November 3rd announcement in Hollywood

-The market for a $2000-$3000 PRO HDSLR is huge and there is currently no competition. The market for a $5000-$15000 S35 video camera is small in comparison and already catered for by Sony and Panasonic. If I was the marketing VP at Canon I know what I would have been putting my resources into since the 5D went to the movies. Why would they ignore their new found HDSLR market?

I agree that the market is huge and waiting. Every shoot I'm on NOW everyone from the PA to an extra has a t2i, 60d, etc, etc. That being said, I hope you're right, but I don't see such a "global" announcement just being a middle of the line full frame DSLR. I do believe the day is near when we WILL see the camera you're talking about, maybe even before this announcement, but seems like a stretch...

Who knows... like Barry Green says, it could be anything at this point. Maybe Canon's getting into the studio movie business.

This is a plausible scenario...

...Canon is announcing this significant date with enough lead time to get the would-be market stirring in conversation and speculation as to what this new "thing" is going to be.

In doing this, they are conducting market research to determine the final specification of this launch product. I believe that even Canon does not have a single spec-sheet chosen as of yet. They are closely monitoring forums like DVXUser to see what people are frantically predicting that this product will be. They are using there observations as input to decide on the final specs of the new next generation DSLR or DSLR-Killer.

The teaser they provided is ambiguous enough to give them enough flexibility to determine the launch specs just days prior to November 3rd. By "launch-specs" I mean it could be a DSLR, Camcorder or DSLR-Camcorder hybrid, so even the genre is not yet decided. How revolutionary they want to be is still up in the air and will be influenced by tabloid speculation on user forums...etc.

In doing this, they are bringing out the ideas from the subconcious in each and every Canon Pro-DSLR user and placing it on paper. Have they conducted detailed focus groups already? I'm sure they have, this is just the extra assurance they need to decide the course of direction they want to take for the next 2.5 years

The November 3rd announcement date is also situated perfectly from their planned February 2012 hard-launch of whatever "this" new product is going to be.

Therefore this theory ascertains that November 3rd will be a soft-launch of a camera/camcorder-type product. This theory also assumes that no other Canon non-photo/video capturing product has the possibility of being launched on that date either.

Further extension of this theory would suggest that Canon has some new, proprietary patent/feature up their sleeves. Why you ask? Because conducting such a public world-wide focus group would leave them vulnerable to their competitors such as Nikon. After all, these are public forums and could easily be monitored by Nikon, Sony, Panasonic...etc as well. Therefore, Canon must have some killer proprietary top-secret feature ready to go, making them virtually invulnerable to their competitors. They are simply figuring out which vehicle (i.e. genre of product - DSLR, Camcorder, DSLR-Camcorder Hybrid) to deliver this "killer-feature".

The anti-theory would suggest that Canon is announcing a hostile takeover of Nikon Corporation, thus beginning a new era in photo/video.

Plausible yes?

Whether or not it's "the Ron Howard thing" they are still announcing something.
I don't doubt it's connected to the Imagin8ion project in some way - but it would make sense for them to use it launch a new product.
The Ron Howard project has already launched - and it supposedly culminates in Ron Howard producing a film with Canon gear.
Would be a good opportunity to launch a new camera, don't you think?

Not saying that's what it is - just saying that even if it is connected to the Ron Howard project it doesn't negate the possibility or likelihood that it also means the launch of a new product.

The Ron Howard thing is based on the concept that a film will be made out of the 8 most intriguing images submitted in a PHOTO competition.

What better way to launch a DSLR as a filmmakers tool than this?

thought they made this movie already:

Could it be?
Yes it could
Something's coming
Something good
If I can wait
Something's coming I don't know what it is
But it is
Gonna be great!

It could *still* be some boring office thing :badputer:

Canon have come long way since they were the Kwanon Camera co, and have diversified enormously.

While it's possible that the photo and video divisions talk to each other occasionally I think the office machine types live in their own little closed blinkered world, seeing everything through a distorting prism of business machines.

It's entirely possible for their marketing types (Even more blinkered) to talk of "Global", earth shaking, etc and book a Hollywood launch for some ghastly office *thing* hawk-spit-ding :violent5:

So I'm not holding out any hopes at all for the 3rd Nov announcement.

D-D-D-Dang!!!!

Ectobuilder: not plausible, because Canon doesn't do long drawn out introductions. At least, historically they haven't. While JVC and Panasonic and Sony will preview a new model as much as eight or nine months before it's ship date, I can't remember Canon ever doing that. When they announce something, it seems to me like it is always shipping within a month of when it is previewed (or thereabouts).

If it's actually a product (camera), then it's surely an EF-ENG, likely 4k and sub 10k. It is *not* the Mk3, no chance in hell it comes during 2011.

Either way -- these are times when you are not announcing cameras months b4 release...

I hope it's a camera. I won't be shocked if it's not, but I hope it is. I doubt it's a DSLR (if it is a camera). I hope it's in between the AF100 and the F3. Not that it would do me any good, but...the more competition there is out there, the more "downward pressure" it puts on the marketplace and that means that the ALREADY RIDICULOUS NEX5N/HX9 combo is going to be even more UNIMAGINABLE in 3 years. Here's hope for Canon announcing a "category buster" in the indie filmmaker class of cameras!!! Good luck to us all!!!

I bumped into a small advertising crew shooting on the streets of Toronto today, and started chatting with the DP. ( no names so nobody gets in trouble ) He said that a very smart birdy in California ( who has access to some new products ) told him that the Nov 3 announcement is Canon's answer to the Sony F3 / FS-100. They will be PL and EF mount video cameras. Definitely NOT DSLR cameras for now.
