If you are on a new Macbook Pro 2.2 or 2.4ghz, 15" or 17", be sure to not run the Macbook Pro 1.0 update , though you probably already have anyways since its in software update. Any ways, dont run the update, if you have then its time to reinstall the OS and then NOT run the update.

Hope it helps some people as ive been dealing with this problem all week and finally found the article.

This problem has been driving me FREAKIN CRAZY!!! I'm sooooo glad to see someone else is having this issue. I was honestly trying to figure out when I was taking my new 17" to the Apple store to figure out what hardware went bad. Is there anyway to uninstall this... I'm guessing not. Apple should release a uninstaller, I'm not excited about completely rebuilding my laptop. Anyone have any words of advice about archive and install? Should we just bite the bullet and start clean or is that an acceptable method?

I looked for a way , but reinstalling is the only way i could find.

Archive and install is a waste, you are much better backing your stuff up on your own, then doing a wipe and install, archive and install just wastes HDD space.

Im not glad you were having this problem, but im glad I wasnt the only one going bat s**t crazy about it. My 17" is new so i didnt have to redo too much anyways.

So get your stuff backed up, and then when it comes time for software updating, set the Macbook Pro Software update to 'Ignore' by selecting it and hitting the Delete Key.

Sorry, certainly not glad someone else was going through the frustration, very glad to know it is a matter of not installing an update as opposed to a quirky hardware problem specific to only my laptop... I'm sure you understand.

When you install OS X you get the option to transfer your user files and settings from an older computer, if I used SuperDuper to make a clone of my drive, am I at least safe to use that in my backup process? Recreating Entourage, iTunes, finding and installing all those little apps again is a process I wouldn't mind skipping. I'm also thinking of copying the FCS2 content into its proper location on my new build and telling the install to skip it, that should work right?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm relatively new to the Mac platform and still figuring some things out.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I was also concerned my laptop was a dud. It seems a shame to have to uninstall/reinstall.. can't they just fix whatever it is?

It has ruined some great motion work over the last few days :(.

Thanks guys.

I second that. They've obviously recognized the problem, it would seem easy enough to produce a patch that would "undo" whatever that update "did". Any veteran Mac guys out there able to comment on how often this type of thing occurs? I've just been applying Apple updates with complete confidence... not a good idea?

Ive been applying updates for years, ever since the G3 Blue towers in the OS 9 days, and this is my very first time encountering something like this. Ive owned and own several different systems in my days, including each Macbook Pro revision, iMacs G5 and Intel, G5 towers and Mac Pro towers, list goes on, i am still confident in installing updates, just will check with apple first.
