probably a nice camera if you like infinite depth of field that you get with tiny chips like it's 1/3".

Well obviously for a camera like that, the DOF is generally pretty deep, but I want to know how the workflow of the MS Pro Duos or the removable flash drive is. And how the quality is compared to XDCam , DVCProHD, etc...

I love how depth of field is the new standard measuring tool of cameras

Just goes to show what the current crop has been raised on, doesn't it? :(

As Alan Barker said: "Perhaps the saddest delusion of all is that buying the latest camcorder and editing program will somehow transform a mouse pusher into a movie maker. Equipment doesn’t make art. Don’t buy equipment before you have a reason to use it. If you have nothing to say - please don’t embarrass yourself by saying it. ...

"Here in California there’s a waiting period for buying a handgun. There should also be one for purchasing a camcorder. It’s usually a self-destructive act of passion. If you find yourself salivating over the B&H catalog, if you spend long hours reading discussion group postings that start out, 'I got my blah blah camcorder today and here are my impressions...,' and if you have no project burning to be made, please - please don’t become another sucker for the DV revolution. Put your money back in your pocket and do something worthwhile with your life."

And you identify yourself with those utterly arrogant statements, Jay?

Piotr, I do not think the statements are "uttery arrogant." In fact, my 35 years of experience (as well as hundreds of thousands of hours of bad video online), and statements like the one above, have all proven them to be very accurate.

I'm curious. Why do you think they are arrogant?

Jay, I'm afraid that accurately explaining why I think so would exceed my abilities in using English :)

Anyway, I guess all people on forums like this - regardless of the age we are of (I'm 55) - have the right to their passions (video in this case). We do not pretend we're "real pros", do we? I have my own discipline in which I have all the reasons to consider myself a pro - but I would never patronize some professional film maker for putting his/her passion in CAD/CAM/CAE...

I hope you got my point. That said, I agree naivety and blind trend-following should be "corrected" - but in a little more friendly fashion.

Yeah I've never been a huge fan of preventing people from hurting themselves which is all that might happen with the perpetual need to buy the latest and greatest.

And if folks are out there measuring their movies by DOF and not by stories, etc...then there is just less competition, right?

--This post is not meant to be snarky--

DOF is not a new tool for measuring cameras imho. 1/3" has always given deep DOF and has always been considered barely professional/prosumer by the industry.

What is new is the hoards of people who use 1/3" cameras and try to put them in a "cinematic" role.

I prefer to think of it as selective focus. Which by itself implies that the user has the skills and knowledge of what to select as the subject.

With a 1/3" chip camera, the whole world is on focus unless you go to extremes which is not very positive for the image. Thus not allowing for selective focus.

The seemingly simple task of shooting an interview in a small space and the positive attributes of a 2/3" camera really come to the forefront. A 1/3" chip camera will show the viewer the wall behind as much as the subject.

Why have a written all of this? Because I always will judge a camera's worth to me based upon the size of its chips. Its my money and work.

Your English far exceeds my Polish, which is zero!

I have no probelm with that whatsoever. So we are in total agreement, so far.

We do not pretend we're "real pros", do we?

Some do, and perhaps that's the problem. As has been pointed out before by others, these forums are, in theory, here to provide accurate(?) information on the given subject. Those who are "uninformed" and/or "uneducated" in the subject who may give flip, off-hand, ill-informed comments such as the one in question, contribute nothing to the idea of gathering accurate information.

I have my own discipline in which I have all the reasons to consider myself a pro - but I would never patronize some professional film maker for putting his/her passion in CAD/CAM/CAE...

Good point! What if some week-end hobbiest went into a forum on CAD/CAM/CAE and started making like comments, as though they were hardcore facts? I dare say your opinion would be similar to mine and others.

I hope you got my point.

Maybe, maybe not. Only you can tell for sure.

That said, I agree naivety and blind trend-following should be "corrected" - but in a little more friendly fashion.

"Blind trend-following" is an excellent way of putting it, Piotr. I can't count the times in the past when I have tried using a "more friendly fashion" of correcting. But, again, experience has shown that more often than not it doesn't work.

Besides, I didn't think it was unfriendly. I thought it was a great, and yes humorus, observation on the part of another professional with whom I agreed. Maybe it's one of those cases where "the truth hurts."

In any case, if people are going to make erroneous comments, they ought to expect pointed replies. Heaven knows I've received my share!

Bla-bla, bla-bla-bla. Um. Er. Um. Right. Bla-bla. 6 seconds of test video. What do you think? Um. Great cam.

heh... Also, is it just me... but why has everyone adopted "zed" in the place of "z"? I mean, fine if the Brits wanna call "z" "zed".. no biggie, but Jordan didn't sound british... Is he?

Just find it odd that all of a sudden non-brits call it Zed.

Here's one for you since your so, Um, F*cking smart with your assumptions and judments. DO YOUR OWN F*CKING HOME WORK! You sound like a little girl, yes... It's possible to read and watch them all before you make a desision.

You sound like you have been burned before, not my fault. Bla-bla-bla!

Jupiter, you are being angry. I don't know why did you take my comment personally. What I meant is that this 22-minute video contains only 6 or so seconds of actual footage and 21-something minutes of waving the camera around and stating things - in painfully slow manner - that are better served by means of other media, namely, printed word and still pictures. It takes only 10 words to write "the camera accepts Memory Stick Pro Duo and SDHC cards" and 4 seconds to read it. These guys might be great cinematographers, but they did not care to prepare this particular "review", not mentioning that some information presented is incorrect or incomplete, like they call the additional recording module a hard drive, which it is not.

Instead of "reading and watching them all" one can be served well by the comprehensive Adam Wilt's review. Sadly, he does not do video samples, I wonder what Philip Bloom's review of this camera could be. I don't expect every his review to be as fancy as the one of the HM100, it is 10 minutes long, but you would not notice that. Even his more mundane ones are concise and informative like this one of the Z7.
