NTSC or PAL?

Hi! New here.

Sorry if there's already been a topic about this, I Couldn't search cause the words were too common. Anyway, I've decided to buy The dvx100 or the dvx100a. I Live in the PAL region (finland) but the PAL version doesn't have the 24p mode. So which is worse converting the NTSC image to PAL, or faking the 24p on post? Also is there a big difference between the 100 and 100a? Tell me any ideas you have. Also if you have anything else I should know before I buy, tell me. And Thanks.

I don't like NTSC. And for all I've learned PAL is a better system then NTSC for color reproduction because it handles the faults better.
Off course I don't know the difference for 24p vs 25p. I guess it's not much. But do keep in mind that you can make 24p footage out of 25p quite easely. But with an NTSC cam, if you want to shoot something other then 24p (TV job or something) it'll be worthless. Because you're in a PAL country.

The PAL DVX runs in 25p mode. It's no different to 24p except it's for PAL. No need to convert or fake in post, just shoot in 25p.

Hello, Untzikka! :)

I'm from Finland also, but I think it's better to speak english in this forum.

Where have you been thinking of buying that PANASONIC DVX100a? Any good places with good prizes?

:)

Thanks for the help (and correction). The PAL version seems to be a better choice, It's only that if you try to find a decent used dvx (in ebay), they are usually the NTSC version. It's really hard as it is to find a used DVX here in finland, and the new ones cost a lot. There was a used DVX100a in www.avecom.fi (it must be the PAL version because it only says 25p) . It had 90 hours of use, and no mention of any damage. The Price was 3300€, seems so far the best deal in finland. Although, I don't have the money yet, so that's gonna be selled by the time. What do you think petelms, you seen any better deals in finland?

The PAL model is the DVX100E not A.

More accurately the NTSC model is AG-DVX100AP (P, I think, standing for Panasonic America), and the PAL model is AG-DVX100AE (E standing for Europe).

(Don't confuse it with Sony's different use of P standing for PAL!)

The "A" is a must have as it denotes the latest model which corrected several operational deficiencies in the original AG-DVX100P and AG-DVX100E (no "A") cameras.

The PAL model is the one you should go for your country's video standard, higher vertical resolution and no complicated NTSC framerate pull-down conversions required if you want to go to film out (just a frame for frame print and a slight audio speed change).

Hm...from what u all say...it seems like PAL would be the better system over NTSC.

Not necessarily - as you are in an NTSC country.

It depends a lot on what your intentions are. Transfer to film is expensive, and perhaps only worth it if you've made a brilliant calling card movie that absolutely must have a film print because you want to get it into a high profile film festival that only accepts movies on film for screenings. I think most film festivals will now, or in the near future, be happy to digitally project off both NTSC and PAL DVD or videotape.

On the other hand, if your more likely final format is a DVD or videotape for the US market or perhaps even getting it shown on TV, then it would make more sense to originate in the video format for your country ie NTSC, because otherwise you might have to standard convert from PAL to NTSC which would degrade your image unnecessarily.

There are US low-budget filmmakers who have gone for the PAL model, but I would suspect they definitely, primarily, want to end up with a film prints.

Untsikka lives in Finland, which he says is PAL...

Very valid points ericyoung, but for Untsikka they aren't applicable unless he needs to sell a lot to NTSC video markets.

Untzikka, I think the cheapest place here in Finland is Rajala: www.rajala.fi It sells the PANASONIC AG-DVX100A (PAL version) for 3599,- EUR. But I think that is also quite high prize. I've been thinking of buying this camera from Germany. Check out this shop:

www.mediatec.de

They are selling it for 3090,- EUR.

I would love to get some other places from Germany also which are selling this DVX...but I haven't find any other shop yet... :(

Where are you living, Untzikka, by the way? I'm in Helsinki.

Absolutely mmm! I was quoting and replying to blckhawk542's comment and he is in West Orange, NJ which I guessed was New Jersey in the US. :)

I recently got my dvx100AE (PAL), here in italy.

First: get the PAL version. 25p looks the same of 24p. many films are shot in 25f/s in europe as well. on film. also, there are no weird pulldown algorithms since the camera just gets couple of fields from the same full frame. Also the resolution is higher with respect to ntsc. the only thing you would miss is the double progressive mode NTSC has (30p and 24p), which allows for better looking slow motions.

Second: i would get the 'A' version. there are several nice improvements which you will appreciate. also the optics has been improved much.

I confirm the lowest prices i found in europe are mediatech in germany (notice that price is without 16% VAT) and adcom.it in italy (i'm not sure they sell internationally though) at about 2900 EUR +20%VAT.

That german site... should've taken those german classes in elementary school
I think it had an online-shop of some kind, but either it was down or I couldn't access it. What about U.S, can you get a PAL version from there at all?

Petelms, I live in Heinola :thumbdown It's a pretty low profile indie scene in here

Still from my search you can get pal cameras in the US. but you will have to pay extra for the international warranty, delivery, and obviously the import taxes. At the end of the game you will end up paying about the same amount but, with a US MACK international warranty, which, assuming it really works, will at least delay your repair time if ever needed. also there are risks involved with the cross-ocean delivery.

And stay away from some US scammer web sellers!
bhphotovideo.com is a reference for a normal priced and reliable purchase.

about the german site mediatec, you can write or call them. they speak english.

I've seen PAL cameras also in US, but as Baluardo already said we have to pay those taxes when ordering from outside US. So, basicly that's about it then, I guess. :(

Ahaa, you have to pay also taxes for that MEDIATEC prize...that was new thing to me...****! :thumbdown

I just can't believe there is not other place in Germany where you can order this DVX100A???? Maybe we just haven't found it yet...

Untzikka, maybe we could get some discount if we order 2 cameras from them at the same time, hehehehehhe! And yeah, low profile indeed here!

Since we are talking about money here, i recently found a very good deal for another camera, the sony HDR-FX1 (the hd), online, at www.casaelettronica.it. around 3200 EUR incl. taxes. it's still italian site, i guess with italian warranty.

In this forum many ppl dont appreciate that camera since the NTSC version doesnt do the 24p. but maybe the pal version does a satisfying 25p (equivalent to the pal dvx100)?
