although it is tempting... Not sure what the second hand value is over here.

IMHO I would have much preferred to see a small CD conversion box between 1.4 and something we can record on the O7Q.

cheers
Paul

It's laughable to assume you can go out and instantly sell your 7Q for $1295 as if there' an huge used market out there - there ain't. Selling stuff is hassle, end of. As far as engendering loyalty, hmmm that's a two way street. What's to stop you flogging your 7Q and buying a Shogun and before anyone says where's the Shogun & how come it hasn't shipped yet, well just maybe they want it to ship with all it's promised functionality and not on a never ending promise. Ultimately, at this point I'm quite happy using my FGS700/ 7Q combo. I would like to see 4K Pro Res and Pro Res HFRs as promised, then for me, it's pretty much a complete unit. I have to say I would feel very hard done by if all of a sudden firmware updates only came out for the + and the 7Q went the way of other CD products, without completing it's journey. Just saying.

Well I was very excited about what the offer first seemed to be, duplication of paid for software, warranty extension, and 500 credit. Now that the $500 credit only applies to software or warranty extension, the bitter taste is coming back, especially since the 4k pro res for Canon for the 7q will not be available until the 7q+ is released. It sucks big that so much promised came so late or never. And the corker for me is no 10bit for gh4. I was already to jump on a big purchase of more CD units, but now will wait to see what Atmos really does. If CD was serious about appeasing C500 owners it would be in the form of using the $500 credit as $500 back on the 1500 that we paid for upgraded software and did not totally receive.

Not wanting to hijack but according to the spec for HDMI 1.4 at 4K resolutions it's only 8 bit. Has anyone actually confirmed that the GH4 is outputting 10bit at 4K, perhaps it moves down to 8bit when doing 4K?

cheers

I thought the Odyssey 7Q already has 4K Pro Res? Am I mistaken?

What is the Shogun? 10bit 4k?

Cheers

Pretty sure gh4 is only 10b over SDI from the YAGH

But over SDI ther is PRO RES 4k, right?

Well on the specs of B&H the SHogun is listed as UHD 10-bit.

If 10-bit UHD is possible then it'd be a bit dumb of CD not to integrate it...then there must be an Odeyssey 7Q++ ;)
