now that the duel adapter doesn't work with Snow Leopard...

is there any other way to unload cards in the field without having to occupy the camera (shy of some $2-30,000 p2 field units)? Or if space and time is an issue would a firestore be the best choice? Rather not but i can't afford to buy THAT maybe p2 cards at this time compare to the cheapness of space in a firestore.

I'm about to receive my HPX in about 15 hours so the time is now to figure out what else i need to purchase to make things as efficient as possible.

Thanks.

buy a cheap pc laptop w/ PCMCIA (and i mean the cheapest thing you can get prob around 500$), get macdrive, and offload to your mac formatted HDDs.

Will a duel adapter work if you boot up a intel mac with windows? I rather spend $900 on a laptop I'll enjoy and be able to use in general and as a p2 dump than a cheap pc that is nothing more to me than a harddrive.

Panasonic has announced that they are going to develop a single slot P2 reader, and I plan to switch to that when it is available, assuming the price is reasonable. The announcement is discussed on Abel Cine Tech's website.

In the meantime, Duel tech support told me that the adapter should work in Windows running under Boot Camp, but you have to download and install the Windows driver from their website. I haven't tried that, but I did install Windows XP and the Windows P2 driver and P2 Reader on an old Pentium 3 laptop with a PCMCIA slot, and that works fine for offloading P2 footage. I also plan to install Leopard on a mobile hard drive and to boot up from that drive whenever I need to offload footage to my MBP using the duel adapter.

question is do you really need snow leopard? it would be easier to just stay on leopard until something else comes up or duel systems writes a snow leopard driver...

Well for now I'm on an older system on tiger! But soon i planned to purchase something that will take me out of 2006 and that would come stock with Snow... I could find an old copy and down-grade though. Will the newest version of the final cut suite run on leopard?

yeah. the current version of FCP runs fine on as far back as 10.5.6 (according to published specs)

i have a new 2.8 4gig macbook pro running leopard and due to the duel systems lack of current support. i have ZERO plan to migrate to snow leopard for the forseeable future. as it doesnt really have any features that are going to make my day any more productive...

good to know! so a duel adapter and a pre-snow mac would be a legit way to get the job done then without the firestore (it always scare me that the cable will come undone, sometimes i have to run or get in unusual angles so i have a basis of my fear).

if anyone has a better way I'm still all ears.

no no no. the duel adapter and a firestore are different things for different jobs

all the duel adapter does is convert the expresscard slot of a macbook pro into a pcmcia slot to accept a P2 card for transferring card content to a laptop or external hard drive. its NOT a tool for live capturing - so unless youre using a macbook pro (or expresscard equipped windows laptop), its of no use to you...

a firestore is a medium to record onto as an alternative to P2 cards or tape.

and again, no. shooting to a computer in most cases is not a reasonable alternative to using a firestore - UNLESS you are shooting in a studio or stationary camera situation OR you have some guy running along behind you with a laptop. which would just be retarded ; )

ive used firestores for years with my old XL2, hvx200 and hpx170 and they have never let me down. as long as you pay attention to what youre doing you'll typically be fine. now i wouldnt go shooting in a paparazzi situation or mosh pit with one. youd likely pull the connection in a few seconds...

im lost. what is it exactly that youre wanting to achieve here?

You can do it a lot cheaper than that; a $299 netbook and a $50 addonics adapter gets you to $350. You don't need MacDrive, because you can use FAT32 drives, which the netbook can write to and the Mac can read.

I'm not sure if I typed it wrong or whatever, but we are on the same page, as much as it doesn't sound like it. I was saying I will need more space at times than my cards will allow. To fix this i either get a laptop and duel adapter to dump cards off into or i get a firestore to shoot into instead of using cards.

yeah, but doesnt FAT32 only work with folders under 2 gigs in size?
