hey all,

im wondering if anybody has noticed this when encoding out to dvd (mpeg2) or is it a normal thing... Well the problem is when i encode my dv50 sd footage to mpeg 2 dvd the footage after seems to loose a lot of sharpness.. i know that compression kills a bit of quality.. but still my dv50 footage ends up looking like dv25 footage..

Im using mainconcept mpeg encoder within vegas to do my encoding.. anyway ive posted a few pics as an example of what im rambling about..

also.. if anybody could suggest a really good mpeg2 encoder

Hey jitcam - I'm not a vegas user but I've had similiar results with Premiere and HDV footage getting ugly. The best method I've found so far is to output an uncompressed avi from premiere and to use virtualdub to resize (lancoz3 as the method) it to my output size (720x480 for DVD) and then taking this resized avi into TMPG and encoding as an mpeg2 using whatever the slow but good method of encoding is. Take that m2v/wav into encore and author away. Its a pain, but it has worked out great for me. With DVCPRO50 you could of course skip the virtualdub step as its already the correct size. Just thought I'd throw in the virtual dub step for anyone else. Would be interested to hear others experiences. I've also been using TMPEGEnc Express with incredible results for WMV's too. It puts out some small file sizes that rival quicktime (which I wish my clients would use, but they want wmv...)

The best on a PC in CinemaCraft. It runs $2K.

But I've seen pretty good results with ProCoder from Canopus.

You can get a watermarked demo at the web site.

yeah, ive heard of cinemaCraft, i might give it a try, the thing though i like about mainconcept is that i do my dvd out from within vegas..

i sometimes use that method(encoding to uncompressed) when i have smaller files to deal with.. the problem though is with some large files.. uncopmpressed their size gets really huge. i think im going to have to try a different encoder.. i'll post any further results!

JitCam, have you tried encoding that using Procoder Express for Edius using the "Best Quality" setting and 10-bit Intra DC Precision?

I'm wondering if there is some inappropriate ITU 601/709 color space conversion being done, the highlights are getting washed out.

Could you possibly make a few seconds of raw video from that clip available for download?

Being completely mac based, I'm not too familar with the options for PC. Though you could try reducing the length of your GOP structure and maybe increase the settings on the resize sampling.

yeah the highlights are getting washed out.. i was wondering about that also..im going to give procoder a try also.. i'll try to post a clip even though my internet speed isnt that fast :\

Hi Nathan,

I'd like to hear you suggestions for best mac based workflow. I've been doing hundreds of tests going from FCP dvcpro HD 720 to SD dvd. Read a million post, tried them all - still not happy with end results. What do you suggest? Are you working with DVDSP? What about the GOP? Do you output uncompressed? Do you go to copressor straight out of FCP and at what settings? Apreciate your thoughts.

Cheers,
Dale

I use sorenson squeeze 4.5 it rocks. I can export dv50 from vegas in either uncompressed or matrox's dv50 codec, compress to mpeg2 for DVD and it looks awesome!
