Noktor 50mm f/0.95 - new micro four third lens from a new company

I'm so glad I made the choice to get a GH1. It just keeps getting better and better. With Ciecio7 making a PL mount adapter and these guys making affordable fast primes... it's a great time for GH1 users!

Wow such a low aperture. I'm new to the whole photography scene and hearing .95 when its usually 1.8 or higher... it's amazing. but im probably going to guess it'll be pretty pricey. A few hundreds maybe. I'd probably just get canon fd prime lens.

Hmm if it looks just like that Sanko, comparing the two pictures. Wow, if it really is $730 they'll probably double the price after changing the mounts and rebranding it in there own names. Totally not worth it. Like i said just stick to FD primes.

Wait a minute. Just did a little research. Seems like some 50mm f/.95 are pretty expensive. Like the Noctilux which is f/1 and priced at $11,000. Don't know if that is just because its by Leica, master of all cameras, or some other reason. According to Noktor's twitter site their 50mm primes will be alot cheaper than the Noctilux so maybe we're getting a good deal here. Just have to wait and see for the price release. Or you can try asking Cierco to make an adapter for the Senko :)

Leicas are expensive, that's for sure.
But paying 1.5K on rebranded 750 lens... is a joke.
I guess it'll come under 1K, something like 800 bucks.

I'm guessing it to be at least $900 or more. Having to replace all mounts on the lens won't come cheap from having to manufacture there own mounts. If they buy the Sanko lens and the new mounts that'll already cost them around $800 and to make a bigger profit from those micro4/3 users looking for micro4/3 lens they never had till now, they'll up the price even more.

Edit on my previous post: Cierco already has C mount adapters... so all you have to do is buy the Sanko lens and his adapters and I think you'd be good to go.

If you're sure that it's a rebadged Senko, you could always just buy that Senko and a $40 c-mount adapter and you'd be set to work with a GH1.

Kinda, sorta. But I would hope that, being a native m4/3 lens, the Noktor would AF and have electronic aperture control, while the Senko + c-mount adapter would not.

The big problem I see here is that there's no way the Noktor can be competitively priced relative to a "Canikon" 50mm f1.8 + adapter, which can be had for $200 or less. Yeah, the Noktor again has AF and aperture in its favor, but Pany already has a native m4/3 45mm f2.8 that no one buys because it's priced too high. Yes, the Noktor will be three stops faster than the Pany and two stops faster than the 50mm f1.8 + adapter combo, but I don't see how that's worth more than, say, $500.

My 2¢ - Mark

The Noktor definitely does not have AF and I'll bet it doesn't have auto-aperture either. Focusing that lens at f0.95 will not be easy.

Thanks for the info. But that sounds even stupider to me then. So the only difference between the Noktor and a 50mm f1.8 + adapter combo is that the Noktor is two stops faster? (And it's not like this is f8 vs f4; I mean, how often is f1.8 not fast enough?) And they expect to charge, like, $900 for it?

I don't see that selling--at all - Mark

Excuse me, folks, but the speculation in this thread could choke a horse! Unless I'm mistaken, we don't have any idea what the list price will be for this lens nor if it will allow focus and/or exposure to be controlled by the camera. I don't think we even know if the lens has any kind of stabilization. My gut is that the assumptions on price will be close ($800-$1100 price range) and that the lens will be full manual with no IS, but the simple truth is we do not know at this point. I have seen too many of these discussions lead to incorrect information becoming the accepted truth, so I thought it was time to inject my big nose into the conversation. Now removing nose!

Oh man, could I please have some moldy cheese to go with all the whine in the thread?

Personally I very much prefer fully manual lenses for film shooting. It's the only way to be sure that the camera electronics isn't second guessing what exposure I want and does something 'helpful' in the background during takes. As for auto focus I rather want that the money I spend on a lens goes to a good smooth mechanical manual focus ring than a motor, the electronics needed and focus-by-wire which frankly sucks for manual follow focusing.

As for c-mount adapter most I've seen are pretty thin plates looking not very solid, I rather have a native m4/3 mount than that when again using a follow focus.

The Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 is a pretty bad lens wide-open, even for video, tried it, saw all the chromatic aberrations and went for the f/1.4 instead. But to each his own, anybody who doesn't like the idea of a new relatively inexpensive 0.95 lens can just move on, nothing to see in here.

You might try asking Stanley Kubrick how often f/1.8 is not fast enough. Or even f/.95 for that matter. He went to great lengths for a lens almost a full stop faster than THAT.

I fail to see how f/8 to f/4 is any different than f/1.8 to f/.95...

No doubt we're talking about a specialty lens but the difference between f/1.8 and f/.95 is just as massive as f/8 to f/4 when you are in a situation that calls for a faster lens, not to mention the creative potential offered by the massively short DOF offered at that aperture.

I sincerely doubt we're going to get any kind of IS or AF or electronic aperture control with this lens, but a native m4/3 mount and a lens that fast will be a very nice thing to have and from the looks of the site they may have more focal lengths planned.

Keep in mind the GH1 is not the only market for this, and neither is video. The GF1 and Olympus EP-1 cameras with a lens like this would be unbelievably awesome for street photography and that's a much bigger market than just video on the GH1.

The lens is only MANUAL FOCUS, it's written somewhere, and I bet all my gear (I don't have any money) that aperture will be manual too.
By the way, a lot of times, 1.8 is not fast enought, sometimes even my 50 1.4 is not fast enought.
And I love the shallow DoF fast lenses give.
