Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

Mitch, one thing I love about small hd are their well made battery plates, and the sunshade quality and the way it attaches. I heard someone mention the Oddessy sunhood isn't so good. Can you comment, this is super important, I hate fumbling with poorly designed/attached sunshades

Really? I find SmallHD batteries battery plates and sunshades annoying... Except for the AB plate, they all have spots for two batteries which I suppose some people may find handy, but I find it annoying since I'd never mount two batteries for weight and since the plate covers the whole back it is difficult to velcro other stuff to the monitor such as wireless receivers, splitters, etc. Frankly I find camera batteries annoying for monitors in general since they destroy the form factor by being very long and narrow, when a large thin battery the size of the back of the monitor would be ideal for maintaining its slim form factor and balance. And the sunshade is nice in that it packs up small because it's made of fabric but it's a bit annoying to install and cannot be used at all if anything obstructs its large footprint. I mostly just cut my own coroplast hoods and attach them with velcro since I find that the most flexible.

IMO SmallHD hoods are total awesomeness - they work and pack down small, if they don't have a patent Id copy them!

Batts, always a hard one, vlock are big, and anything onboard is unreliable..

I use the canon battery plate, super light and slim, lasts for hours. I don't mount splitters, transmitters or anything else on the monitor, so the sunhood never hits anything. In my opinion, you won't find a better implemented sunshade solution than small hd's. Seems like the Odyssey could have made something great easily. And c'mon Mitch, Velcro the battery? Really!?
This certainly doesn't fit with the rest of the Odyssey's Pro features/look. Seems super weird.

There's nothing wrong with Velcro. I have an Eclair ACL Super 16mm made in the 1970's and that's the only way to get the batteries to stick to the camera. The batteries are huge and heavy, and it's never come off the velcro. Works perfect.

BTW Mitch, where is there a surface to velcro to on the 7Q? The back of the monitor has those ridges and unless I'm missing something, velcro usually works best on flat surfaces.

Hmm if CD's batteries don't add much extra value I may just continue to use the system I've been using for my other monitors, which is just these velcro'ed to the back:

(they have a level indicator which is nice to have when charging and managing a bunch of them)

Any idea where I can get a 7Q power to 2.1mm DC barrel adapter/cable?

Hey Noah, I like your thinking here. Quick question, how many hours of power are you able to get out of your current monitors using these little batteries. Seems right up my alley and the price is right.

I believe Mitch said you can buy a 36" connector from CD with wired ends to attach your own DC barrel.

Looks like 4S Li-ion cylindrical cells in PVC shrink with no casing? Will the 7Q read the battery level? I suppose it will at least report the voltage, right?

I also have a couple $30 9800mah versions for when it's a handheld director's monitor that doesn't need to be light, just run all day.

Be our guest. We're entering into the battery world a bit reluctantly as we just want an inexpensive option for our clients.

We make a cable with a bare wire on one end so you can attach your own connector. It's CD-OD-FLYINGLEAD.

We weren't happy with the first pass on the sunshade, so ours is still in development. PortaBrace makes a nice weatherproof bag with integrated sunshade hood that also folds down to protect the screen. We'll get our sunshade out soon and we'll do our best to make it nice for you.

Like I said, this is a "cheap & for now" solution. We are working on some other nifty stuff but wanted something available right away.

Even with the fins on the back of the Odyssey, the battery is so lightweight that Velcro does the job.

hmmmm....makes me wonder why those "fins" were designed in. They look like heat dissipation fins. If this is the case, isn't obstructing their ability to reject heat not a good thing? One of the battery holders I've seen here completely blocks those fins(from Oceanvideo).....worrisome, at best, disastrous at worst.

No one makes one? I have had bad luck with making my own cables :P

How do we buy this cable? I see you gave the item number but googling it returns nothing, the search on Convergent Design comes up with nothing. I'd like to get one of these cables early since it sounds like the other option boxed with the 7Q is a wall adapter.

I totally agree. It is the best sunshade I have ever used. Works great even in full sunshine.

It is going to be interesting to see how people access the touch screen of the 7Q with a sunscreen on. If you try controlling it from your cell phone or tablet outside in the sun, that looks like a problem also.

I believe Olof @ Westside AV is going to carry the CD-OD-FLYINGLEAD and I believe he can do Custom cables, so maybe he can professionally marry the cable to a DC end.

Westside A V will have those cables as soon as they ship from CD.

We also have a really sturdy Odyssey mounting kit in stock now. I will post photos here soon, with pricing on the mounting kit as well as pricing on Power cables (D-tap, or custom plugs like Swit) and SMTE 424 (3G) BNC cables and 90 degree adapters.

We are also working on a Hood that allows touch screen to be accessed.

PM or email me if you have ??? or special requests.

Oh interesting I hadn't even thought of the implications of a hood on touchscreen operation...

Then again i usually just use DIY coroplast hoods that only cover 3 sides so I'd think as long as the bottom side is open you can get your hand in there.

Wait are there no buttons at all that we could program for toggling focus and waveform for example with a hood on? I hate 3-sided hoods.

The fins are there to dissipate heat, but Ocean Video and Nebtek have both shown us their plate designs and there is no issue. Their aluminum plates themselves will help dissipate the heat and they also have numerous holes to allow air channeling. It is not an issue.
