Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

Thanks again Mitch. So if I understand your wording correct. This means we can record 120fps RAW using a single SSD? And awesome you guys are working on a compressed version as well. It would be nice to be able to record 240fps in a 4:2:2 Codec with excellent image quality and not the crazy file sizes.
Yes, only 2K RAW 200fps & 240FPS require two SSDs. These drives are insanely fast.

We can consider a buffer, but it takes up a huge chunk or memory. We're talking about high speed data here people. Not sure about how long we could make it.

Hey Mitch,

So when the Odyssey ships (next few days?) it will not ship with a compressed 10-bit 4:2:2 codec standard with the monitor? If not, any idea when this might happen?

Hi Mitch, what's the road map like for the 7Q Firmware Updates. On your site, it shows a legend of 1,2,3,4 beside the recording options (HD, 2K, 4K). I'm really interested in the 4k option, i guess my concern is that by the time its out then there would be so many other options available. Are the updates as per convergent design's discretion or sony's?

Hello Mitch,

Not really a question, more of a suggestion:

I'm really interested in the focus tools for the 7Q and 7, but I realised there was one I'd like that I don't think it does (yet!) but may not be too impossible for you to develop.

Basically I would LOVE to be able to tap on a section of the monitor and have that area blown up pixel to pixel across a square inch or so (with focus assist overlays as well, if that's doable). Then 'closed' again by tapping the magnified section again (and/or auto dissapearing after a few seconds).

I'm making this suggestion because I absolutely HATE the focus assist on the Red and C300, they're both terrible (and have got me in a bit of trouble with a-hole editors in the past), but I love the focus assist on the FS700 - specifically the ability to magnify a moveable section of the image.

Being a DP yourself, I'm sure you appreciate that we don't frame everything in the centre (or, indeed, hardly anything that is focus critical!), so having a focus assist that simply maginfies the centre of the frame is pretty useless about 80% of the time! Hence my hatred of the C300 and Epic (that and their edge enhacements are crappy too).

In fact the only issue I have with the FS700 system is that it is a bit slow and fiddly to move the expanded focus area to where I want it (especially when shooting docs) - If you could programme the 7Q to do it quickly and simple with a touch that'd make a huge difference to me.

I'm not sure if this is doable (I don't know if the whole screen is touch sensitive, or just the edges), but if it is, I think it'd be a great addition to the firmware.

Thanks

I can't seem to find a straight answer on this important question. Dan Keaton has suggested in an earlier thread that 2 SSD's must be formatted in Raid to capture the high frame rates.

Once formatted for this specific use, are we then able to also record normal frame rates like 24fps on these drives, or are they then "locked" to 200/240fps until formatted again?

What I can't seem to find a straight answer on is, if on a shoot that requires 240fps one take and 24fps the next, are we supposed to be swapping drives and MUST have a third SSD to change frame rates? Up until yesterday I had no doubts until someone mentioned the 3 drive requirement earlier in the thread. This seems like a really important piece of information to be sharing if true!

Here's what Mitch said in a previous post:

First off, what can be recorded to the SSDs. I'm just going to address the FS700 because I think that's all anyone in this particular forum seems to really care about right now.
In 2K RAW, shooting at 200fps and 240fps requires the recording be striped across two SSDs because the data rate is so high. At 240fps onto a pair of 512G SSDs, you get 20 min. of realtime recording. Played back at 24fps, it's 200 minutes.
As long as you are shooting in RAW you can mix and match your frame rates without having to change SSDs.
On initial release of the Odyssey7Q, if you change from shooting 2K RAW to HD video, then you will need to swap the SSDs.
In a firmware update in a month of so this will be changed so that you do not have to change the SSDs when switching between RAW and HD video.

Thanks Gene, I totally misinterpreted that the first time around. As long as you're shooting raw at any frame rate on initial release, 2 SSD's are fine. phew!

The roadmap will be released in a day or two. I'll be sure to post it here.

I totally get what you're saying, and almost this exact functionality was one of the first things I suggested when I joined Convergent Design. My idea actually goes beyond that, but let's see what we can make happen. For right now, it is the standard center cut pixel zoom but in a future free firmware update you will be able to scrub your finger around the image for magnification. There's more to it than that , but basically we will do what you are asking.

I can't recall if it was on this thread or another one, but I indicated that we would not be making our own battery solution. We have in fact changed our mind and will offer up a very basic little lithium Ion battery which can velcro to the back of the Odyssey and power it for 3-4 hours. It will be list price $135 and the charger is list at $65. Dedicated for use with the Odyssey.

Scheduled to happen before the end of the year.

Ahh I see, I thought this was supposed to be part of the base functionality of the monitor? So I'm guessing the "popular codec" is the one holding this feature up?

Great to hear about the focus adjustments and battery in the works though :)

Mitch, the battery that you mentioned.... will that be available right away, or is that coming later?

This is perfect for my needs. Will it be available soon?

Saw on Twitter that units are starting to go out. AbelCine still isn't sure of how many/when they are getting them, so they said rough ETA on mine (pre-ordered early July) will be fulfilled Dec/Jan. Hopefully that's a very conservative estimate and they get more units than expected!

The compressed recording will be a part of the basic functionality of the Odyssey7Q, just not available at first. When ready, it will be included in a free firmware update.

The batteries will ship in the next week or so. It's really basic stud, just have to tear away someone from assembling Odyssey7Qs. I will caution that they are incredibly basic units, and we simply attach them to the Odyssey with some Velcro. Not the most advanced product ever implemented by CD, but we wanted to provide an inexpensive option out of the gate. Not gonna win any design awards here.

Looks like 4S Li-ion cylindrical cells in PVC shrink with no casing? Will the 7Q read the battery level? I suppose it will at least report the voltage, right?

Hmm if CD's batteries don't add much extra value I may just continue to use the system I've been using for my other monitors, which is just these velcro'ed to the back:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/12V-Portabl..._Cell_Phone_PDA_Batteries&hash=item461417699e
(they have a level indicator which is nice to have when charging and managing a bunch of them)

I also have a couple $30 9800mah versions for when it's a handheld director's monitor that doesn't need to be light, just run all day.

Any idea where I can get a 7Q power to 2.1mm DC barrel adapter/cable?
