C500: Odyssey 7Q+ --- Can I ever trust my unit again?

Update - I sent my 2 - Samsung 1TB EVO 850 hard drives into CD. They received them on April 7th... Jim contacted me on April 10th letting me know my drives had tested fine and were good... I immediately called and spoke to Jim and explained that I had been able to repeat the corruption 100% of the time when the drives are run to full capacity with RAW to 4K 10bit ProRes HQ record mode. I had tested both these SSDs multiple times on 3 different 7Q+ units. I know it was not my camera because the 2 Samsung Pro 512GB models I have since had to purchased work fine. This does not happen in ProRes 2K 12bit 4444 XQ. Basically at some point in the last 100 GBs or so on the drives everything goes bad and the files become corrupted. It does not matter if you stop and record or run one long clip, things will fail at some point as you get closer to filling the drive. Jim was able to replicate the corruption and CD contacted Samsung to request more drives to test. I have not heard anything new from this point and CD still has my drives.

If I had to guess, it seems like the drives just are not fast enough to write the data as they approach capacity. It may have happened, but it is hard to believe I got 2 bad SSD hard drives from 2 different batches so it may very well be that there is an issue with the newer drives coming off the line at Samsung. Jim mentioned there had been a slight change to these drives, but that Samsung said they could not distinguish the drives to send CD new test models...

I have purchase 2 - Samsung Pro 512 Drives that have had no issues filling to capacity. I would strongly warn people to be careful and if you do purchase or already have the EVO 850 1TB make sure you run a test to fill the drives full with RAW to 4K 10bit ProRes HQ footage... even if you don't have the RAW bundle you can test it with the water mark. JUST MAKE SURE YOU RUN THE DRIVES FULL!

The 7Q+ never stopped recording and the image looked great on the 7Q+ monitor as the recordings were being made.... Jim did say he noticed the frame counter or something had change during his tests, but my camera operator was unaware of anything going wrong.

I have not heard from CD for a couple weeks and have not gotten my drives back, so I assume they are still testing my drives... I know Jim had put in a new request to Samsung to get more of these drives to test.

Based on my conversation with Samsung it is unlikely they will replace the drives. It is looking like I spend $700 for 2 drives that will likely not be replaced and were recommended on CD's short list. Had I known right away I might have been able to send them back to BH Photo, however this was not an issue when I was shooting in 2K, so I did not find out until CD gave me a free code for a 2 day RAW bundle trial. I thought it was a nice gesture from CD at the time but damn did it cost me. In 15+ years this was my first time I can remember loosing footage.

I have since purchased the RAW bundle in order to shoot 4K for my clients.

I am still not sure how I feel about this experience.

Has anyone else filled their Samsung EVO 850 1TB (not the 1000GB model) drive(s) full with RAW to ProRes 4k 10bit HQ?

I apologize for the Stream of Conscious writing above. I am trying to write and run, which is not always the best idea, LOL

Best Regards,

Chris

I'm a long term O7Q. Owner - I purchsed my unit with a C500 when the 500 first became available . Canon offered a bundle price in conjunction with the C500 and I took it. THe O7Q has been a workhorse for me ever since with no downtime and no recording problems .

Let C-D take care of you and I'm sure you'll be pleased.

Had nothing but good experiences with my Odyssey 7Q+. Been a customer of Convergent Design since the early days of the nanoFlash. Customer support is nothing but stellar.

Their customer support is speedy, friendly, and excellent.

Based on my conversation with Jim it seems as if Samsung made an adjustment to the Samsung EVO 850 1TB, CD called Samsung to test the new drives, Samsung said they could not distinguish the difference and so the new adjustment went untested. I am curious to know if others are having issues with this specific SSD drive if they fill the drive with 10bit ProRes 4K HQ footage. Better safe than sorry. I am hoping to protect others from my potential issue.

If CD is not able to keep up with testing these extremely limited drive recommendations as they make adjustments and it cost me $700 in SSD drives that I can't use and even worse the loss of important footage... well that sucks!

I understand it is possible that I was so incredibly unlucky to have gotten 2 - Samsung EVO 850 1TB drives, from 2 different batches, that are not fast enough to record ProRes 10bit 4k footage from the beginning of the drive all the way to the end of the drive. So, I'm asking if others who have this drive can test their drive by filling it up. According to my conversation with Jim the reason CD dose not recommend the EVO 850 512 and 256 was for this same reliability issue. I am also letting people know that this may be an issue to be careful of and if they are buying, maybe they should buy the pro model or full test the EVO 850 1TB before they put it in use... I got burned. I tested my drives full in 2k when I got them and I had been using those drives full with 2K 12 bit footage and all was good. I test the 4k before I went out with it, but I did not record for 2.5 hrs + to fill the drive completely. Now I am trying to let people know, maybe they should test their drives full in these modes even if you are not going to use them right away.

Hopefully others won't get burned. I may be that unlucky that I purchased 2 - Samsung EVO 850 1TB (non pro, not 1000GB) 2-3 months apart that appear to not be able to work at the speeds needed to record RAW to ProRes 422 HQ 10bit 4k.

People on this forum have contacted me personally with their concerns and I am just trying to help people have some knowledge of what happened to me and maybe protect themselves in the process.

I like the CD product, I hope they succeed and continue to make products, and I am having no issues now that I have purchase the Samsung 850 Pro 512 hard drives.

Chris

Hey Mark,

Their customer service is excellent.

Do you have a Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SSD (non pro, not 1000GB)? My issue is more with the media and testing of it.

I have not lost footage through gear failure in 15+ years. So to have 2 "not good enough" very new hard drives is concerning. Would like to hear if others have run these drives full in RAW to ProRes 422 10bit 4K? This can help us see if maybe these drives should not be on the recommended list. These drives maybe be working just fine for people in ProRes 12 bit 2k XQ at the moment but may corrupt footage in the same manner as my 2 drives.

I don't like loosing $700 and Important footage and I'm guessing others don't either... better safe than sorry.

My 7Q+ seems to be working great with all the option I want to use with my new Samsung 850 Pro 512 drives.

Best Regards,

Chris

its very sad to hear that u completely lost your footage, i can only imagine the conversation with the client in situation like that...

But its seems like my 1st guess was correct - cheap media. I am a constant samsung ssd user my self , but in PC only, and only PRO models, i have 3 PC that i own my self, and few pc that bought and configured for my relatives, never had problems yet. To be honest would never buy an evo, as i just scared. Still before it was a blind fear, but recently after the new NVM SSDs from samsung came out 960 pro and evo.... i decided to check some reviews to find out what is the difference between them, and i found 1 very detailed technical description... it was not in english, but i am sure if anyone will search will find something similar in english. and i must say there are very much different, and there are several reasons why evo is cheaper, and not as reliable as pro. evo is ok for games and fun, but not for PRO work.

It is deeply disturbing, stressful, and frustrating to loose footage. I'm naturally somewhat OCD so it can be hard to let go of the fear to this happening again...

Thank you Anatusa.

I called Samsung and their stance was they would not cover either EVO or Pro drives for not maintaining speed. They said both these drive lines are made for consumer computers and not meant for product like the 7Q+.

As far as Samsung, I had never knowingly owned a Samsung hard drive prior to the 7Q+ and since the only recommended drives are Samsung, this is our only choice with this product. The 7Q+ will not recognize other drives.

With that said, the Pro models seem to be working just find in my 7Q+.

From now on, I will run deeper longer tests with all new hard drives before hand and I hope others might learn from this and do the same. Again, I did a tests on the 4K, I just did not think to test it full since I had been filling the drives to capacity with ProRes 4444 2K 12bit footage.

Best Regards,

Chris

Just out of curiosity - were you not simultaneously recording to internal CF cards as well?

Of course the quality isn't as good, but I always feel good knowing that absolute worse case scenario I have a usable 1080p backup of whatever I'm shooting.
