Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

Yes, we have had some delays. A revised update will go out this week. I can tell you that we do expect all Odyssey7Qs ordered before we began shipping in October to be delivered in January.

Will the update have any info about the firmware release? Just wondering if it's a bug fix update or contains feature updates.

Yes, there will be some information in that regard. When we send it out I will also post it to this forum.

How meta - I'm posting updates about posting updates.

Hey Mitch, I apologize if this has been asked and answered before, but would it be possible for Convergent Design to release an update roadmap similar to how Sony did with the F5/F55/FS700? Broad ranges are more than welcome. As a former software engineer, I know that I despised public roadmaps as it frequently seemed to create arbitrary and sometimes impossible deadlines. You've done such an amazing job at keeping us updated, but I ask in hopes that the community can also shoulder some of the workload of answering some questions and hopefully allow you to not have to repeat yourself too often :)

Here is Convergent Design's release schedule (yet another meta- released Oct 2013):

This month, compressed recording should be available.
The "Popular Codec" unveiled!

Sony FS700 4K-Recording is scheduled for Q1.2014.
I hope, there is no delay.
The above was a part of our October Status Update. Our December Status Update, which has a few revisions to that roadmap expected, will be made available soon.

Hi Mitch,

Do you have any idea when you're likely to fulfil all the pre-orders? Before the latest round of production delays you had said by end of December. I'm assuming it'll be mid January now. I ask because my supplier only received 2 units in the last delivery (1st to the UK by the sounds of it!) and I'm number six on the list, so I'm guessing I have a bit of a wait ahead of me :(

Mine came in from Proactive this week, and speaking to them they only received 2. I do think that some other UK suppliers have got theirs in earlier though, might be worth asking around to see if anyone has a short preorder list.

Im number 2 on preorder list in germany at biggest reseller Bandpro, preordered in june. They dont know anything about when they will receive the units and they seem to be very frustrated about it also.
Funny thing is ... just found out about someone who bought from a german reseller that is not even on the CD dealer list and he got a unit this week .... ! Seems like "preorder" has no value anymore.

Preorders very much do have a value, but you also don't want one big company to preorder 1000 units and stop everyone else from selling. So these things must be considered and mitigated. Convergent Design has a distributor for our European dealers, so much of the process is handled by the distributor in that market.

Believe me when I say that we try very hard to be fair and equitable.

How awesome is it that a representative of the company is active posting here, to keep potential customers abreast of what's going on? I would feel 100% comfortable giving this company my business (unfortunately I don't have a need for their product at this time). Props to Convergent for being completely open & honest. I hope their attitude leads to huge success!

Dave

FWIW i got mine today (perhaps one of the two that Colin mentions). Looks great, but no time to actually turn it on today. Tomorrow hopefully. Of course now i'm chomping at the bit for firmware updates and 4K ... sounds of drumming fingers...

very happy to see it finally.

cheers
Paul

One sure way to success would be if the production numbers will be increased. If CD is just able to output several dozens units for global delivery, that would worry me. Such small drops of water in the ocean. Revenue 2k USD a unit, how could they pay Dan, Mitch and the rest of their team?

If there is another major delay, caused by missing parts or other reasons, this may open an opportunity to reconsider the hardware. Both odyssey models seem to be state-of-2013 and large numbers might get manufactured next year. I guess HDMI 2.0 and 6G-SDI will be state-of-the art, soon. I would expect several new 4K-equipment on the upcoming NAB Show 2014, using these standards. So may be we have outdated units, when our wave hits the beach.

One would hope, at least going on the sales pitch from C-D, that the O7Q has sufficient memory and processing power to have its firmware updated for just about any 4k contingency.
DISCLAIMER: I do not work for C-D.

It's a brand new product, so they'll ramp up production as the units roll out and they feel comfortable. It would be worse if they cranked up to making thousands of units then realized something was wrong and had to replace them. Measure twice, cut once. They sell other products that are generating revenue for them. And they aren't just making 2K per item, they are selling the SSDs (I spent $1200 on SSDs for my 7Q) and cables, batteries, etc. I'm sure they know their costs of doing business, this isn't their first rodeo.

As far as it being outdated, anything announced at 2014's NAB could still be months down the line for release, just like the 7Q was when it was announced. Don't call a product that is actually OUT on the market "outdated" when the product that is "outdating" it isn't even available yet. Hell, people called the FS700 outdated when the Black Magic 4K cam was announced... here we are 8 months later with no Black Magic 4K camera released. Even when the FS700 first came out people on forums went bonkers over the BMCC and how it was such a better camera (that wasn't even out yet!). I don't know about you, but I'll take a real camera I can shoot with today over a sheet of paper with specs for a camera I MIGHT be able to shoot with next year.

The Odyssey7Q has a lot of tricks up its sleeves that we have not yet revealed. Convergent Design products are not designed to be "this year's" product. We make devices for the long haul that are expected to be useful tools for our clients for years. We strongly believe that this is the way to best serve the community and grow as a company. Building the better mousetrap, as they say.

A few things slowed down our initial production. When the products were first announced, the response was overwhelming. A lot of serious clients asked for very specific functionality, and we had to sort out what made the most sense to implement and with what priority. It's all a lot of code to write and test. We built a few units by hand to test things out, and of course we learn every step of the way. They we had our board stuffer (a facility with a programmed machine that physically sticks each resistor and capacitor onto the circuit board and then solders the whole thing together) run off a few test samples so that we could be sure the automated production process didn't have any hiccups. Trust me, you don't want to run off 500 circuit boards before discovering a problem with a trace. Finally once we had torture tested those boards we could move into volume production. But who knew our supplier would pick that moment to run out of BNC connectors? We ordered more than 10,000 of them (yes, more than ten thousand BNC connectors!), but apparently that proverbial slow boat from China was a little extra slow. But now we are chugging away and producing Odysseys in large quantities on a steady basis. It's just that we have SO MANY on backorder that it takes us a bit to catch up. They are coming out of the factory in a stream, not a trickle. But we also send them to dealers and distributors all over the world, and you're not hearing from those clients on this forum. No one here reporting from China, India or Japan, right?

I appreciate your concern for Convergent Design. We are gettin' it done and we have more tricks in our bag. The Odyssey7Q and Odyssey7 have long lives ahead of them. Look for some fun announcements soon, and some surprises come early April that should make y'all happy! ;-)

Blimey, that's a very long time to look at an unopened present! Any hints, or are you just going to tease us until late March?!
OK here's a hint: We will introduce a product that will NOT obsolete the Odyssey7 or Odyssey7Q. In fact, we believe that most Odyssey owners as well as a lot of other people will want to own this.

Have fun with that one!! :-D
