Odyssey 7q stopped working with certain batteries

I've had the Hawkwoods DV-7QS dual battery plate for a year now and can highly recommend it, never had a problem with it. No drop in screen brightness nor any other issues.

thanks for sharing your experience. Does this plate work also with only one battery? Does it work with two batteries from a different brand?

Olof is correct. The main issue we are finding here is a drop in voltage level. There may be plenty of amperage left in the battery, but the chemistry is only letting so much out at a time, hence the lower voltage. We have a cutoff below 6.5v, so when you start off with a 7.2v battery and then draw a lot of power it can get questionable quickly. The BPU batteries are 14.4v batteries, so it takes longer for the voltage to drop, even if the overall delivered power is the same. You're just more efficiently using the battery. Convergent Design also seems a U-series battery plate.

My problem was never the drop in voltage, just that the battery plate stopped working with the larger batteries. The single cell convergent battery plate did work perfectly fine for me before this. I even did a 12 hour day shooting in completely in 4k and it held up with no problems. Hopefully I can get a replacement for the convergent plate but a dual battery plate is definitely an option i will consider.

Thanks for the advice Essami. I'll definitely consider this if I can't get a replacement for the current Convergent Design one I have.

Hi Mitch, just to let you know. The retailer I purchased the Convergent design battery plate from (Prokit in the UK) that I have the problem with got in touch on Friday last week. They said they haven't heard anything back from you guys yet. If we are able to get the issue solved this week it would be greatly beneficial for me as I need to work a solution out fro shoots I have next week. many thanks, Paul

It only works with two batteries. I havent tested it with two brands but works fine with non sony batteries.

Your UK retailer is likely going through the European distributor Symbiosis for this. If you could ask someone at the retailer to alert me, forward me the email, etc., then I can try to assist.

Thanks Mitch. I appreciate your help. I heard back yesterday afternoon from the retailer. They said they spoke to your guys and that I would need to send the battery plate back to the USA for it to be tested and that it would take at least one week for me to get it back. The problem is I cant go a week without a battery plate as I have shoots booked in. Is there no way to get a replacement and then send the current faulty plate back? I'm going to have to fork out for a new plate otherwise as I won't have a free week to send it back until June when I get married. Thanks.

We don't have spare plates we can ship around as loaners, and it would be cost prohibitive to ship one across continents in order to test for a repair. A new plate is only $75 (US list) so it might be worth it to buy another and then shop this one back for us to check for repair under warranty. Whatever we fix or replace you can keep as a backup.

Just to note, our battery plate is a very simple affair. just some electrical contact that hardwire directly to a cable that plugs into the Odyssey. I have heard that there are some devices that have an issue with certain battery types and certain (other brand) battery mounts where the pins & sockets do not perfectly align or the depth is off for full contact. But this is not with our plate and not with Sony batteries, so I'm hard-pressed to identify what could be wrong here. That's why our only solution is to ask you to send it in for us to check. If it is a strange aspect to the behavior of your individual batteries then we may say your plate is fine but it still has a problem with your batteries.

I appreciate the update Mitch. I guess I will have to fork out for a new one, I guess I'm not too happy that I have paid for a battery plate that has failed in the first 8 months of owning it and that I now have to pay for a new one.

We do not know if your battery plate has indeed failed. We are happy to check it for you and repair/replace as needed. But we must first determine if the plate is indeed the problem.
