Odyssey 7Q Firmware 2.11.110

No, this is big news. Look at the words that I am typing.

4K ProRes coming very soon to the Odyssey7Q.

It's a big deal, and a big deal to FS700 users as well.

WOOT! Party time!

I'm excited to see the FS7 or whatever it's called, but that's one major advantage of the FS7Q over that camera and the F5/F55 is Pro-Res.

I'd definitely take Pro-Res over XAVC any day of the week as it's pretty much standard for the places I work for. From what I've read on the F5/F55 forum, XAVC compression isn't quite as clean as Pro-Res.

Ah - I believe he is referring to the use of the word "ProRes" and not "popular codec" - which implies that they have received the necessary certification from Apple.

Huh? Didn't they get certification months ago when they implemented HD Prores? I mean the 7Q says Prores in the menus, it's not like they couldn't say Prores in relation to the 7Q...

I guess unless there is a timeline of a couple days or weeks I must be missing something regarding why this is big news. I thought we've known for months that 4K prores was coming and that it was coming "soon". I'm sure now it's just sooner than it was before and it's hard to imagine it wouldn't be coming in the next few weeks given how Mitch and Dan have been talking about it the past few weeks and given that 7Q now actually have significant competition with Sony's new camera and the Atomos Shogun and Blackmagic's new cameras and already adding many flavors of 4k prores to their cameras...

But then again I also thought I knew what "soon" was in 2013 when they said 4k prores was coming Q1 2014...

I wish CD didn't have to be so cryptic. Just give us a timeline/roadmap like you did in the beginning, we know you won't stick to it exactly and we know it's annoying for you to feel like you might get a lot of criticism for missing deadlines, but on the internet if you aren't getting criticism you aren't participating enough in the conversation. As a customer I'd rather have more information and know what the goals are. Partly because I know no one ever beats engineering goals so I know updates will come on or after the set goal, but without any information I'm left hoping it comes tomorrow and I have less information to make my decisions based on, which is worse for me.

Mitch, i would like to ask will compressed raw file(smaller file size like fs700 sony recorder) for fs700 release in future? Sometime i still prefer using raw file rather than prores(4k2hd) if i have times to do the editing. i found that the 4k2hd mode is more noiser than raw file if i'm not mistaken. The uncompressed raw file size is incredible big, so hoping there is smaller one can be recorded.

I know this isn't perhaps the right thread but what did Juan Martinez say about upcoming firmware update for FS700. When's it coming? (At the event).

Noah, when is the last time you saw an employee of Convergent Design put "4K" and "ProRes" together publicly? As opposed to 4K compressed or 4K popular compressed codec, etc?

As for giving timelines, while I'm glad to hear that you say you are comfortable knowing how to read between the lines and that such timelines are not absolutes, it is quite obvious that this is not the case with a great number of people both on this forum and off.

I had to leave early to catch a flight to Amsterdam for IBC so missed Juan's formal statement at the end, but I believe his general gist was similar to mine in stating, "Look for some announcements at the start of IBC, the morning of Friday the 12th."

Thanks for the clarification. I guess I hadn't been keeping track, I didn't realize the popular codec vs prores hurdle was something that had to be passed for every size and flavor, seems so crazy. Is the reason no other manufacturers do that because they just don't talk about prores at all before certification? I guess there aren't too many upgradeable HD + 4k prores recorders that had to deal with it?

Juan Martinez mentioned a new firmware coming out in a few days that would add support for the Sony 18-105 f4 lens that would correct lens distortions in real time at up to 60fps. Curious if it works for buffered 240fps as well since maybe it can do it while it's being recorded to the card at 60fps since one op I know has that lens and looves 240fps. Though I imagine that doesn't work for RAW output? No word on whether any other features are planned for new FS700 firmwares. I am holding out hope for more but it does seem unlikely. At least it's a good sign they are still thinking about the FS700 and adding features even if they are features 99% of people won't care about, maybe they just aren't ready yet to say what other more exciting features they will be adding with firmware. I wonder if they need to do different firmwares for people who have 3.0 (4k upgrade) vs people who do not.

Amazing news Mitch, as I'm starting a big 4K TV job in October!! ;)

Can you specify at this time whether 4K ProRes will be avaible only for FS700 users (Debayered from its 4K RAW signal) or will it be also open for cameras like Sony A7S?

Thank you!

...Pushing it to IBC 2014 Exhibition (12 - 16 Sep.) could be sensible, but we have to keep a new certification process in mind. This time, it's a major step again.

Thumbs up, Convergent Design!...
:)
Here we go today! Now, the FS700-O7Q Combo has a managable 4K workflow.
Congratulations.

We can open the 2.20 (?) Thread any hour, now.
:dankk2:

It's only an announcement that 4k is coming later this month - although we've heard that before haven't we! Mmm. Very disappointing non-story PR hype :( was kind of hoping it'd be released on Monday!

The small HD in-monitor color grading capability is interesting. Not sure if I'd ever use something like that but wondering if CD will be doing anything like that or whether the recordable LUTs are a better solution?

This is still great news that it's coming soon. Question for Mitch when he has a second... The press release doesn't mention frame rates. Is this only up to 30fps or did there end up being enough processing power in the 7Q to handle 50/60?

Well, at least it's some news giving us some idea of when to expect the 4K ProRes. Later this month. Hope it all works out!

Please let it be a FS700 Prores mode that detects the source and records it to Prores even if it's 4k 60fps or 2k 240fps or buffered 4k 120fps etc. And supports Prores LT and Prores Proxy!
