Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

Keep all the ideas coming! I will say that some of these are in fact ideas we've considered as well. Who knows, maybe in the end you'll all be correct!

I'd like to be able to take out the SSDs between takes and see it make English muffins. The kind with the big nooks and crannies that the butter get's in. That would be nice on set in the morning, right?

I LOVE THE ODYSSEY 7q - a beautiful piece of gear!
what do you recommend as a screen protector for it?
also as a soft case?

and finally - any update on ETA on Pro Res and or DNX HD recording?

thanks

Hmm another random guess: a device that allows the 7Q to communicate over 11ac and gigE networks and sync the SSD automatically to networked storage... and/or host a live video stream(s) for compressed distributed viewing on set.

There is a screen protector already installed on the Odyssey. A replacement one is $35 list price via any of our dealers. It is made for us by ProK Solutions.

For other updates please see my next post.

December Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

Our Current Delivery Forecast
The Odyssey7Q began deliveries in October 2013.
Odyssey7Qs ordered before October 2013 are forecast for delivery by January 30, 2014.
Odyssey7Qs ordered before December 18, 2013, are forecast for delivery by February 28, 2014.

The Odyssey7 is forecast to begin delivery by March 31, 2014, or earlier. Odyssey7s ordered before December 18, 2013, are forecast for delivery by April 15, 2014.

Firmware
A firmware update for the Odyssey7Q is expected in mid-January 2014. In addition to addressing several minor adjustments, this update will allow the mixing of Raided and non-Raided files onto the SSDs. When shooting at high frame rates in certain formats, the files need to be striped across both SSDs in order to keep up with the data rate. Now it will be possible to switch between high frame rates requiring two SSDs to slower frame rates requiring only a single drive without the need to swap out the SSDs.

Another firmware update is planned for February 15[SUP]th[/SUP], 2014. This firmware update adds a popular compressed codec, audio level meters, and other improvements. More information will be made available as this free firmware update is prepared.

SSD Availability
Odyssey SSDs in both 256 GB and 512 GB sizes are in stock and available in large quantities.

Accessories
There are a few changes in the available accessories for the Odyssey7 & 7Q.

All cables will now be delivered in a uniform 36” (0.9 meter) length. This includes the four power cables and the ultra-thin HD-SDI 3G cable. Custom lengths are available on special order.
The Odyssey Battery Plate for Sony L-Series batteries has proven quite popular. Now there are versions of this plate that accept Sony L-Series, Sony U-series, Canon BP-9xx series, Panasonic CGA series, and JVC batteries.

The Convergent Design Odyssey battery and its charger are now End of Life. The Odyssey Battery Plates are suggested as cost effective solutions.

There are two standard replacement parts for the Odyssey7 & 7Q. The power supply (CD-OD-AC-PS) is the same unit that is shipped with either product. The CD-OD-SP is a stick-on / peel-off screen protector that is end-user replaceable. The Odyssey7 and 7Q ship with this screen protector already installed.

The Odyssey7 and 7Q Case and Sun hood will be available in the future.

More accessories are in development and information will be made available soon.

Hmm so sounds like the Q4 2013 firmware is pushed until Q1 2014 or at least 1.5 months, so does that mean the old Q1 2014 update that includes fs700 improvements is also pushed at least 1.5months or about 1 quarter?

.

Thanks for the update. That's pretty disappointing. It's taking that long to implement Compressed codecs? I really thought we were going to see them soon as was originally planned in the roadmap. Damn, well I guess it's time to shell out some more dollars and get another recorder for a while.

Is this user error or a problem?

Is this user error or a problem?

So I got my 7Q just Yesterday, and my preliminary tests went well. Today I wanted to experiment with two inputs. I had an hdmi and an sdi source. I could see that the hdmi input seems to be mapped to sdi one. So the first thing I did was hook the sdi cable to input B. Nothing, nada 7Q says no video input. If I remove that cable from sdi b and put it on sdi a I get a picture. Is this user error, do I have to use A, first then B etc. or is there a setting I missed, or do I have a defective unit?

Thanks,
Chuck

The first firmware update will include some FS700 improvements, such as the fix for the image tearing sometimes seen on the monitor (but not in the recording) when shooting in 2K RAW.

We wish they were ready now as well. This stuff really is complicated and we want to do it right. No one hands you the code and says "just plug it in." You are given some specs and basically have to do it all yourself. So that's where we are. We have versions that function, but they are not yet ready for the certification process and therefore not yet ready for release. As soon as we can, we will.

I don't think there's anything wrong with your unit. The Odyssey7Q will always look to SDI 1 IN first. Currently, the Multi Stream viewing is only for the SDI inputs. In a future firmware upgrade we will include the HDMI input as one of the optional inputs. The only way to see more than one signal is to be in Multi Stream mode. If you plug into the HDMI input, it will overide the other inputs and become the signal you view by default. To see an input over the SDI 1 IN, you must disconnect the HDMI in.

Thanks, Mitch that makes sense and is consistent with the behavior I saw. Ah.... I think I have an hdmi to sdi converter so I can take my hdmi source and convert it to sdi and then I can do a legitimate 2 input test.

So I guess you know that in multistream mode if sdi1 input gets disconnected it disables the other inputs... it's understandable but not a great behavior for multicam setups where cameras may move and have to disconnect periodically, it also blanks the whole screen any time any input is connected/disconnected. Is this something that will be fixed or is it the nature of how the unit has to work? That said, multistream monitoring is already super useful!

So, the tearing that I am seeing at the top of the screen is only on the screen? It is pretty bad and I do see it on playback. I have not been able to download any footage because I do not have a reader yet. It is there at all times at all rates of panning. I have been pretty disturbed and disappointed by this since firing up my O7Q yesterday.

We're working on addressing this.

Correct, it is not in the recorded files. We've already worked out the fix for this so I know that it will definitely be implemented in the next firmware release.

So just to confirm: No 4K recording until February 15th at the earliest andin all probability (given previous roadmap changes) later?
