Other: Odyssey 7Q+ and FS5????

Hey Mitch,

Do you know anything about the possibility of the Odyssey 7Q+ being used with
the new Sony FS5? I know Sony has announced 'upcoming' support for RAW and
4K output. I was wondering if you have discussed with them, the ability of this new
camera to work with the 7Q+, much as it works with the FS700 and FS7? Since
Sony has now released the specs of the camera, I thought you may be able to comment
on this now. Thanks for any insights you may be able to offer. If you can't say yet,
or won't know until Sony gives more info on their plans regarding this camera,
I totally understand.

Perhaps this answers your question. I cannot speak for Sony, but I can state that every output the FS5 can do now or in the future will be fully supported by the Odyssey7Q+.

Colorado Springs, CO (September 11, 2015) - Convergent Design today announces full support of the new Sony PXW-FS5 camera. The two companies have worked to provide compatibility between the Odyssey7Q+ monitor/recorder and the new camera. No other monitor/recorder offers this level of integration.

Upon initial release in November, the FS5 will output QFHD (UHD) 3840x2160 video in 4:2:2 10-bit up to 30p via HDMI. The Odyssey7Q+ will record this in Apple ProRes in 422(HQ), 422 or 422(LT). The FS5 will also offer output of S-Log2 and S-Log3, which are fully supported in the Odyssey7Q+ LUT System.

In a future option, the FS5 will also offer RAW output. The Odyssey7Q+ will support all resolutions and frame rates output in FS RAW, as it currently does with the Sony FS7 and FS700 cameras. The Odyssey7Q+ will be able to record these RAW signals as both CinemaDNG files as well as Apple ProRes.

The FS5 S-Log2 and S-Log3 gamma curves allow the full dynamic range of the camera’s sensor to be captured. Using the Odyssey LUT System, six different presets provide a preview of a color corrected image for proper lighting and exposure on set. In addition to the provided presets, the Odyssey LUT System also accepts up to 140 custom 3D-LUTs. The Odyssey LUT System can display the corrected image on its OLED screen and distribute it over two SDI and one HDMI outputs. These outputs can be individually adjusted to show the LUT, the original signal, or the either along with the Odyssey Image Analysis Tools such as Waveform, Vectorscope and False Color. Other Odyssey7Q+ monitor functions such as Pixel Hyper Zoom and Anamorphic De-Squeeze are also fully compatible with the FS5.[/TD]

Outputs 10bit 4:2:2 in 4K via HDMI? I was under the impression 4K on the FS5 was 8bit, 420 internal and 422 HDMI.

This would make the camera much more appealing (gaining a higher-end codec than fs7's XAVC-I via an HDMI recorder)

Ditto. I'd assumed that when the raw package came along, 10bit out would come along with it, as a lighter option. If 10bit is available to external recorders now, it makes it a lot more appealing.

Hey Mitch, What's this about a 5" Odyssey? Will it double as an EVF with user LUT's and LUT's being transferred to SDI out for secondary monitor?
As one of those who was teasing Mitch about a 5" Odyssey, I'll apologize
if anyone was taking it seriously. I was just messing around. I'm sure
Mitch knows there are some of us who would like a smaller 7Q+.
If CD thinks there are enough of us, I'm sure they will make it, if not,
they won't. So we will see but Mitch has never said there will be a 5"
one, some of us were just giving him a hard time.

Sweet! Thanks for the info!

$5,600 + $2,300 = $7,900 vs. $8,000.

Now, FS5 Raw upgrade will be extra.
That is true, but a lot of people out there already have a Odyssey, so
they don't have the extra cost. It's one of the nice things about
the Odyssey, it often can be used with future cameras as they come out.
Also, some people may want a couple different cameras (FS7, FS5 and/or
FS700) as an A/B cam set up...and an Odyssey could be shared between them.

Mitch,

I thought (perhaps mistakenly) that the HDMI inputs in the O7Q+ only did 8 bit at UHD resolutions, a function of the hardware being used? Is this not the case?

Naturally i guess you can't comment on any RAW plans. There's a single 3G-SDI port on there, so i'm purely speculating that it's going to be the same arrangement as the FS700?

cheers
Paul

Edit: 7Q+ is 10bit 4K HDMI http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?331824-Odyssey7Q-will-support-4K-10-bit-over-HDMI

Confusion comes from the first max. 8bit announcement and change with shipping, so no it's not 8bit only.

Anyhow the FS5 in limited to 8bit 4:2:2 UHD HDMI, confirmed by all my Sony contacts. 10bit is available only for HD through HDMI.

This camera is limited to 8bit in 4K acquisition as of now, and will continue until the raw support comes, at an expense and unknown waiting time.

My advice just accept it as an 8bit 4K camera. The image is still wonderful on the FS7 at 8bit XAVC-L which this camera's image is. Really beautiful. Require 10-12bit? go right now for an FS7 or even FS700.

Remember, as of now, no one, not Mitch, not anyone, knows a single piece of information about the raw upgrade. Not the date, whether it will require an additional XDCA/XDCA-like module, require hardware modification from Sony, how much, and even features it will provide. It can be 12bit raw with all the fs7 features to 7Q with a downloadable free firmware or a 2000$ send-in hardware upgrade with limited features, and everything in-between, nobody knows. SO, I'd treat that camera as one with the published specs now and as a buyers you'll be more satisfied, it an amazingly designed and featured packed camera with a very F55-like image for 5500$, just my advice.
