Odyssey 7Q Firmware 2.11.110

Hi Mitch, Do we know yet about if we will be able to shoot ProRes 4k up to 50fps or will we be limited to 25/30fps?

Cheers

Hi Mitch,

I'm pretty sure this has been asked, but I can't remember what the verdict was.

Can the 7Q add a grade to the S-Log footage while it's being recorded in real time / on-the-fly?

It's no fault of the 7Q, but the rec 709 and rec 800 that the FS700 puts out is terrible which is currently the only pre-graded options. I love S-Log, but sometimes it would be nice if it just came out of the 7Q graded. Nothing dramatic, maybe just some contrast and extra saturation. A basic LUT not just for monitoring; but for recording purposes in the 7Q.

Is this possible?
This will be possible in the future, but not currently enabled. The plan is that you will be able to create 3D-LUTS in programs such as Resolve and load them into an Odyssey7Q using an Odyssey SSD or Odyssey Utility Drive. Part of the reason for an Odyssey Utility Drive is to hold a library of looks. (Set five camera kits to match, share looks with friends, etc.). When this is enabled we will have a clear system for deciding where LUTs are and are not sent with very clear labeling so you don't accidentally do it wrong. We have to be careful because there's actually six different places one could choose to apply or not apply a LUT (SDI Out 1, SDI Out 2, HDMI Out, OLED, Image Analysis Tools, SSD Recording).

It's a fairly big task to make sure it is done properly so everything matches and so it is easy and intuitive to use. And as you all know, we are working on other things as well. But it is definitely in the plans.

My guess in beginning of July was "not before October" I don't mind being wrong and seeing it earlier.

Yes, I can remember.
We had some uproar upon that guess.

Pushing it to IBC 2014 Exhibition (12 - 16 Sep.) could be sensible, but we have to keep a new certification process in mind. This time, it's a major step again.

Thumbs up, Convergent Design!
We are pushy again in this part of the world.
:)

I've contacted support about this, but really curious if I'm the one with the issue. Since the July firmware update... lighting with the 7Q has been complete hell. The color shift is wrong (it's purply)... it's hugely underexposed when I get to edit, even though waveform and LUT viewing are fine (aside from purple cast) while shooting. Regardless if I use the older "linear" LUT or the new one.

I've sent a few images to support, but sad to say, they are completely clueless. First, they seem to not understand that my issue is not in the proxy/prores creating part via resolve (which they have blamed twice), but rather the actual image coming out of the firmware. I've tried adjusting all settings on the fs700... and then resetting... and then adjusting again... and then resetting. It's just not there. I was able to know what my dngs would be like in the pre-July firmware. But now it's a complete crapshoot.

Here's some images. This one is from today highlighting the color cast issue.

And here's where I first noticed the issue. these are from "quick look" on mac.
The first is from back in May. This is my dng and I knew how I would be able to grade it.

And here is from a followup interview. This was lit the same... and on the 7Q it looked properly exposed (EXCEPT for the purple tint)... but when i brought all the dngs to my comp. this is what I get.

It's mostly recoverable in Resolve... but with the poor support from CD over the last 2 or so months... I feel like i now have a tool that shoots much worse than my 5D hacked or new A7s. and cost 5 times more than each.

Llrik,

Mine isn't like that. It's a little green, but not way off like yours. I think you should call Dan Keaton as he really tries hard to get things done. The in-office Tech Support is not nearly as helpful as Dan.

If DNGs are an issue, try these settings and it should closely match 4K2HD

Project Settings > Color Science > DaVinci ACES

Camera RAW
1) Cinema DNG
2) White Balance = As Shot
3) Color Space = BMD FIlm
4) Gamma = BMD Film
5) Lift = 0
6) Gain = 0
7) Contrast = -20 (This is new to Resolve 11)
8) Exposure = 3.00 (on Resolve 10, it was 2.5, so maybe test it a bit)

yeah, dan will try as hard as he can to help out.

Also, did you try to reapply the Firmware? Same process like updating the FW, but from 2.11 to 2.11.

Can you describe what you exactly do in your workflow from shoot to post?

I see in one of your pics you have the LUT activated, this causes a purple shift on my unit too afaik. I don't use LUT's that often though.

Honestly, i don't mean to sound rude, but i think that the problem really is your workflow. When i view the RAW's via Quicklook, my dng's also seem underexposed, altough i exposed them correctly. All the dng's shot with the odyssey need a + 2.5 Exposure correction, 0.8 gamma correction and the normal fancy "BMD Film" selections in resolve to match what you were seeing while shooting.

These adjustments do not mean that you will introduce more noise in the image or whatnot. This has nothing to do with underexposure.

As Stephan says, avoid the LUTs on the 7Q as you are doing. Also avoid the CD LUTs in post. Just use the settings above and it's pretty good in Resolve. I just leave it at S-Log. I just try to keep things as simple as possible, no LUTs, no REC 709. Only S-Log until final color and things work well.

regarding on 7Q it look properly exposed and when view in comp it look underexpose. Remember do not trust the image expose on your 7Q, especially you didn't set the 7Q screen brightness at lowest, just trust the waveform or false colour. I made this mistake on my 1st short film shoot by 7Q, fool by the brightness show on 7Q but didn't trust the waveform. Luckily fs700 raw is powerful enough to recover the exposure although lose some detail. The screen is showing more brighter than the recorded clip, i love to use false colour, some scene i will purposely make it underexpose to have the right mood, but most of the time i will just expose center waveform or to the right.

Hey Mitch, I was at the Adorama event yesterday where you mentioned something about announcing/releasing 4k prores in ~2 days. Could you clarify what you meant? Will we be getting a new firmware this week? Or is it just a status update on the progress of 4k?

That's not quite what I said, but I'm surprised it took a little time to hit the forum. ;-)

4K ProRes is coming soon to the Odyssey7Q. Possibly this month.

That's why I was asking what you said, it wasn't clear to me and I may have misheard and/or misunderstood. So I should just ignore and it's not news? I imagine 4k prores will be very much needed for us fs700 owners after Sony's announcement that's coming this Friday.

No, this is big news. Look at the words that I am typing.

4K ProRes coming very soon to the Odyssey7Q.

It's a big deal, and a big deal to FS700 users as well.

Ah - I believe he is referring to the use of the word "ProRes" and not "popular codec" - which implies that they have received the necessary certification from Apple.
