Other: Odyssey 7Q+ and FS5????

That is true, but a lot of people out there already have a Odyssey, so
they don't have the extra cost. It's one of the nice things about
the Odyssey, it often can be used with future cameras as they come out.
Also, some people may want a couple different cameras (FS7, FS5 and/or
FS700) as an A/B cam set up...and an Odyssey could be shared between them.

You definetly need to factor in the value of second hand used Odysseys when calculating total cost.

That Odyssey could be sold for quite a sum you know... It may not sell for much 3 years down the road. So value lost + interest on top of the capital cost during ownership = cost to use.

I have the 7Q, not the 7Q+. But since the new Sony FS5 has an SDI Out, i assume i could keep the original 7Q and still get all recording options now and in the future for the FS5?

Well, not exactly. To record UHD from the FS5 you need the 7Q+. The 7Q will accept 4K over SDI however the FS5 (and FS7 for that matter) only output 4K/UHD via their HDMI port.

No problem, of course, with recording HD from the FS5 to your 7Q

I have not even glimpsed this camera, but
this article seems to say 4k over SDI is 'coming'.
(I'm assuming RAW like the FS700.) If so,
you'd think the Odyssey could convert to
ProRes like with the FS700.

That is 4k raw, which will be a paid upgrade. If you want UHD at product release, then it is UHD via HDMI

Ah, yeah sounds like i'd need to wait and see about the RAW upgrade before i can treat it like the current FS700 and expect all the same recording options over SDI. I don't quite understand why you wouldn't be able to record UHD at release over SDI, and only over HDMI. But, if that's how it is then that's how it is!

Hi Mitch ! Sony states the output from the HDMI is 8bit 4:2:2 Do you know if they may have limited this and
it might be possible to output 10bit 4:2:2 with the paid Raw upgrade. I am looking at getting the FS5 and this is the one
feature that I would love to see implemented. If it's possible I really hope they consider implementing it as I would be
happy to pay for this down the line. Thanks

The HDMI output of the FS5 in 4K will indeed be 8-bit 4:2:2. I was wrong on this before.

I cannot comment on what the RAW output of the camera will be. That is for Sony to state, not me. But I can tell you that by necessity a RAW signal always has a deeper bit depth than a derived video signal, and sometimes a considerably deeper bit depth. The FS700 camera has 12-bit linear RAW data but in video modes the camera's architecture is all 8-bit.

Thanks Mitch ! I'm new to Raw but would really like the option of 10bit 4:2:2 at 4K 25/30fps if at all possible. I'm not sure if you can pass this on to Sony, or if they would listen, but I for one would be willing to pay for this feature if available in an upgrade. One of the reasons I am opting for the FS5 is it's size, having 4K 10bit 4:2:2 output would be the icing on the cake.

Just a quick suggestion, I was wondering if Convergent Design have considered producing a smaller 5" version of the odyssey 7 for cameras like the FS5 ?
A smaller and lighter pared down version that can record 4K over SDI and HDMI in 10bit 4:2:2 and Pro Res 4K-DCI RAW would be a big hit.
IMO the key to it's success would be it's features, weight, and thickness, and the ability to use it like you do with your main LCD (I would love to use this in the same way as the new FS5 LCD which offers great flexibility)

P.S. With the new Red Raven and the URSA Mini soon to be released (plus talks about a URSA Mini price reduction) it would be a real boost if Sony (if possible) allowed
4K 10bit output in 4:2:2, seeing as cameras like the GH4 can already do this.
Plus it would not affect the FS7 as it already has this internally.
Just a thought !

Just wondering what you guys think ? Would it be possible for Sony to add 4K 10bit output to the FS5 (via a firmware) instead of 8bit as advertised and what would this depend on ?
I personally wouldn't mind paying the extra for this and the Raw output they have advertised (once it's not a crazy price)
I hope somebody from Sony is listening as now would be the time to introduce this especially with the URSA Mini and RED Raven on the horizon !
Just my 2 cents !

Personally, I don't think there will be a 4k RAW output via SDi as the FS7 can only do this with the additional back.

Typically Sony, everything is possible...

Red just announced the specs for the new Red Raven, it’s pretty impressive but the form factor and price is not for me.
Main Features:
RED RAVEN: 4K RAW @ 120fps, 2K RAW @ 240fps, 2K ProRes 422 HQ @ 60fps, 16.5+ Stops via APS-C n DRAGON Sensor, Wi-Fi Control, Fixed Canon Mount.

I do like the fact that it can record both 4K and Pro Res 422 HQ internally at the same time !(2K only). However it also lacks the built in ND’s, XLR's and other features of the FS7 and FS5.
I really hope Sony (if possible) allows 4K 10bit 4:2:2 (DCI) output over SDI and HDMI with their paid upgrade for the FS5.

Now why would you think that when the FS700 can output RAW directly from its SDI port with no adapter required?

I don't think I'm talking out of school here when I state that Sony has already told me personally that no adapter will be required on the FS5. Please note that the XDCA Extension Unit for the FS7 does numerous functions in addition to RAW output. I would note that the most significant (at least in terms of the engineering work necessary to support it) is the HD ProRes encoding function.

Really curious how long it might take for RAW via SDI on the FS5. I've got the original 7Q and would actually like to just hold on to that and use it for the FS5 eventually. Hope it's not like 2 years out!

You and everyone else! Sony is being very tight-lipped about it. Juan Martinez, the chief Sony bod, said it would be available "eventually", which doesn't sound too promising, although that might be reading too much into a casual remark. Perhaps the release of the Raven will give them a bit of a shove.
